Swiss Rare & Unique Victor Hugo Presentation Pocket Wat

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Swiss Rare & Unique Victor Hugo Presentation Pocket Watch, circa 1880's Case: 71 mm, nickel, sterling and white metal, raised leaf and vine patterns, back with superlative sterling raised Victor Hugo plaque Dial: white and light green enamel, black Roman numerals, golden Louis XV hands, silver and gold minute dots Movement: large gilt bridge, 11 jewels, lever escapement, non-magnetic hairspring In 1877, Victor Hugo's son and daughter-in-law both tragically died. He took care of the grand children and composed a series of eighteen poems entitled L'Art D'Etre Grand-Pere (the art of being a Grand Father). During this time, the famous Parisian father and son team of Alfred and Pierre Franier were manufacturing special oversize watch cases with wonderful Art Nouveau inspired themes. The Franier signature is found on the case back of this superlative timepiece, which was designed and made for Victor Hugo as a special tribute depicting his love for his daughter-in-law and grand children. The scene shows a contemplative Victor Hugo as an angelic child points to the titles of his poems etched on a pedestal. He is embraced by his daughter-in-law as she points towards his heart. Victor Hugo died in 1885 and it is assumed that this watch would have been given to him late in his life. One can only imagine the emotions he felt when he received this very special gift.

The split chronographs made in the 1907 period were often kept in the factory as Patek Philippe developed and perfected the split function and the accuracy of the complication. They were later cased and sold in the late 1920's as evidenced by the present lot.

The double red lines show different sizes: the "SUBMARINER 2000", is smaller than the first line "Sea-Dweller". When examined closely the printing appears to be made up of a series of small dots, rather than direct brush stroke type application. The present watch also has the transitional series case back which is distinguished by the lettering "Rolex Patent Oyster Gas Escape Valve" engraved around the back as opposed to the engraving being straight across the back as found on earlier versions. The transitional series is believed to have been produced between 1977 and 1978, with serial numbers in the 5.1 to 5.2 million range.
