Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jan Van Chelminski Polish, 1851-1925 Napoleon Passing through the Guadarrama Mountains, 1808 Signed Jan V. Chelminski (ll); inscribed Hazel Hortman on the stretcher Oil on canvas 30 5/8 x 39 5/8 inches (77.8 x 100.6 cm) There is a painting entitled The Crossing of the Guadarrama Pass, Campaign in Spain, 1808 listed in a catalogue of an exhibition at M. Knoedler & Co., New York, Military Pictures of the French, Russian, Polish and British Armies by J.V. Chelminski. The exhibition was held from Jan. 31 to Feb. 12, 1916. The painting is listed as no. 20. Chelminski's second wife, Leonia, was the daughter of New York art dealer, Michael Knoedler. In the early years of the Peninsular Wars, shortly after Napoleon turned on his former ally Spain, the Battle of Somosierra was a pivotal campaign by the French against the Spanish army. Aided by the Polish Chevau-Legers of the Imperial Guard on the other side of the mountain pass, the French were able to remove the last barrier on the road to Madrid, which fell to Napoleon only a few days later. Chelminski chose to depict Napoleon's advance through the Somosierra Pass in the Guadarrama Mountains on the morning of November 30, 1808. Napoleon's troops, shown hunched and braced against the frigid morning air, follow closely behind their intrepid leader up the frozen pass towards the Spanish contingent. Such carefully observed effects as these made Chelminski one of the great history painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. C Property of a New York Collector

Lot 19: Montague Dawson British, 1890-1973 Chasing the Slaver: Her Majesty's Brig Acorn in Chase of the Piratical Slave...

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Montague Dawson British, 1890-1973 Chasing the Slaver: Her Majesty's Brig Acorn in Chase of the Piratical Slave Gabriel, July 6th, 1841 Signed Montague Dawson (ll) Watercolor with traces of pencil on paper laid down on board 21 x 29 3/8 inches (53.4 x 74.5 cm) Parliament's passage of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 1806 not only promulgated Britain's increasing discomfort with human trafficking, but also led to formation of the Royal Navy's West African Squadron, based in Sierra Leone and charged with the elimination of the Atlantic slave trade. Vessels such as the H.M.S. Acorn policed the West African coast, stopping, searching and seizing ships suspected of carrying slaves. The present work depicts a notorious incident on July 6, 1841, when the Acorn spotted the Iberian Gabriel angling to pillage the British India, a barque relaying migrants to Australia. According to the contemporary Journal de Havre: At three in the afternoon the Acorn fired, and the Gabriel returned the fire, at the same time hoisting Portuguese colours. The chase continued for twelve hours, during the whole of which time firing was kept up by both vessels, but eventually the Gabriel was dismasted and captured. The escapade documented in this work was initially inspired by the masterful oil of the same event by Nicholas Matthew Condy, The Capture of the Slaver Gabriel by HMS Acorn, 6 July 1841,which is presently housed in the Royal Museum at Greenwich. An almost exact composition in oil by Dawson also exists. C Property of a New York Collector
