GIROLAMO DA TREVISO, THE HOLY FAMILY WITH SAINT CATHERINE

Lot 1008: GIROLAMO DA TREVISO, THE HOLY FAMILY WITH SAINT CATHERINE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The origin of the painter Girolamo da Treviso remains uncertain, although Giorgio Vasari makes mention of him in his "Vite". It is possible that he descended from the artist family Pennacchi from Treviso since he is occasionally called Girolamo Pennacchi. His works are closely related to the Venetian tradition of "Giorgionismo", but have their own style entirely, particularly recognisable by the figural depictions. A painting comparable to ours is in the Lakeview Museum (Arizona, USA). Here we see a similar St. Catherine in profile. The view to the landscape at right is related. After his stays in Bologna and at the court of Mantua, Girolamo's life experienced an unexpected turn in 1538. That year he entered the services of King Henry VIII of England as a military engineer. In 1544, he participated in the first attack on Boulogne-sur-Mer where he was killed. We thank Bernard Aikema for the confirmation that this painting is a work by Girolamo da Treviso. Paolo Ervas will include this painting in his monograph on Girolamo da Treviso to be published shortly. Ervas dates to the work to after the frescoes in the Church of the Commenda, Faenza, of 1533.

MASTER OF THE PRODIGAL SON, MADONNA AND CHILD WITH SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Lot 1009: MASTER OF THE PRODIGAL SON, MADONNA AND CHILD WITH SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The master owes its provisional name to The Story of the Prodigal Son, his most important painting in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. 773). The present Virgin and Child with saint John the Baptist is a new evidence of a highly praised composition in Antwerp in the mid sixteenth century by the master. The picture appears to be close - even if not exactly the same - to the one in the Museo Lazaro Galdiano, Madrid (inv. 3020, panel 86 x 69 cm). In both the figures are seated against a large drapery falling in heavy folds suggesting that they are placed under a canopy. Similarly the Virgin is looking to the viewer while John the Baptist is presented in an elegant full profile. But unlike the spanish panel where the Infant Christ's gaze is clearly turned to the left indicating the former presence of a donor on the lost wing, here he looks directly at the Baptist showing that this composition was designed to be offered independently for sale on the art market. The mannerist influence is noticeable in the sharp violet color of saint John's tunic and the Flemish renaissance is obviously discernable in the plastic and shaped bodies who recall the figure types of Pieter Coeck van Aelst. The still life on the table in the foreground of the lower right corner commemorates the idiom of Joos van Cleve, another famous Antwerp painter active in the first half of the 16th century.

JAN SWART VAN GRONINGEN, ADORATION OF THE MAGI

Lot 1010: JAN SWART VAN GRONINGEN, ADORATION OF THE MAGI

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jan Swart van Groningen devoted himself to creating woodcuts and achieved great success in this medium. His Bible illustrations are some of the best, both in design and execution, created in the Netherlands at the time. He did however paint very few pictures. Our work would have been painted in the 30s when the influence of Dutch Romanists was great. The importance of the landscape in his work decreased and the figures gained prominence in the foreground. Both of these aspects are evident in this painting.

Lot 1018: DOMENICO THEOTOCOPULI, gen. EL GRECO, PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: In art historical publications since August Mayer this painting is frequently considered to be a work by El Greco. It is an unfinished painting in which the face is finely executed and the body only sketched (cf. Gudiol op. cit. p. 251). In addition to this, the poor condition also limits the impact. The composition, typology and physiognomy all fit the oeuvre of El Greco.

