Gustav Klimt and Franz both became members of the Künstlerhaus Vienna, which Klimt left soon after to get involved with the Secessionists. They both submitted paintings for the faculties of the University in Vienna in 1900. Only Matsch works were accepted as Klimt’s were criticized as being too ‘pornographic’. Matsch has always been the less controversial of the two. The marriage to Theresia Anna Kattus gained him many portrait commissions and he even became a painter to the court. As a painter and sculptor Matsch finally found himself in Jugendstil always remaining attached to Historicism. One of his most prominent works is the large Anker watch in the Old City of Vienna. Hans Michaelson (1872-1954) Born as the son of Jewish traders in Hettstedt, near Halle (Saale), in 1872, Hans Michaelson first studied under Ludwig Schmid-Reutte in Leipzig, followed by the Berlin Academy, primarily under Friedrich Kallmorgen. From 1912 until 1930, he regularly took part in the “Juryfreie Kunstschau Berlin” (J.K.B) exhibitions and, together with August Gaul and Benno Berneis, showcased works in the renowned art salon of Paul Cassirer in 1914. Influences of the street and vaudeville scenes of the Expressionists, the vibrant colors of the Fauves and Henri Matisse, the Neoimpressionism of Camille Pissarro, and especially Vincent Van Gogh, can be found in Michaelson’s work. However, his style was always quietly present. He painted what he saw with the sobering precision of the silent observer. In 1937, he was classified as a “degenerate artist” by the National Socialists and had to flee Germany due to his Jewish roots and find a new home in Ecuadorian exile. He died there in 1954. Many of his pictures made before his exile are deemed missing and his later work in Ecuador remains completely unknown. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Vincenzo Cabianca (1827-1902) Vincenzo Cabianca, an Italian painter, born in Verona, was a protagonist of the artists group Macchiaioli. This union of Italian artists turned against tradition and academicism around the middle of the 19th century and supported a freer view of art (such as the French Barbizon painters). Cabianca studied primarily at the academies in Verona and Venice, before he came to Florence, where he soon joined up with the Macchiaioli circle. Representative for the artist´s oeuvre are mainly his landscapes and genre paintings: Cabianca captured the essential of the scenes empathetically, painted directly in front of the landscape (painting en plein air) and experimented with colors and light.
