He was born in Krefeld. He was a key member of the Der Blaue Reiter group, from 1911 to 1912. When the Nazi regime came to power in 1933, he was among the many modernists condemned as degenerate artists, and prohibited from exhibiting. He moved to the Netherlands, where he spent the rest of his life working at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Painter, printmaker, stained-glass designer. First gained prominence within the Blaue Reiter circle, which he entered in 1911; showed three of his paintings in their first exhibition that year. Became known for his lyrical, sometimes fairy tale-like works envisioning a mystical harmony among animals, the untamed landscape, and man. Took inspiration in particular from Franz Marc's animal subject matter and prismatic forms and colors, as well as from Bavarian folk art. Drafted in 1915; discharged due to poor health, he isolated himself in rural Seeshaupt in Bavaria. He made a total of seventy-seven prints, all black-and-white woodcuts, approximately one-third of them from 1916 to 1917, when woodcut was a major preoccupation for him. Many published in Der Sturm, Das Holzschnittbuch, and Die Schaffenden, the latter two by Paul Westheim. Literature: Engels, Mathias. 1959. Campendonk. Holzschnitte. Werkverzeichnis. Stuttgart, Kohlhammer, Reference: Engels 36 a (of b) Condition: Very Good Condition. The print is attached to a mount with tape.

It is inscribed in pencil "E.A" (Epreuve d' Artiste = Artist Proof) in the lower left corner. Additionally, it is inscribed "Pour M Madame Bergman". This is an artist proof, probably the first state of the print. This work was probably a gift from the artist for Mrs Bergman, who was a major art collector. This is the first artist proof printed aside the regular edition that was additionaly hand coloured in watercolour by the artist. Provenance: The Bergman Collection, The Israel Museum Jerusalem. Charlotte Bergman, who died in Jerusalem on July 17 2003, one month before her 99th birthday, was unique among the museum's benefactors. She lived on the premises of the Israel Museum for three decades, and died there. When she made aliyah from New York to Israel in the 60's, the Belgian-born Bergman brought her collection of modern art with her and helped Jerusalem ex-mayor Teddy Kollek found the museum. As the childless widow of an English architect, she promised to bequeath her paintings, sculptures and ceramics by such 20th century masters as Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso to the museum. In return, she asked to build a home within the campus, sharing its security. She wouldn't have to put her treasures in a vault. She could live with them and savor them with her friends. After her death the museum plans to keep the white, single-story house and its 200 art works intact. Although he would not put a figure on it, they are believed to be worth many millions of dollars. They include a portrait in oils of a young Charlotte Bergman by Dufy, a personal friend, and a set of small-format Henry Moore bronzes, among other works of Picasso, Braque and other great 20th century masters. Condition: Very good condition.
