Auction Description for Auctionata: Modern and Contemporary Art
Viewing Notes:
A preview at Auctionata on July 29/30 is only possible by appointment. Tel: +49 30 9832 0221, Email: sales@auctionata.com
Sale Notes:
"The selection in this auction reflects the diversity of 20th and 21st century art: new materials and techniques create more and more enriching and challenging opportunities. The Bauhaus artist Franz Ehrlich used different metals, acrylic glass and wood in his abstract sculpture from 1928, while Horst Jannsen used lead and coloured pencils for his subtly erotic drawing "Panne" from 1971. With reverse glass paintings, exponents of Naïve art revived a technique that was especially popular in the 19th century. The Chilean artist Roberto Matta uses black felt pen for his drawings and the Danish artist Jeppe Eisner paints large-scale works with oil on canvas, even in the 21st century. With such an eclectic mix, an exciting auction awaits you."
Also offered are a photograph by Anselm Adams, surrealist colour lithographs by Paul Wunderlich and abstract colour explosions by Terry Williams which round out this broad range of artworks.

Abstract Sculptural Relief by Franz Ehrlich, Germany 1928

Lot 1: Abstract Sculptural Relief by Franz Ehrlich, Germany 1928

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Brass, iron, copper, canvas, panel, acrylicGermany, 1928Franz Ehrlich (1907-1984) - German architect and graphic artist of the BauhausOverall dimensions: 36 x 48 cmVery good conditionThis sculptural relief by the German Bauhaus artist Franz Ehrlich impresses due to its play with different forms and materials. The oval background is covered with beige fabric where different shapes meet different materials. They are arranged geometrically and form an enjoyable area of tension. The sculptural relief is in very good condition and only shows minor traces of age and wear. The frame is slighty chipped, especially at the lower parts. The brass area partially had been repatinated. The overall dimensions are 36 x 48 cm.Franz Ehrlich (1907-1984)Franz Ehrlich grew up in Leipzig and studied - following a precedent apprenticeship as a machine fitter - at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he first completed a certification exam as a carpenter and later worked for Walter Gropius, from 1927 to 1930. Due to his communist disposition, he was charged with "preparation of high treason" by the Nazis and incarcerated in Zwickau prison and later in the concentration camp Buchenwald. The fact that he designed the front gate inscription, "JEDEM DAS SEINE" [to each their own, or figuratively: everyone gets what they deserve], in Buchenwald, is acrimonious without parallel. Between 1943 and 1945, he was a soldier in the Wehrmacht punishment unit 999 in Greece, and subsequently became a prisoner of war. In 1946, Ehrlich was able to return to Germany and became head of the department of reconstruction in Dresden. He was involved in many significant constructions in the post-war era and is held in esteem for being one of the few artists in the GDR who were able to preserve at least some autonomy in their use of forms.BauhausThe Bauhaus was founded 1919 in Weimar by Walter Gropius under the slogan, "Bau der Zukunft [construction of the future]", as an art school that was meant to teach all arts unified with architecture into an ideal entity, or in Gropius' words, "to create a new guild of craftsmen, without the class distinctions that raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist." In 1925, the school moved to Dessau and began cooperating with the industry under the motto, "Art and Technology - a new unity". The first tubular steel furniture went into production, "Meisterhäuser [master houses]" designed by Gropius were built, and international attention was attained. After Gropius, Hannes Meyer and later Mies Van der Rohe were directors of the Bauhaus, which had to move to Berlin in 1932, only to be finally closed under Nazi pressure in 1933. Many of the former protagonists fled to the USA where they kept on spreading the ideas of the Bauhaus with great success.