ADRIAEN THOMASZ KEY, ADORATION OF THE MAGI

Lot 1019: ADRIAEN THOMASZ KEY, ADORATION OF THE MAGI

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The painting is a rediscovery since it's sale in Berlin in 1929. It was then known as a replica of Willem Key's Adoration of the Magi (panel, 72 x 108 cm, present whereabouts unknown) and published as such in 1936 by M.J. Friedländer (Die altniederländische Malerei, vol. 13, no. 271). Today it is recognized as a masterly reinterpretation of the subject by Adriaen Thomasz Key, pupil and collaborator of Willem. The composition strikes the viewer by its close-up rendering. The Virgin and Child slightly off centre are surrounded by five powerfully modeled figures, the oldest magus wearing a rich gold dress kneeling in the foreground. Surprisingly the black magus present in the upper right corner of Willem Key's model has been replaced by a far landscape. Adriaen Thomasz has indeed introduced in his version some remarkable compositional changes. The exclusion of the black king is based rigorously on the text of the Gospels which do not mention him. Doing this the painter follows the recommendations of the theologian Johannes Molanus from 1570. Furthermore he introduces in the upper left corner the head of a young man with individualised facial features allowing Dr. Jonckheere to recognize in it a possible self-portrait, portraiture being the most talented genre of the painter. The emphazis placed on the treatment of the physiognomies is consistent with the usual style and technique of Adriaen Key as revealed by comparaison with e.g. his signed Holy Family in Philadelphia (inv. 430). As a result this Adoration of the Magi appears to be a fine example of religious art made in Antwerp after the Iconoclasm. We thank Hélène Mund for this catalogue entry.

PARIS BORDONE, attributed to, MADONNA WITH CHILD AND DONORS

Lot 1020: PARIS BORDONE, attributed to, MADONNA WITH CHILD AND DONORS

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: After a humanistic education Paris Bordone started an apprenticeship at the studio of Titian, which he later left after a dispute. Bordone received very few official commissions in Venice, perhaps due to the influence of Titian, and early on in his career worked mainly for private clients from Venice or his hometown of Treviso. The first and only large-scale public commission came in 1534 for the Albergo frescoes of the Scuola Grande di San Marco. Despite the strained relationship with Titian, this work was hugely instrumental in Bordone's artistic development. Strong artistic influences also came from Giorgione and Pordenone. From the 40s Bordone turned increasingly to Mannerism; the colour palette was cooler, the movement of figures became more elegant and a preference for allegorical subjects became apparent. Related to the present composition of "Madonna and Child with two donor figures" is another, slightly smaller version in the royal collection at Hampton Court, dating to circa 1537 (see Giordana Mariani Canova: Paris Bordon, Venice 1964, p. 103, ill. 55). Since the 17th century this painting has been attributed to Titian, Veronese, Giorgione and finally Paris Bordone in 1860. The present work somewhat differs from the picture at Hampton Court in the painting of the Christ Child who is here depicted asleep. In the Hampton Court version the infant christ also turns towards the male donor with one arm outstretched. The donor figure is believed to be the same client reproduced in "Portrait of an unknown man" (Formerly Glaenzer collection, see Paris Bordon e il suo tempo. Atti del convegno internazionale di studi, Treviso 1987, p. 192 onwards). The painting was examined in 1928 in Berlin by Hermann Voss and William Bode and was considered a genuine work by Bordone. Giordana Mariani Canova was most likely unaware of the painting due to it being in a private German collection for approximately 80 years and thus did not include it in her catalogue raisonné. Bernhard Aikema considers the work at Hampton Court to be a stronger version and that the present painting was perhaps created with workshop participation.

