Description: GAINSBOROUGH THOMAS: (1727-1788) English Painter. An exceptionally rare D.S., Tho. Gainsborough, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 1st August 1758. The boldly penned and signed holograph document is a receipt stating, in full, 'Recd. of Daniel Wayth Esq. the sum of fifteen Guineas in full for a half length portrait of himself'. Signed by Gainsborough with a large signature at the conclusion. With some light overall age toning and two small holes, not affecting the text or signature, G Daniel Wayth (1723-1799) Gentleman Landowner of Great Glemham, Suffolk, who would have been acquainted with Gainsborough through his connections with the Kilderbee family of Ipswich. At the head of the family was Samuel Kilderbee (1725-1813) who had married Wayth's daughter, Mary. Kilderbee, a lawyer, and Gainsborough were life-long friends and the painter made Kilderbee 'overseer' of the execution of his will. The lawyer was present at Gainsborough's death. The first document signed by Gainsborough to have appeared at auction in twenty five years; American Book Prices Current record the sale of just eleven letters and documents signed by Gainsborough, the last being sold in 1988.

A good original blue fountain pen and ink sketch of a ballerina in a full length pose standing en pointe, drawn and signed by Knight on a small 8vo page removed from an autograph album. Boldly signed by Knight at the base and dated R[oyal] O[rdnance] F[actory], Newport, March 1943 in her hand. With integral leaf attached. VG In March 1943 Laura Knight visited the Royal Ordnance Factory in Newport, Monmouthshire, to paint a woman at work and made the present drawing for an employee. The result of the artist's visit was her picture entitled Ruby Loftus Screwing a Breech-ring which was voted the most popular painting in the RA Exhibition the following month.

A.L.S., Ronald, one page, 4to, London, 30th July 1952, to Nicolas Bentley ('Dear Nick') on the printed stationery of Perpetua Limited. Searle informs his correspondent that he didn't fully enjoy a book, commenting 'It's difficult when you dislike almost every character. Still - it was interesting - and well written.' He further informs Bentley that he has to go away until the end of August on a couple of features, 'but meanwhile you could be looking out a drawing which would make an American laugh for £10', explaining, 'The wife of a big New York advertising man (Mr. Henry Bach of Henry Bach Associates!) [Inc. Inc.] wants me to get for her one or two originals of cartoons to hang in their apartment over there. (no commission!) She fell in love with your trotting passenger in the Sedan chair - but we weren't parting with it. So anything like.' In concluding Searle asks 'Did I tell you we are doing the odd book under this firm? Our first on dramatic criticism, critics and such subjects will be out in October and we hope it will sweep the profession! If it doesn't we'll have to give it away with ice creams in the Interval. Any way we are thoroughly enjoying ourselves.' Small group of four A.Ls.S., John Bratby and John, five pages (total), 4to, Hastings, East Sussex & Blackheath, London, 7th March & 29th October 1982 and n.d., all to Don [Moore, of The Monastery Garden Restaurant] on Bratby's personal printed stationery (three different designs, two in colour). In the first dated letter Bratby announces 'I am very sorry. We had a very nice relationship. But if the prices on my work are cut off they must come back to my studio' and adds that he will send a van to collect them all; in the second dated letter Bratby states that there is something he would like to ask his correspondent, explaining 'Last Wednesday evening we had just arranged my second one-man show in London...of non-portrait work, there being a third in the Royal Festival Hall, and we were in a celebratory mood, went to The George and then came to pick up your kind offer of a meal, though as on the two previous occasions the free bottle of wine knocks me out. The diners across from us asked us not to include them in our conversation & the new head-waiter gentleman refused to wrap up Patti's uneaten chicken in no uncertain terms. Could you drop me a line by letter, telling me what you understood happened. The matter has continued to worry me for 1 1/2 weeks.'; and in the two undated letters Bratby refers to his pictures, enquiring if his correspondent would like some more ('It will be much better with nice fresh stuff: they were becoming part of the walls.') and also referring to arrangements to collect 'all the oils & drawings....it will not disturb the look of the restaurant.' A good collection of various signed greetings cards, exhibition brochures and other ephemera etc. by Frost, all to his friends Alf & Margaret Rogers, including eight signed greetings cards sent by Frost on different occasions (Birthdays, Christmas etc.), three with original pen and ink sketches by the artist (depicting a fishing boat at sea with a large sun in the sky etc.), and three apparently designed by Frost himself with brightly coloured cards in an abstract design, an A.L.S., Terry, to the verso of a colour postcard reproduction of his work entitled April Sun Up, 9th May 1987, thanking his correspondent's for their hospitality and continuing 'Our opening at the Henry Moore exhibition in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park was superb. A wonderful site in Denby Dale & the sculptures looked magnificent. The University opening for my show was very good & they provided a good buffet & wine. Lots of old friends, some looking v. old. Very sad really.', some signed Exhibition brochures and invitations etc. for Paintings and Collages at Rufford Craft Centre, 1982, Recent Paintings at the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1969, two signed and inscribed copies of Painting in the 1980's, a signed hardback edition of Warm Frost, also including a number of cards etc. signed by Frost's wife (some also on his behalf), a few unsigned books and photographs (including two vintage 1960s images of Frost at work outdoors in Cornwall), two mugs designed by Frost for the Royal Academy of Arts, with black and red and black and yellow geometric designs and Frost's facsimile signature to the verso. Together with a few unrelated signatures of Labour Politicians including R. Stafford Cripps, Hugh Dalton, Arthur Greenwood, Aneurin Bevan etc. together on a brochure (P) etc. Generally VG to EX, 42

A good vintage signed and inscribed Christmas greetings card, the folding 8vo card featuring a printed image of Jemima Puddle-Duck beneath the word Greetings to the front cover and with a further printed image of Jemima Puddle-Duck and Peter Rabbit by Potter to the inside. The image depicts them engaged in conversation by a garden gate and wall, with a kitten looking over the top, and bears a short passage of printed text beneath, 'Will you come to tea, Peter?' 'I should love to, Jemima, but will there be a cat?' 'No cats, no foxes! Just me and you' 'M'ew! I come too!' said Tom Kitten'. Signed ('Beatrix Potter') in dark fountain pen ink opposite the image to the inside and inscribed in Potter's hand to Mary F. Gill, adding the date, New Year 1935, and a few additional words in her hand, 'with good wishes to all at Milton'. A charming signed Greetings card. A few very light, minor areas of discoloration to the front and a slight, neat tear at the base of the central fold, otherwise about VG Mary F. Gill, a prominent Boston Unitarian, and Beatrix Potter, herself a life-long Unitarian, had been corresponding since the 1920s as a result of Gill's activities with Friendly Links, an organization promoting intellectual exchange between British and American Unitarians.

Masefield writes a series of largely social letters to his friend, sending her Birthday wishes, inviting her to tea and giving directions on how to find his home, and also discussing her work etc., in part, 'I hope that the new plays may have all happy success, & that you will have the thrill & the joy of directing them, & your audience, now & then, the thrill & joy of seeing you act in them.'; 'Please, let me wish you every happy success with a new type of pupil, in Hardy's country. I hope that lots of them will want to speak Thomas Hardy, & do scenes from the Dynasts.'; 'I am sorry to say that I cannot now expect to read much verse, for my eyes get worse daily.
