A very large bronze cauldron. Early Eastern Zhou/middle Spring and Autumn period, 7th. century BC

Lot 144: A very large bronze cauldron. Early Eastern Zhou/middle Spring and Autumn period, 7th. century BC

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A very large bronze cauldron of ding type on three undecorated legs with a pair of angular U-shaped handles, capped by a flat lid with three L-shaped projections along the rim. On the body two registers filled with slender, angular, dissolved dragon forms separated by a thin band resembling a twisted rope. Restorations, the ring handle on the lid missing. Early Eastern Zhou/middle Spring and Autumn period, 7th. century BC. The following lots 144-149, Chinese works of art (lots 216, 402, 409, 411, 412, 477) and Japanese works of art (lots 581, 616) once belonged to Dr. Gottfried Friedrich Reber (1880-1959), world renowned collector initially of French impressionists, then under the influence of Carl Einstein, of Picasso and the French cubist painters. Reber made his money in the textile industry in Bremen and Wuppertal before settling down in Switzerland in 1919. In the late 1920s Gottfried Friedrich Reber (1880-1959) began to buy Chinese art, especially archaic bronze vessels and implements as well as ceramics of the Song and Yuan dynasties. In his estate we find a number of pages on which he typed a short description of the object and included a photo or drawing. Thus we know that he bought throughout Europe, from Yamanaka in Paris, Spark in London, Burchard and Gutman in Berlin and Meyl in Munich. Apparently he was visited by C. T. Loo in the summer of 1929, for he added Loo's comments in handwriting to the respective pages. Many pieces from his collection were shown 1929 at the monumental exhibition of Chinese art in Berlin. G.F. Reber bought Chinese art (he also collected Egyptian and Sumerian objects) as evidence of "lost cultures". His collecting focus was entirely on the primary innovative epochs of art. Reber decorated his luxurious Chateau de Béthusy in Lausanne with these objects placing them on small tables, mantlepiece and window sill. On the walls hung paintings by Picasso and the French cubist painters.