ANTON MOZART, THE TOWER OF BABEL

Lot 1021: ANTON MOZART, THE TOWER OF BABEL

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: In comparison to his Augsburg contemporaries, such as Hans Rottenhammer, Johann König or Mathias Kager, the work of Anton Mozart is still somewhat unknown. He was praised by Philipp Hainhofer however as being an "outstanding landscape painter" (Rudelius-Kamholz). Hainhofer himself was not only a famous cabinet maker but also a successful art agent, mediating works by Mozart to clients such as the Duke of Pomerania-Stettin and Maximilian I of Bavaria amongst others. Our painting has only recently been identified as a work by Mozart. Marion Rudelius-Kamholz expressed in her dissertation that it could indeed be an image from an Augsburg painter and rejected the former attribution to Marten Valckenborch (op. cit. H. Minkowski), as did Alexander Wied. In the painting she recognised the prototype for Mozart's designs but did not venture to confirm such an attribution after having only seen illustrations of the work (op. cit. p. 129). In the 1600s the theme of the Tower of Babel, a symbol of hybris and divine punishment, was widely popular and can be seen in Mozart's oeuvre on four occasions. Apart from one painting on wood with similar dimensions (now in unknown private possession, cat. no. 1 A20), the paintings are all smaller than our work. All of the variations depict two conspicious ramps leading up to the higher floor of the tower. The fore and middlegrounds of the compositions feature kilns, mills, building sheds, carts and mules along with a plenty of workmen handling wood and stone. On a hill to the right of this picture King Nimrod sits on a horse, accompanied by servants holding a sunshade over him. Before him an architect shows him the plans for the tower. Out of all of Mozart's variations on the theme, a tempera on parchment work in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett (27 x 32 cm, signed, dated 1606, KDZ 17 904) is most similar to ours. The main difference lies in the range of hills in the background of the Berlin composition where, in our painting, the landscape opens to the sea. It is this area that reasons for Mozart's reputation as an outstanding landscape painter. Painted extremely delicately and with a bright colour palette Mozart picks out the distant ships and the shore. A small island to the top of the work is reminiscent of Venice, where a stay at some point is suspected although not yet confirmed. His fellow painters Rottenhammer and König were however active in the lagoon. Also evident in the painting is the Dutch influence and particularly that of Pieter and Jan Brueghel the Younger and Lucas Valckenborch. It is clear however that Mozart combined these influences with his own developing signature style. The attribution of this painting will hopefully bring to light works by Mozart formerly attributed to another hand. His monogram is usually cleverly hidden in the composition; here, it is the large A inserted with the smaller M in the rooftop arch of the building shed.

BRUEGHEL THE ELDER, LANDSCAPE WITH CATTLE HERD AND RIDER

Lot 1022: BRUEGHEL THE ELDER, LANDSCAPE WITH CATTLE HERD AND RIDER

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This small copper plate by Jan Brueghel the Elder reflects the radical change in landscape painting around 1600. Formerly based on high viewpoints and clearly defined backgrounds, the depiction of the flat landscapes of the Netherlands gradually developed, as reflected here, to encompass a low-level eye line and horizon. The tri-colour division of brown, green and blue for the fore, middle, and backgrounds changed in favour of one shade prevailing over the entire work. As a result of this, Klaus Ertz dates the work to the early 1600's. Comparable examples of Jan Brueghel the Elder's works are the "Bewaldete Landschaft" in the Hannover Landesgalerie (Ertz op. cit. Cat. No. 14), signed and dated 1603, and the "Weg zum Mark" in the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein, signed and dated 1604 (K. Ertz op. cit. Cat. No. 28). The stylistic similarities of these works would, according to Ertz, suggest a date of between 1600 and 1604. Somewhat remarkable in this perfectly preserved miniature painting is the layered, transparent glaze and the extremely fine and accurate brushstrokes which encompass even the smallest details.

LOUIS DE CAULLERY, HOMAGE TO VENUS - ALLEGORY OF SPRING HOMAGE TO CERES - ALLEGORY OF SUMMER

Lot 1023: LOUIS DE CAULLERY, HOMAGE TO VENUS - ALLEGORY OF SPRING HOMAGE TO CERES - ALLEGORY OF SUMMER

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Probably born in the village of Caullery near Cambrai, the painter was trained in Antwerp under Joos de Momper around 1594. Only five paintings bear his signature, most of his production being attributed to him based on stylistic analysis. He painted cityscapes of Rome and Venice which has often led to believe that he travelled in Italy. But his most favorite themes are galant scenes with elegant company appearing in Banquet scenes, balls, carnivals, subjects frequently entrusted with an allegorical meaning. He must have had a large audience as evidenced by the number of his paintings in the 17th century Antwerp collections. The themes of the Homage to Venus and the Homage to Ceres are well know in his oeuvre. He repeated them many times (see e.g. Sotheby New York, 6.6.2012 lot 16 and Artcurial, Paris, 19.6.2012, lot 12). The two compositions were created to form pendants, each goddess being placed in the centre on a high pedestal above the crowd of admirers and before an elegant park lined with caryatids along green niches. The tall figures, elegant costumes and sophisticade postures are characteristic of Caullery's style.

