Sale Notes:
Any time one opens a Rock Island Auction Company Premiere Auction Catalog, they're assured to see the best of the best. The September Premiere Firearms Auction will provide no exception, but will additionally host a myriad of scarcely seen variations and prototypes that collectors are certain to snatch up in an effort to fill the persistent holes in their own collections. With the abundance of beauty and rarity present in the upcoming auction, it's certain to leave many collectors and investors elated with their new found additions. The amount of Colts in this auction dwarfs any other manufacturer at over 550 items. Thanks in part to the Donald Kotecki Collection, the selection is bursting with examples sporting high condition, cases, factory master engravings, attractive finishes, historical significance, gold inlays, special grips, diamond inlays, and several experimental variations. First and foremost to Colt collectors is likely to be the historic Colt Model 1847 C Company Walker revolver, No. 147. Though not far behind will be the rare, documented, factory engraved ("C") and gold inlaid Colt Government Model semi-automatic pistol. The ornate Colts in this auction know no bounds as is seen in the factory engraved, carved pearl grip, diamond inlaid Single Action Army and even a supremely impressive gold Damascene Colt 1851 Navy revolver that must be seen to be believed. Historic Colts include two presentation pistols given by cowboy film star Harry Carey to two distinguished statesmen, as well as an extraordinary "Rough Rider" Colt Artillery Model Single Action Army revolver with its holster and factory letter. Not to mention the exceptional quality, early production Colt 1921 fully automatic Thompson submachine gun complete with its original FBI case, plus its drum & stick magazines, eight experimental Colt revolvers, a near new, factory engraved Colt Woodsman, and a near mint, Colt Burgess lever action rifle - the finest we have ever had the pleasure to offer. To say that RIAC has Colts covered is an understatement.

Scarce Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

Lot 3: Scarce Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Scarce Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol This is an example of a Factory Engraved Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company. The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass receiver and finger-hole loading lever. The pistol has a small brass pinch-top front sight on the barrel and dove-tail mounted rear sight on the receiver. The hammer and lever are case hardened and the receiver has a natural brass finish. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish "piano" finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" in two lines. The lack of Volcanic markings and the addition of "Patent" before the February 14, 1854 date indicate that the pistol was manufactured after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company into the New Haven Arms Company in April 1857. The serial number "1761" is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grips. The top and sides of of the receiver and the backstrap are engraved with the large, open, scroll work utilized by the New Haven Arms Co., on factory engraved guns. The New Haven Arms Co., produced an estimated total of 3300 lever action pistols and carbines between 1857 and 1860. This total includes an estimated 850 No. 1 Pocket Pistols. Volcanic pistols and carbines are scarce and historically significant firearms. The Volcanic lever action, integral magazine and self-contained "rocket ball" cartridges represented a significant advance in firearms design. The basic Volcanic designs evolved into the Henry lever action rifle and the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles and carbines. Oliver F. Winchester's investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and subsequent controlling interest in the New Haven Arms Company eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co. Model: Volcanic BBL: 3 1/2 Inch Stock: Gauge: 31 Volcanic Finish: blue/case-hardened Grips: varnished walnut Serial Number: 1761 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The fine brass receiver has an attractive, untouched, patina. The open scroll engraving is crisp. The side-plate joints are tight and the receiver has minimal handling marks. The barrel markings are clear. The barrel, hammer and lever are covered with light pitting. The barrel has been cleaned and shows some age discoloration. The hammer, lever and trigger have a dark brown patina. The grips are in very good condition and retain about half of the piano finish. There is a repaired crack in the right grip and several hair-line cracks in the heel of the right grip. This is a solid example of a scarce, factory engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol.

Scarce Two Digit New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

Lot 4: Scarce Two Digit New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Scarce Two Digit New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol Early example of a No. 1 Volcanic Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., in 1857. This diminutive lever-action pistol has a 3 1/2 inch octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, distinctive brass receiver and finger ring loading lever. The barrel has a pinch-top front sight. A fixed rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the receiver. The legend "NEW HAVEN CONN/ PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" is roll-stamped in two lines on the top barrel flat. The serial number, "43" is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grips and on the right side of the loading lever. The barrel has a blue finish, the hammer and finger-ring lever are color casehardened and the two-piece walnut grips have a high polish varnish finish. The omission of the "VOLCANIC" markings on the barrel indicates that the pistol was manufactured after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and reorganized the company as the New Haven Arms Co., in April 1857. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured approximately 850 No. 1 Pocket Pistols between 1857 and 1862. The self-contained cartridge, spring loaded magazine and toggle lever action of the Volcanic pistols and carbines were key elements in the evolution of the Henry rifle design and subsequent development of the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles. Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co. Model: Volcanic BBL: 3 1/2 Inch Stock: Gauge: 31 Volcanic Finish: blue/case-hardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 43 Class: Antique Condition: Good as partially refinished (barrel assembly). There are traces of pitting on the top of the barrel; most of the dull period refinished blue finish is present on the sides and bottom of the barrel. Most of the dove-gray casehardened finish is present on the hammer. The lever has a silver-gray patina with traces of pitting. The brass receiver is in very good condition and has an attractive, un-polished patina. The side-plate joints are tight and wear is limited to a few minor scratches and handling marks. The grips are in very good condition and retain half or more of the piano finish.

