Lot 2850: [Emblemata]. Esbatimento moral, des animaux.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [Emblemata]. Esbatimento moral, des animaux. Antw., Ph. Galle, n.d. (±1578), (6),121 [of 126] lvs., engr. ill. on title-p. and 122 (of 125) emblems by M. GHEERAERTS THE ELDER, contemp. vellum. - Lacks the final 3 lvs. w. 3 emblems. Loose in quires; final emblem lower half torn away; a few lvs. w. (restored) marginal tears and w. some (finger)soiling; title-p. soiled and w. old owner's annots. Vellum creased, soiled and warped. Sold w.a.f. = Rare French adaptation of E. DE DENE, De warachtighe fabulen der dieren (1567), but "its order is very different from the one adopted by De Dene. This is not simply due to the fact that the French translation adds eighteen new fables to the original 107. The difference in ordering can also be explained by both intrinsic poetical and material reasons" (P.J. Smith, Dispositio: Problematic Ordering in French Renaissance Literature, 2007). Landwehr 231; Praz p.314f; Bodemann 48.1; Fabula docet, p.47ff; Belgica Typografica 838. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXIV.
