Two Qing Dynasty Plates - 19th Century

Lot 1: Two Qing Dynasty Plates - 19th Century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Two Qing dynasty plates of a smaller size to be sold as one unit. One bears the 'dragon over the wall' design and the other has two phoenixes revolving around a central motif. The dragon over the wall design has half of the dragon on one side of the plate with the other half continuing on the backside. The phoenixes are particularly beatiful in their delicate compostion and calligraphy drawn lines. Phoenixes of this design have been used on Qianlong porcelain which could date the plate to be later 18th century although it could be early 19th century. The dragon plate likely is 19th century. Both plates were made at the Dehua kilns for they both exhibit the typical blue pigments and glaze characteristics known to have been made there. The dragon plate has some surface scratching from use wear on the front and on the back there is some heavier scratching in one spot. The phoenix plate has two chips on the outer edge. Both summon one's imagination into play and give wonderful references into ancient Chinese lore and mythology. The plates measure as follows: Dragon 15.2cm wide by 3cm high. Phoenix 15.5cm by 3.2cm.

Condition Report: The dragon plate has some surface scratching from use wear on the front and on the back there is some heavier scratching in one spot. The phoenix plate has two chips on the outer edge.

VLADIMIR IGOREVICH YAKOVLEV - Cat With Bird

Lot 3: VLADIMIR IGOREVICH YAKOVLEV - Cat With Bird

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Traditional cat with bird in mouth (1974). In good condition, with white passe-partout. Made on a sheet of drawing paper with size 86 * 62 сm (in gouache). Made scientific expertise in "State Research Institute for Restoration". Vladimir Igorevich Yakovlev (1934 - 1998). Vladimir Igorevich Yakovlev was a Moscow artist who in life acquired the reputation of a 'Soviet fool', a 'mad genius', an undoubtedly talented and original artist. The grandson of the famous landscape painter, Mikhail Yakovlev, one of the founders of Russian impressionism, he created an unforgettable figurative language in which the link between the human and reality is refracted in a special and vulnerable 'Russian' angle of classic avant-garde strategies of the 20th century. Yakovlev drew pictures practically blind. On the canvas was left the reflections of the sincere internal vision of the artist and expression in a pure form. This is particularly discernible in his upbeat primitivistic portraits and still-lifes. Yakovlev was a diverse artist but one of his favourite subjects was flowers - his hallmark, similar to the Nemukhin's cards. Unlike anything in nature, fragile and powerful, sunny and tragic, they were always cosmic and imbued with an 'intimate magical lyricism'. Most of his work formed parts of series but those pictures which are close in terms of their motifs are far from monotonous. The artist continually improvised, varying a line, colour, form, often naively simplified and always strict and honourable. Yakovlev's paintings use five or six principle colours, preferring restrained rather cool tones and without fail, white, injecting luminescence to the paintings. Influenced by his grandfather's painting, he created many impressionistic abstractions and landscapes. At the same time he also painted realistic still-lifes from nature and 'from himself', invoking deformation and abstraction. However, underlying his creativity is expressionism, revealing him the person and his internal life. This is the source of the impetuosity of his stroke, communicating the movement of the object and colour.

Qing Dynasty Wedding Bowl

Lot 11: Qing Dynasty Wedding Bowl

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This is a Qing dynasty wedding bowl that was most likely made in Jingdezhen, China. Similar bowls were found in the Desaru shipwreck of 1830. These wedding bowls were made for export, but had a quality that is similar to imperial wares. The bowl displays eight double happiness characters in total with four on the lid and four on the bottom half. The other designs include chrysanthemum flowers surrounded by scrolls. This bowl is of very high quality, is quite thin and was fired at a very high temperature giving it a high pitched resonance. The bowl has some small chips as you can see in the photos that do not take away from its admirability. The bottom half of the bowl exhibits a phenomenon seen in many Qing and Ming bowls in having visible horizontal lines in the glaze. These occur during the firing process when the glaze must run into tiny crevasses that were unseen on the porcelain before applying the glaze. The bowl measures 14cm high by 11.6cm wide.

Tianshun/Chenghua Bowl - Ming Dynasty China

Lot 13: Tianshun/Chenghua Bowl - Ming Dynasty China

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This is a genuine Tianshun/Chenghua bowl from the Ming dynasty China. The reigns are dated 1457-1464/1465-1487 respectively. The outer floral scrolls and the size and style of the inner mark match other Tianshun/Chenghua bowls in a Chinese porcelain database. Also similar is the overall bowl shape, the glaze color and blue rings positioned in the bottom of the bowl and on the flared upper rim. The inner mark has been used in other time periods, but is usually found on the base. The mark is named 'fu' which means 'happiness'. This bowl came from the Chao Praya river at Ayutthaya, Thailand. Ayutthaya was the ancient capital of Thailand from the 1300's until the 1700's, thus much trading was accomplished with the Chinese to bring in porcelain. You can see the coarse sand that has been semi-cemented inside the base while spending centuries under the river. The bowl is in great shape with two types of age crackling visible on both the inside and out. The fine colorless crackling in the glaze requires a closer inspection while the yellowish lengthy crackling is easy to see. The bowl has so little use-wear within that it likely was never used. It appears that there is a chip on the upper rim, but it occurred previous to applying the glaze as it is completely concealed. This antique is a great specimen for any collector of Ming bowls. The bowl measures 15.2cm wide by 6.7cm high.

Condition Report: The bowl is in great shape with two types of age crackling visible on both the inside and out. The fine colorless crackling in the glaze requires a closer inspection while the yellowish lengthy crackling is easy to see. The bowl has so little use-wear within that it likely was never used. Vladimir Igorevich Yakovlev - In Jail - 1975

Lot 34: Vladimir Igorevich Yakovlev - In Jail - 1975

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: In Jail (1975) with white passe-partout. Made on a sheet of drawing paper with size 86 * 62 сm (in gouache). Has scientific expertise in "State Research Institute for Restoration".
