Description: CHARLES II SILVER METAL MOUNTED, EBONY VENEERED ARCHITECTURAL LONGCASE CLOCK BY JOHANNES FROMANTEEL, LONDON CIRCA 1670 the 9 inch square gilt brass dial mounted with a silvered chapter ring and with foliate engraved spandrels, signed 'Johannes Fromanteel, Londini', the month going movement with four latched and ringed pillars joining rectangular plates, bolt-and-shutter maintaining power, anchor escapement and Roman striking on two bells, the arched case with applied brass mounts the trunk with fine applied mouldings, raised on bun feet 36cm wide, 193cm high

Condition Report: **UPDATED REPORT** After additional assessment, we have not been able to confirm the clock is of month duration. It is hard to know for sure without counting all the teeth on the wheels and pinions which couldn't be done. Considering the striking and the way it is set up now it wouldn't last more than eight or nine days without needing to be wound. This is rather confusing considering this type of striking is designed specifically for month going clocks. With Roman striking the count wheel and the pin wheel are normally mounted on a wheel after the barrel which allows for a longer duration. Confusingly this one is positioned in the same manner as a normal eight day striking longcase clock. Another observation about the duration is that month going clocks are normally wound anticlockwise, on account of the extra wheel in the train, unlike this one. None of this is conclusive but it does make us suspect, against all the initial evidence, that this is an eight day clock. - the case is in good restored condition with some replaced parts, most notable to the plinth, feet and the hood. The silvered mounts on the pediment are replacements as is one of the column capitals. There is a plugged key hole to the front of the hood. There are typical minor cracks to the case panels. - a detailed condition report on the works is available and will be sent separately upon request - mounts are brass not silver Condition Disclaimer Under the Conditions of Sale applicable to the sale of the lot, buyers must satisfy themselves as to each and every aspect of the quality of the lot, including (without limitation) its authorship, attribution, condition, provenance, authenticity, age, suitability and origin.