Watercolour

Lot 2: Watercolour "Bass Flower" by Franz Ehrlich, 1971

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Watercolour and pencil on paperGermany, 1971Franz Ehrlich (1907 - 1984) - German architect and graphic artist of the Bauhaus Monogrammed and dated lower right, "Eh 71"Overall dimensions, framed: 48 x 36 cmVery good conditionThis beautiful watercolour of the Bauhaus artist Franz Ehrlich conforms, in its systematic and geometric structure, to the Bauhaus aesthetic that arose from the functionality and the requirements of the industry. The Bauhaus artists were 'masters of form' who also experimented with new concepts of colour, which is evident in Ehrlich's watercolour; it has a flower-shaped composition, arranged around three axes. Grey spikes of sorts, somewhat resembling the endpin of a double bass, are located on each axis, and each 'petal', too, picks up on the shape of the instrument. These 'petals' shine in varyingly intense shades of pink - some brighter, some darker - and are bound by a white border. An ebony sound hole with a glaring red outline is at the centre of this blossom-like composition. Red and black appear like the roots of the paler shades of pink and grey surrounding them and, due to their sudden intensity, they constitute a clear focal point of the arrangement. The dimensions of the sheet are 48 x 36 cm. The watercolour is monogrammed and dated lower right, "Eh 71". The work is in very good condition except for one small colour loss lower left and another on the upper margin, where traces of glue are also visible. The sheet margins display minimal blemishes and there is a tiny crease mark in the lower left corner.Franz Ehrlich (1907 - 1984)Franz Ehrlich grew up in Leipzig and studied - following a precedent apprenticeship as a machine fitter - at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he first completed a certification exam as a carpenter and later worked for Walter Gropius, from 1927 to 1930. Lot 15: Oil painting "Abstract Composition", by Christo Coetzee, 1974

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasSouth Africa, 1974Christo Coetzee (1929-2001) - South African painterPaintings by Christo Coetzee fetch up to 58,000 Euros at international auctionsSigned and dated lower right „Christo Coetzee 74"FramedOverall dimensions, framed: 83.5 x 70.5 cmVery good conditionCoetzee, born in 1929, is one of the best-known South African artists of the 20υth century. Thanks to his many stays abroad, during which he formed friendships with European artists, Coetzee's art shows influences of both European and African traditions and forms a completely distinct and unique language of forms. This painting is one of only a few completely abstract compositions in Coetzee's oeuvre. In front of a background of brown, black, beige and blue dashes, we find a large colour field framed by white stripes and consisting of black and yellowish areas. Though its silhouette slightly resembles an African tribal mask, there is no clear connection to any real object. Thick, nearly three dimensional brush strokes have been splashed across the colour field. The composition seems to have been created in layers, starting from the flat background up to the thick colour strokes on top. The flat background surrounds the composition, creating a visual consistency; the painting looks well-balanced, despite the seemingly spontaneous colour application. The painting is in very good condition and so is the original period frame. The overall dimensions, framed, measure 83.5 x 70.5 cm; the dimensions of the canvas measure 73 x 60 cm. The painting is signed lower right, "Christo Coetzee 74".Christo COETZEE (1929-2001)Christo Coetzee was born in Johannesburg in South Africa. He visited the University of Witwatersrand between 1946 and 1950 and formed part of the so called Wit-Group, an informal artists group. Coetzee had his first exhibition in 1951 and was then able to go to London with a scholarship. He went to Rome and Paris as well, where he exhibited together with famous artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Alexander Calder. He won several awards and medals and his former house has been turned into the Christo Coetzee House Museum and Gallery. Works by Coetzee can be seen in museums all around the world, in Canada, France, Italy, Taiwan and The Netherlands and of course in South Africa.

Description: Mixed technique on paperEduard Bäumer (1892 - 1977) - German painter and printmakerBeautiful view of an orange groveMonogrammed and dated lower right "NOV. 75 EB" Paintings by Eduard Bäumer fetch up to 16.000 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 67 x 53 cm, image: 51 x 38 cmThis beautiful composition by Bäumer is one of his typical paintings. His works are defined by strong and radiant colours. Gnarled orange trees carrying heavy round fruits stand in front of the turquoise-blue-green background. The ground beneath the trees is covered in fallen fruits and the grass glimmers in a red-orange colour from the summer heat.As a trained decorator, Bäumer was committed to the rendition of beauty, and in comparison to his contemporaries was not interested in portraying the experiences of the war in drawn reminders, even though he and his family suffered during the Nazi regime and had to flee from Germany. In these difficult times Bäumer and his Jewish wife survived by illustrating children's books. This gay manner of painting, which depicts the described, yet also leaves room for imagination, shapes this work, too. Under passe-partout. Very good condition.Eduard Bäumer (1892 - 1977)Eduard Bäumer completed his training as a decorative painter in Frankfurt am Main, and then studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Städel-Schule. In 1927 he moved from Frankfurt to Berlin and studied at Johannes Itten's school. After a short stay in Paris from 1930 to 1931 he became acquainted with Cubism, which is also reflected in his prints from this time. To protect his Jewish wife Valerie Feix from repressions, Bäumer and his family moved to Salzburg in 1933, where the couple earnt their living by illustrating children's books. When Bäumer was conscripted in 1943, the family went into hiding. After the end of the war he took over the master class at the Akademie für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, where, in 1950 he was made Professor. His works are displayed in the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst and in the Albertina in Vienna.

