Trouillet, gift from the artist With Arnold & Tripp, London, 1890 M. Tempelaere, circa 1895 Private collection, London Newhouse Galleries, New York Mr. and Mrs. F. Howard Walsh, Fort Worth, TX Walsh Family Art Trust Literature: A. Robaut, L'Oeuvre de Corot, Catalogue raisonne et illustre, Paris, 1965, vol. III, no. 1607, pp. 126-127, illus. La Tour Dans des Arbres was painted at the height of Corot's career, at a time when his command of outdoor light and atmospheric effects reached its full maturity. During this period the artist was enthralled by the pastel colors and darkening shades of the early evening, and his delicate treatment of the twilight as it spreads across the landscape in this work epitomises this fascination. Here, a brooding foreground of deeply shaded browns and greens is suddenly crossed by the figure of a woman, whose red skirt and white headscarf strike a note of contrast that leads the eye toward the sonorous pinks and oranges of the distant sky. In his catalogue raisonné of Corot's work, Alfred Robaut relates that, while working on this particular panel, the artist became so absorbed in the piece that he did not notice that night was swiftly falling. Suddenly, it was too dark to distinguish the colors in his paint box; to finish the painting, he quickly added the woman on the hillside, having no idea what colors he had used until the following day. Works like La Tour Dans Les Arbres, with its almost Romanic sensibility, created Corot's reputation as "the poet of the landscape," and indeed caused him to be reveared as the most important landscape painter of his day. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Edward Burne-Jones British, 1833-1898 May Margaux, a Study for Clerk Saunders, circa 1859-1865 Stamped EBJ (ur), inscribed Clerk Saunders/May Margaux (lr) and inscribed Clerk Saunders/May Margaux in pencil (ll) Graphite pencil on paper 13 1/2 x 6 5/8 inches (34.3 x 17 cm) This sheet is a study for Burne-Jones's painting Clerk Saunders now in the Tate Gallery. The painting illustrates an English folk ballad of the same name. The figure depicted in the drawing is the heroine of the story, May Margaux, who is seduced by Saunders, who is himself then killed by one of her brothers. The drawing is a fine example of Burne-Jones's Pre-Raphaelite period, which spanned from about 1859 to 1864. The model was apparently Elizabeth Siddal, herself a Pre-Raphaelite artist and the wife of the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. We are grateful to Dr. Elisa Korb of Misericordia University for confirming the attribution to Burne-Jones, based on photographs, and for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. •

Edward Burne-Jones British, 1833-1898 The Marriage of Pyramus and Thisbe

Lot 18: Edward Burne-Jones British, 1833-1898 The Marriage of Pyramus and Thisbe

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Edward Burne-Jones British, 1833-1898 The Marriage of Pyramus and Thisbe Possible partial signature Jon... (lr) Graphite pencil and watercolor on paper laid down to japanned paper 9 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches (24.8 x 17.1 cm) The Marriage of Pyramus and Thisbe pictures an alternative ending to the tale of star-crossed lovers described in Book IV of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Forbidden from marriage by their feuding families and failing in an attempted elopement, Pyramus and Thisbe end their lives. Here, Burne-Jones imagines their apocryphal union, the lovers embraced by the winged, rose-garlanded figure of Eros. Maria Cassavetti Zambaco, a Greek sculptor who frequented the Pre-Raphaelite circle and who was Burne-Jones's mistress from 1866, modeled for Thisbe. The artists' liaison ultimately paralleled that of Pyramus and Thisbe: Zambaco attempted suicide in 1869, and their affair fizzled around 1875. This work's symmetrical composition, geometric forms and saturated color scheme intimate that it served as a tile, embroidery or stained glass design for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Burne-Jones was a partner in the British decorative arts firm and its leading stained glass designer. A larger and probably earlier version of this piece appeared on the art market in 2003. We are grateful to Dr. Elisa Korb of Misericordia University for confirming the attribution to Burne-Jones, based on photographs, and for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. C

Condition Report: Paper toned. Pin hole in the margin at the upper left edge. Possible U-shaped repair to the paper at the sleeve of Pyramus at the upper center right, approximately 1/4 of an inch. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.

Description: Jane Erin Emmet de Glehn American, 1873-1961 The White Villa, 1934 Signed Jane de Glehn and dated 1934 (lr), inscribed as titled on the reverse Oil on board 18 1/8 x 23 7/8 inches (46 x 60.6 cm) Provenance: Private collection, London Private collection, London Exhibited: Royal Academy, London, 1935, no. 513 Jane Emmet, the youngest of the three Emmet artist-sisters, studied at the Art Students League in New York before traveling through Europe, where she furthered her training in Parisian ateliers. At age seventeen, she and her sisters met and befriended John Singer Sargent. After her marriage in 1904 to the British artist Wilfrid De Glehn, she and her husband traveled often with Sargent, painting with him in Italy and Greece. Here, using a Sargentesque fluidity, de Glehn captured the patterns of light and shadow cast on the white walls of a Mediterranean villa ensconced in flowering vines and shrubs. Standing in the shadows, a young woman in Grecian-inspired drapery plays the role of a classical sculpture. Her presence suggests the way in which the de Glehns seamlessly intermixed life and art. He was a member of London's prestigious Royal Academy, as well as the New English Art Club, and his paintings were exhibited regularly in London, Paris, and in the United States. While assisting Edwin Austin Abbey in his murals for the Boston Public Library, de Glehn befriended Sargent, on whose murals for the library he also assisted. Description: Jan Van Chelminski Polish, 1851-1925 Napoleon Passing through the Guadarrama Mountains, 1808 Signed Jan V. Chelminski (ll); inscribed Hazel Hortman on the stretcher Oil on canvas 30 5/8 x 39 5/8 inches (77.8 x 100.6 cm) There is a painting entitled The Crossing of the Guadarrama Pass, Campaign in Spain, 1808 listed in a catalogue of an exhibition at M. Knoedler & Co., New York, Military Pictures of the French, Russian, Polish and British Armies by J.V. Chelminski. The exhibition was held from Jan. 31 to Feb. 12, 1916. The painting is listed as no. 20. In the early years of the Peninsular Wars, shortly after Napoleon turned on his former ally Spain, the Battle of Somosierra was a pivotal campaign by the French against the Spanish army. Aided by the Polish Chevau-Legers of the Imperial Guard on the other side of the mountain pass, the French were able to remove the last barrier on the road to Madrid, which fell to Napoleon only a few days later. Chelminski chose to depict Napoleon's advance through the Somosierra Pass in the Guadarrama Mountains on the morning of November 30, 1808. Napoleon's troops, shown hunched and braced against the frigid morning air, follow closely behind their intrepid leader up the frozen pass towards the Spanish contingent. Such carefully observed effects as these made Chelminski one of the great history painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. C Property of a New York Collector
