In the struggle for the succession after David's death, Joab favored David's elder son Adonijah. Unfortunately for him, the throne passed to a younger son, Solomon. The new king sent Benaiah, one of David's "mighty men" (1 Chronicles 27:6), who had been captain of David's bodyguard, to assassinate Joab, who sought sanctuary in the tabernacle of the Holy Ark (1 Kings 2: 34). The son of a priest, Benaiah was reluctant to kill him in such a sacred place, so he called to Joab to come out. Joab answered "No, I shall die here." Benaiah returned to Solomon with an account of what had happened. Solomon's response was, "Do as he says. Strike him down ..." Benaiah returned and killed Joab as he clung to the altar. C

Set in the time of Alexander the Great, it tells the story of the unrequited love of the shepherd Aminta for the nymph Sylvia. Even after Aminta rescues her from the attack of a satyr, she continues to flee him. Later, he finds her blood-stained veil, and thinking her dead, tries to commit suicide. Now remorseful, Sylvia rushes to Aminta and he is revived in her arms. The smooth course of their love is then assured.
