Two-part wardrobe, with a lift-off cornice, paneled doors, shell-carved central stile, and a shaped base. Old finish. 84.5"h. 64.5"w. 23"d. The two-part construction of this wardrobe is similar to the construction of wardrobes from the Mennonite communities of Sonnenberg and Bluffton, but the carving, particularly the shells, are reminiscent of the rococo carving that appears on furniture from the Franco-German town of Louisville (Stark County).

Pierce 1979" along with "Not for Sale". Original frame. 17"h. 23"w. Striking example of Pierce's illustrations of Biblical stories. This work shows the scene from the Bible's Book of Numbers, Chapter 13, Verse 23 where two of Moses' scouts ("spies") are returning from the Promised Land "with one cluster of grapes, and they bear it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs". In addition are two labels, one with the title The Spies from a gallery exhibition and the other a collection tag from the Columbus Museum of Art with its museum number of 85.3.86 (also numbered on the back of the piece).

Condition Report: This painting, along with the collection of sketches also in this auction, descended from a Cleveland neighbor of Willard's , who was given it by the artist prior to Willard's death in 1918. Archibald Willard witnessed the Civil War first hand, serving in Company C, 86th OVI as a sergeant and later re-enlisting in the 176th OVI. During his service, the 87th were involved in the capture of some of the Morgan's Raiders in Ohio and were garrisoned at Cumberland Gap from the fall in September 1863 to January 1864. During this time, Willard sketched scenes of camp life and the surrounding area. After the war, some of his drawings were reproduced by Cleveland photographer, James F. Ryder. In the July 1912 issue of The Housekeeper, Willard was quoted as followed " During the Civil War, I was a soldier, and I drew pictures of camp and army life ...I may still have some pictures which I made while our regiment lay at Cumberland Gap." Description: CIVIL WAR SKETCH BY ARCHIBALD M. WILLARD (OHIO ,1836-1918). Graphite on paper, unsigned. Troops marching by wooden sided homes, the civilians lined up to watch, a cannon barrel separated from its carriage lays by the road side. Probably in the Cumberland Gap. 7.75"h. 11"w. Taken from sketchbook.

Condition Report: This collection, along with the paintings offered as lots 446 and 475, descended from a Cleveland neighbor of Willard's , who was given it by the artist prior to Willard's death in 1918. Archibald Willard witnessed the Civil War first hand, serving in Company C , 86th OVI as a sergeant and later re-enlisting in the 176th OVI. During his service, the 87th were involved in the capture of some of the Morgan's Raiders in Ohio and were garrisoned at Cumberland Gap from the fall in September 1863 to January 1864. During this time, Willard sketched scenes of camp life and the surrounding area. After the war, some of his drawings were reproduced by Cleveland photographer, James F. Ryder. In the July 1912 issue of The Housekeeper, Willard was quoted as followed " During the Civil War, I was a soldier, and I drew pictures of camp and army life ...I may still have some pictures which I made while our regiment lay at Cumberland Gap."
