Description: 2 July 1889 AUCKLAND. THAMES. Shares of £1, paid-up 18 Shillings/Share. gold, black. No 107. Formed in Melbourne in the late 1880s, and apparently liquidated in 1891. The era from 1868 to 1871 were the bonanza years for the town with gold production topping one million pounds sterling at its peak. Official figures for production of the Thames Mines recorded a yield of 2,327,619oz bullion with the value at $845 million. The three richest fields were the Manukau / Golden Crown / Caledonian mines but many others yielded near equivalent amounts. This share is from a very late period, when local gold production was well past its peak. Cert. of 500 shares issued (of a total of 20,000 issued) to a citizen of Melbourne. Small format but with unusual gold print of company name and "18 shillings" being the first instalment paid per share. Rare piece.

A group of 5 consecutive receipts, each receipt good for 15 coupons to the bearer of a temporary certificate, signed by the Russo-Asiatic Bank. This was followed in Dec. 1922 by an announcement of the Chinese Government that coupons and drawn bonds of the Russian issue would be paid only after exchange of the original bonds or interim receipts for new (green) bonds. Reference: Wilhelm Kuhlmann's book called China's Foreign Debt. Type: KUL 305 SCRIP. The lot also comes with one coupon (payable July 1914) of a temporary certificate for 5 bonds, being the 5 bonds with the same number as on the receipts. As such this is a most unusual group of certificates.

The wall is a series of 8852 km stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16 century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire. We believe this is the only scripophily on which we remember seeing a (large) vignette of the Great Wall. On the company itself: founded 1938 with a (gigantic) capital of 350 million Yen to invest in various business ventures, e.g. road building, telecommunication, mining, electricity.