Lot 1027: SCHOOL OF LORRAINEarly 17th century (?), BELSHAZZAR'S FEAST

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The theme of Belshazzar's Feast (Daniel, 5, 1-25) was rarely painted in the Middle Ages but became popular during the Counter-Reformation. It was often painted in the late 16th and early 17th centuries in Flanders, for example by the artists of the Francken family. In Lorraine the theme was interpreted in fantastic nocturnes with emphasised effects of light. Examples can be seen in the paintings of Monsù Desiderio (Hartford, Wadsworth Atheneum) and works from the circle of Claude Deruet (Douai, Musée de la Chartreuse). This painting can be considered a work from this group. It depicts a hall with long tables and decorated with tapestries. On the left side sits Beshazzar and his queen. On the opposite side is the mysterious hand which judges Belshazzar: "Weighed and found wanting."

Description: Born in Brussels, Willem van den Bundel belonged to the group of painters who, in c. 1600, moved to the north of Holland. Here he was active in Amsterdam, Dordrecht, Rotterdam and finally Delft. His landscapes, due to the uniform and monochrome colour palette and fine, almost archaic brushwork, have an immediate impact. His oeuvre comprises of only a few signed works, including a 1623 "Wooded Landscape" in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum (Walther Bernt: Die niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER, ALLEGORY OF EARTH

Lot 1031: BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER, ALLEGORY OF EARTH

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The composition is derived from a painting of larger size wich is part of a set of four paintings made by Jan Brueghel the Elder with the collaboration of Hendrik van Balen, which belongs today to the Galleria Doria Pamphilij in Rome (inv. 322, 328, 332, 348. See K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, 1979, p. 368-376) datable around 1611. The Four Elements series has undoubtedly known a huge popularity in Flanders since the second decade of the 17th Century, their compositional schemes being continuously used by four generations of Antwerp painters linked to the Brueghel family. Within this sequence the "Allegory of the Earth" on copper occupies a chronologically position relativaly close to the original design. Jan Brueghel the Younger assisted by Hendrick van Balen or a collaborator repeated it at least twice (see K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Jüngere, 1984, p. 357-365), one version being owned by the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Lyons (inv. A74, panel, 46 x 83 cm), probably produced about 1620, the second datable a decade later belonging to the Paul Getty Museum (A71-P29, panel, 52.5 x 81.5 cm). Other versions were also made in his workshop, the production expanding thereafter also to nephews from the Van Kessel family as shown by Ferdinand van Kessel on a canvas in the present sale (lot 1084). The Allegory of Earth is personified by Ceres seating at the centre of the composition. She is surrounded by four figures including a satyre and two putti handing her wheat and garlands of foliage and fruits. Surrounding the group there are numerous symbolic references to nature in the form of animals, a couple of apes and guinea-pigs, various vegetables and fruits such as artichokes, cucumber, carrots, water melon and flowers. Ertz dates the painting to the end of the thirties similarly as the Getty version, the collaborator of Jan for the figures being here an unknown master from the circle of Van Balen. - We thank Dr. Hélène Mund, Brussels, for this catalogue entry.

The pancake maker appears in Dutch theatre plays of the 17th century as a comic figure, Adriaen Brouwer introduces him in genre paintings, in a male as well as in a female version, as a bawdy peasant or as an old woman. The pancake was a simple, cheap meal and thus popular among peasants, and it was accordingly associated with the rustic low classes. Rembrandt was supposed to have owned a pannekoekenbakster by Adriaen Brouwer, his interpretation of the theme can be seen in his famous etching from 1635. Margret Klinge dates this painting to the early 1630s and thus in the first Antwerp years of Teniers when he was still under the influence of Adriaen Brouwer. One can assume that Teniers also knew Brouwer´s depictions of pancake makers and his influence can be seen in the figure types and the monochrome palette of this painting. As Klinge has pointed out (Antwerp 1991, no. 2), Teniers´s depiction is different to those of the other painters as the pancake maker is represented as a young woman with a neat hair style and wearing a nice blue jacket. Turning to the young man behind her, she seems to be distracted from her work, whereby she holds the pan firmly in her hand. For Klinge the depiction has a moral message and associates an old German proverb with it: "Halt die Pfanne bei dem Stil, halt den Pflug bei dem Sterz", which can be translated as "Hold firm the pan at its handle, the plough at its tail," a call for moral firmness. This painting was acknowledged as an original work by David Teniers the Younger by Margret Klinge.