As the title leads to assume, Wunderlich cites Edouard Manet's famous painting. He mirrors the couple who sits on the left in Manet's painting. The male is also dressed formally, while she is completely naked and looking right at the viewer. The second man sitting opposite them is only evident through his gesticulating hand. The surrounding landscape is delineated in a bare tree trunk and two horizontal lines. The only tender colour accents are set by Wunderlich in the pale violet tree trunk on the lower right and in the green leaves which are set in a garland around the head of the naked woman. Thus Wunderlich creates, inspired by Manet's erotic and atmoshpheric painting a cool study of a couple. Frame with traces of wear - sheet in very fine condition. Size including the frame is 71 x 97 cm.Paul Wunderlich (1927-2010)Paul Wunderlich, a German painter, draughtsman, sculptor and printmaker predominantly depicted erotic figures. In 1947 he began his printmaking-studies at the Hamburg School of Art under Willi Tietze and Willem Grimm. After his studies he worked there as a lecturer and later as a professor, too. During this time he also printed for other artists, for example for Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka. Wunderlich was awarded numerous prizes during his lifetime.

As the title leads to assume, Wunderlich cites Edouard Manet's famous painting - now to be admired in the Louvre. Same as in Manet's artwork, here we see two dressed men sitting with a naked woman. The flourishing woodland in Manet's painting is here delineated in a bare tree trunk and a horizontally defined landscape. Wunderlich shows details of their dress, yet neglects to depict the second woman in the background and the picnic basket is only suggested by one leftover bun. Bronze sculpture „Odalisque

Lot 20: Bronze sculpture „Odalisque", by Paul Wunderlich

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bronze sculpture and granite plinthPaul Wunderlich (1927-2010), German painter, graphic artist and sculptorSigned underneath "Wunderlich"Numbered "99/1250"Very good conditionOverall dimensions: 37 x 14 x 13 cm Paul Wunderlich who is mainly known for his graphic art, has chosen a well-known motive for his bronze sculpture: The Odalisque, painted by Ingres in 1814 and now shown in the Louvre. This Odalisque lies with her back turned towards the beholder, looking at him seductively. Wunderlich has seized and abstracted this motive already more than once in his graphics. This voluptuous female body has been abstracted even further in the bronze. She is still sitting upright and her behind is still quite voluptuous but her legs are now shown as one pointy stele. Her upper body can only be recognized with much fantasy as the only resemblances are an implied bellybutton and her breasts. If one would not know the bronze's name it would be quite hard to recognize. Knowing the name, an automatic tension arises between what the beholder has perceived after a quick look and what is represented that has been deliberately planned by the artist. The sculpture has been produced in a limited edition. It has been cast by hand in the lost wax process at Fritz Albrecht in Altrandsberg, Germany. The sculpture is engraved underneath with the artist's signature, the edition number and the moulder's mark. The overall dimensions are 37 x 14 x 13 cm;  the dimensions of the plinth alone are 37 x 2 x 13 cm; the sculpture without the plinth measures 28 x 5 x 12 cm.Paul Wunderlich (1927-2010)Paul Wunderlich, a German painter, draughtsman, sculptor and printmaker predominantly depicted erotic figures. Reverse glass paintings