Rare Civil War Production New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot 5: Rare Civil War Production New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Rare Civil War Production New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle Henry Lever Action Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in March 1864. The rifle has the distinctive Henry "gun metal" brass receiver and buttplate and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel has the late style, square back, nickel-silver front sight blade and a dovetail mounted, folding leaf rear sight. The sight leaf has a rounded top with 900 yard center notch. The second style receiver lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry receivers to about serial number 3000. The bottom of the receiver has the late, beveled magazine follower cut and the magazine has the large diameter brass follower. The buttplate is the first style with rounded heel which was replaced with a buttplate with sharp pointed heel in the mid-4000 serial number range. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor. The left side of the stock and barrel have a factory sling swivel and screw mounted loop for a sling hook. The swivel and hook were originally special order features but were standard by early 1864. The barrel/magazine has traces of the blue finish, the hammer and lever are color casehardened and the straight grain American walnut stock has a varnished or oiled finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN, CT." in two lines. The second style legend, introduced in the late 3000 serial number range is larger and has all Roman (serifed) characters rather than the smaller, first style legend with the combination of Roman and Gothic letters. The serial number "4585" is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, (4) on the inside of the buttplate and (5) on the shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. The tang screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. Experts believe that most Henry rifles made before 1865 were privately purchased by individual federal soldiers who wanted the unprecedented firepower offered by the 15-shot Henry repeating rifle. The Henry rifle was especially popular with soldiers in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky regiments. Many of these soldiers purchased Henry rifles from dealers in Louisville, Kentucky and other mid-west cities in 1864 using re-enlistment bounties. Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co. Model: Henry Rifle BBL: 24 Inch Stock: varnished walnut Gauge: 44 Henry Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 4585 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The barrel has a deep brown patina with sharp edges, and clear markings. The rear sight is original but is missing the elevator bar. The receiver and buttplate are in good overall condition with an attractive patina. The receiver and buttplate have typical scratches and handling marks. Most of the wear is concentrated on the bottom of the receiver and lower tang. The side plate joints are tight with a few minor dents along the top of the left sideplate. The hammer, trigger and lever have a dark brown patina with slight surface texture and pitting. The stock is in good overall condition with scattered, minor handling marks. The bolt has been gunsmith modified to centerfire configuration. This is a solid example of a Civil War production Henry rifle that may have seen Civil War service.

Fine New Haven Arms Henry Lever-Action Rifle

Lot 29: Fine New Haven Arms Henry Lever-Action Rifle

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Fine New Haven Arms Henry Lever-Action Rifle This Henry Lever Action Rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., circa November 1865. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate with octagon barrel and integral, 15-shot, magazine. The barrel has a brass, square back, front sight blade and folding, adjustable leaf, rear sight. The rear sight is the fourth pattern with 900 yard center notch and elevator bar stop screw near the top of the sight. The magazine has the second style, large diameter, brass follower and the bottom of the receiver has the beveled, follower cut-out. The receiver lacks the alternate rear sight dove-tail found on early production Henry rifles. The straight grain, American walnut, stock is fitted with a factory sling swivel on the left side. The left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The second style buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The buttplate has a hinged trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the second style, two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT.OCT.16.1860/ MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO.NEWHAVEN. CT.". This legend is slightly larger than the marking found on early-mid production Henry rifles and features all serifed letters. The rifle serial number, "6794" is located: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style, cap-head, buttplate and receiver screws are correctly not serial numbered. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the "W" inspection mark attributed to Oliver Winchester. The Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle available during the Civil War. Although the Ordnance Department purchased only 1,731 Henry rifles during the Civil War, experts believe that the majority of the 9000+ Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company between April 1862 and May 1865 were purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the firepower of a 15-shot repeating rifle. By 1864, many Federal soldiers in Western regiments were were armed with privately purchased Henry rifles. Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co. Model: Henry Rifle BBL: 24 Inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 44 Henry RF Finish: blue/case-hardened Grips: Serial Number: 6794 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The rifle is nearly all original with moderate handling wear. The barrel and magazine have a silver-gray patina with scattered patches of age discoloration and a few spots of light pitting. The front sight blade is a period replacement. The rear sight is complete and original. The New Haven Arms legend and the serial number are crisp. The receiver is in very fine condition with minimal handling wear. The side-plate joints are tight with a few very minor disassembly marks along the upper edges of both side-plates. The case colors on the hammer, lever and trigger have a silver-brown patina. The bottom of the hammer has light surface texturing. The brass buttplate is also in very fine condition. The brass receiver and buttplate have a very attractive, aged, patina. The stock is in fine condition with the "Henry Bump" present on the side; wear is limited to several shallow dents and handling marks, primarily on the underside between the lower tang and buttplate. This is a well above average, original, Civil War production Henry rifle that would compliment any collection!