TENIERS THE YOUNGER, OLD WOMAN AT THE SPINNING WHEEL

Lot 1035: TENIERS THE YOUNGER, OLD WOMAN AT THE SPINNING WHEEL

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The old woman at the spinning wheel was a popular subject of Dutch genre paintings in the 16th and 17th centuries and was painted, among others, by Gerard Dou, Nicolaes Maes, Gerard Terborch and Quirijn van Brekenkam. The woman working at the spinning wheel represented a contrast to the immoral, lazy, and careless figures that populated Dutch genre paintings - she was hardworking and diligent and embodied female virtues that were interpreted according to Christian moral. Johan de Brune for example shows in his emblem book a spinning woman who is praised for her work that is aimed towards heavenly peace and fulfillment and not towards earthly gains. The Christian moral interpretation of spinning derives from the Bible where it is written: "She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff" (Solomon 31,19). This painting was acknowledged as an original work by David Teniers the Younger by Margret Klinge.

FRANCKEN THE YOUNGER, studio of, THE TRIUMPH OF NEPTUNE AND AMPHITRITE

Lot 1036: FRANCKEN THE YOUNGER, studio of, THE TRIUMPH OF NEPTUNE AND AMPHITRITE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This work is painted by an artist belonging to the workshop of the Antwerp painter Frans Francken. His large workshop worked to satisfy the great demand for the popular characteristic cabinet pictures with small figural staffage; he finished many of the paintings himself. His characteristic glazing technique and style can be seen in the shells, fishes, the dolphin and the sea-horses. In a small cave on the coast gods have gathered for the wedding of Neptune, got of the sea, and Amphitrite, one of the 50 daughters of Nereus. Depictions of the wedding procession were among the most popular themes from the workshop of Francken. A red cloth around the two gods focuses the attention of the viewer to the centre of the composition, working through the large group of monochrome figures, and also referring to the erotic aspect of the scene. Neptune and Amphitrite were often equated with Antwerp's city patrons, the river god Schelde and the personification of Antwerpia. The iconography became very popular in the catholic city. Francken's experienced virtuosity and the characteristic tonal painting indicate a date of circa 1635 (cf. the certificate of Dr. U. Härting).

Description: Along with the boat and ferry, the horse and cart is one of the most popular motifs used by van Goyen. In this painting it is the central motif and, along with the surrounding figures, takes the immediate attention of the viewer. The painting derives from the middle of the 1630s. In terms of style it belongs to a transitional period towards the late monochrome paintings of van Goyen. A yellow-gold palette acts as a contrast to the grey and white of the sky and dominates the painting.

JAN VAN GOYEN, MIGHTY CASTLE ON A ROCK

Lot 1039: JAN VAN GOYEN, MIGHTY CASTLE ON A ROCK

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The depictions of river landscapes with prominent buildings including castles, ruins and forts, are, in van Goyen's oeuvre, less extensive than his other motifs. In most cases, these pictures were created between 1645 and 1655 and thus belong to his later works. Our atmospheric painting depicts a castle-like and probably uninhabited building on a steep slope of a river bank beneath a cloudy sky which occupies more than half of the picture. Van Goyen's primary concern here is the clouds and their reflection in the water, along with the contrasts of brightly lit and shaded areas in the sky, on land and in water. Everything is brought together through the use of a uniform colour scheme.

Description: The picture is not listed by Beck. An attribution to Jan van Goyen is however possible when comparing it to the signed painting, dated 1632 and entitled "A pole, three men and a dog" (Beck, op. cit. no. 1002). In addition to the same dimensions, the paintings share alternating, horizontal light and dark areas in the foreground, and the group of men with a dog on the dunes. The motif of the two young men lying in the sand appears in other similar works by van Goyen, for example in Beck no. 993, dated 1629.

Description: The musical entertainment takes place under a rose arcade. In the background a palace can be seen. Attributed by Britta Nehlsen to Dirck Hals himself - normally the larger architectural structures in works by Dirck Hals were painted in collaboration with Dirck van Delen. The iconography of this Merry Company belongs to the tradition of the love gardens of the 16th century whereas, according to Nehlsen, the arcades covered with flowers refer to scenes from the legend of Prodigius.