Lot 25: Reverse glass paintings "Winter deals" by Želimir Kosović, 1983

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Reverse glass paintingsSerbia (Yugoslavia), 1983Želimir Kosović (born 1945)Signed and datedElegantly and modestly framedOverall dimensions each: 42 x 46cmVery good conditionThese two beautiful reverse glass paintings stand entirely in the tradition of the great Naive Painters of Serbia. Both show country scenes in the dark and cold winter. An elderly peasant woman carries a bag of jars on her back while walking through the snow covered land. A lonely farmstead can be seen in the background. In the second painting is a huntsman trudging through the snow in a similar landscape. His rifle is ready in his hand and his faithful dog is walking next to him. Singular green grass gives hope in both paintings that spring might be approaching. Želimir Kosović is following the path which such great painters as Ivan Generalić (1914-1992) and Janko Brasic (1906-1994) have started walking before him. Both have become famous in the 1930s with their until then unknown simplifying painting style. The Naïve Painters depicted their fellow countrymen at work and in their traditional costumes in a simple, naïve manner of representation. The paintings of the Naïves are like stories that are being told to children, fairy tale reproductions of the hard daily routine. Following the rural flight of the 1950s that could also be felt in Serbia, the people living in the cities were longing for nature and the allegedly ‚ideal world' in the country. The naïve art captures this feeling. The actual problems of the country life, the hard daily routine and the struggle for survival are blocked out. Instead, childhood memories and the dream of the paradise lost are reproduced. The painting style is equally simple: details are not considered, perspective correctness or the fall of shadows is not relevant to the artists. Kosović' honours these great works of art in his works and continues the tradition of the Serbian Naive Painting. Both reverse glass paintings are in very good condition. The frames show traces of use. The overall dimensions including the frames are for each 42 x 46cm, the dimensions of the image cut-outs are 26,5 x 30,5cm. Both paintings are signed and dated.

It shows a small peasant village midst of snow covered hills. Singular farmsteads and a church cower deep into the landscape. The leafless trees spread their thin branches only reluctantly into the air, just as if they would prefer to tuck them under their shoulders to keep themselves warm. Two intrepid farmers are the only thing alive that can be seen. Presumably out of pure need are they outside, sawing fire wood. Watercolour of a city by Gottfried Salzmann, 1970ies

Lot 33: Watercolour of a city by Gottfried Salzmann, 1970ies

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Watercolour on hand-made paperSigned in pencil lower left "Salzmann"Salzmann's watercolours fetch up to 6.000 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionOverall dimension: 67 x 52 cm (frame), image: 47 x 32,5 cm A typical painting by Salzmann with its light, transfigured colours contrasting each other, and a precise brushstroke to contrast the blurring of colours. Salzmann is dedicated to his fascination for architecture and urban construction and the viewer is looking from the typical perspective used by Salzmann: the bird's eye perspective onto the city. The buildings of the city are completely reduced, only its contours in front of the pink and blue interweaved sky are recognisable. The challenge posed by the artist himself, are the main figures of the work - the buildings - not painted, but rather translated to the viewer through blank areas of the paper. With a lot of precision Salzmann worked around the silhouettes of the buildings, and only occasionally emphasised them with forceful brushstrokes in a red-orange tone. The buildings thereby seem to rise out of the fog like unspoiled monoliths in pure, clear white. In passe-partout. Very good condition.Gottfried Salzmann (born 1943)During his studies, Salzmann made it his aim to visit all large museums in Europe and to view the most important works in art history in person. His visit to the Tate Gallery in London was defining - J.M.W. Turner's paintings impressed him so much that from then on he only wanted to paint like him. He focused on watercolours, a medium also increasingly used by Nolde, Kirchner and Schiele. Other influences came from Kokoschka, Klimt and Hradil, as well as Hundertwasser, whose love of architecture he shared.Salzmann again and again tried himself as a watercolour painter, trying out old techniques and new, unusual combinations. As Salzmann not only paints, but treats the paper in an artistic way, scratching, scraping, drying, wetting, and drying it again, his works of art are not just paintings, but verge on the sculptural. After the English manufacturer of his watercolour paper closed down, Salzmann changed to photo paper, and thus created works typical for him. The main topics of his watercolours are the city's poetry, the changes in society and architecture.

