"Bradley's technique is different from French and English [poster designers]. C. de Soissons, The Poster, October 1898). Kiehl 18, DFP-I 154, Koch p. 67, Reims 1138, Virginia p. 24.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WILLIAM H. BRADLEY (1868-1962) THE MODERN POSTER. 1895. 19 1/2x12 inches, 49 1/2x32 cm. Condition B+: tape stain in lower left margin. Framed. The first American book dedicated to the poster craze was published by Charles Scribner in 1895 and contained articles on the development of the poster in different countries, including England, France, Italy and America. The book was limited to 1000 copies for which Bradley designed the paper cover label and the frontispiece. As an added incentive to poster lovers, each of the copies came with this Bradley poster. This copy is numbered 352 and (like all in the run) is initialed by Charles Scribner. Antiquarian book dealers who handle the book note that when it is sold it is "as usual" without the poster. Not in Kiehl, DFP-I 158, Margolin p. 46, Koch p. 63, Reims 1145, Virginia p. 10, Keay p. 27.

Description: WILLIAM H. BRADLEY (1868-1962) THE CHAP - BOOK. 1895. 20x14 inches, 50 3/4x35 1/2 cm. Condition A-: time-staining in image and margins. Framed. The influence of Aubrey Beardsley in the "swirling lines [and] attention to ornamental detail" (Margolin p. 15) are apparent in this, Bradley's only black and white poster for the Chap Book. The black and white is also reminiscent of book designs by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris (see the Kelmscott Chaucer), upon whose medieval-inspired work Bradley rested much of his style. Kiehl 16, DFP-I 155, Maitres pl. 136, Koch p. 66, Reims 1135, Virginia p. 54, Margolin p. 106.

Description: EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) POSTER CALENDAR 1897. Deluxe edition. 9 pages. 1896. 14x10 inches, 35 1/2x25 1/2 cm. R.H. Russell & Son, New York. Condition A: grommets at top with string attached. Signed and numbered 94 / 250 by R. H. Russel. Paper. "Perhaps an example of the very best of Mr. Penfield's earlier work. Excellent in composition, color, line and simplicity of action, it seems strongly imbued with the influence of Steinlen . . . [but has] a place of its own among American posters" (Price p. 161). Of the cover, Price writes that the image is "saliently sincere" and he is delighted to announce that its artistic merits warrant that it "could be hung beside Steinlen's Lait pur Sterilise." This poster calendar was issued in two editions, one in which the pages were printed on both sides and this deluxe edition of 250, hand-signed by R. H. Russell, containing 4 full color images (each with a 3 month calendar) and a separate black and red proof. Kiehl 191, DFP-I 373, Virginia p. 81.