Watercolour of New York's skyline by Gottfried Salzmann, 1980

Lot 34: Watercolour of New York's skyline by Gottfried Salzmann, 1980

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Watercolour on hand-made paperCharacteristic example of the collectible New York seriesGottfried Salzmann (born 1943) - Austrian painterSalzmann's watercolours fetch up to 6.000 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 47 x 30 cm The Austrian artist Gottfried Salzmann is one of the most internationally successful contemporary watercolour painters. After a traditional start to landscape painting, Salzmann is particularly interested in the depiction of America's skyscrapers and urban life. His unique bird's eye perspective shapes this particular watercolour, too. Viewing from above, the viewer looks from Brooklyn towards New York's skyscrapers and the contrasting lower buildings in front. The entire watercolour is kept in the light red-brown tones of New York's red brick buildings and the blue-green shades of the mirrored glass facades of the skyscrapers in the background. Above, the light greige of the sky dominates. Through the typical water patches of the thinly painted watercolour, the work acquires the impression of rain and damp, the viewer enjoys the effect of seeing New York through a rainy pane of glass. The way in which Salzmann masters the technique of watercolouring, the blurred shapes are not a problem of the medium, but rather are used by him in a knowing way. The flowing moment, the passing plays a great role in Salzmann's cityscapes, thereby contrasting the unmoving stone skyscrapers. In passe-partout. Very good condition.Gottfried Salzmann (born 1943)During his studies, Salzmann made it his aim to visit all large museums in Europe and to view the most important works in art history in person. Salzmann"Salzmann's watercolours fetch up to 6.000 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionImage: 11 x 17 cm The depiction of a single house is a rare motif in Salzmann's oeuvre and shows the painter's fascination with inconspicuous objects. Skillfully he manages to make the house an interesting object for the viewer, as one is able to see it through the artist's eyes. The building occupies the entire sheet of paper, at the top, bottom and to the right it encloses the margins, only on the left hand side a narrow strip is left free. The viewer however is not given any indication of the house's surroundings, the area next to the building is flat in a rusty red tone which becomes redder towards the top but does not reveal any other motifs. On the right side of the painting, a dark, rusty red half circle edges its way into the image, and thereby nearly into the house, and with the colour on the left side, creates a colourful frame around the house. The house itself is white, only the ledge between the ground floor and the first floor is orange and the gable is painted in a dark, nearly browny red. On the roof ridge a small weather vane is mounted. The large terrace windows in the ground floor shimmer in a blue tone, while the four windows in the two upper floors show a grey-beige tone. This work is one of the most expressionistic in Salzmann's oeuvre and a rarity.

Description: Silkscreen printWilliam Crozier (1930-2011), Irish-Scottish landscape painterSigned lower right „William Crozier"Numbered, dated and titled Overall dimensions: 86 x 72 cmVery good condition Crozier's paintings fascinate by their intense colouring. The artist transports emotions through the colours of his paintings and tries thus to awaken emotions at the beholder. His coloured print "Heartlandscape" is due to its title an even stronger affective challenge. The heart shaped landscape is divided by a bright red street cutting right through it. The gentle round hills in the background form nonetheless a harmonic unity. The print is in very good condition. The slightly used frame lacks the protection glass. The overall dimensions measure 86 x 72 cm, the dimensions of the printed area measure 62 x 51 cm. The print is signed in the lower right and titled in the middle as well as numbered in the lower left „158/200".William Crozier (1930-2011) Crozier was born in Glasgow at studied at the local art academy between 1949 and 1953. He moved to London where he improved his style in the direction of the European art instead of the then so popular abstract art from the USA. He had many teaching assignments in the 60s. He was always anxious to intensify and renew his pictorial language. His paintings have been successfully sold and exhibited internationally. Two retrospectives about his work have been shown in the 1990s alone.

Watercolour with a sitting girl - Ernst Gradischnig, 1982

Lot 39: Watercolour with a sitting girl - Ernst Gradischnig, 1982

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Collectible of Gradischnig's oeuvreSigned and dated in pencil lower right "Gradischnig 82"Works by Ernst Gradischnig fetch up to 1.000 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 50 x 63 cm, image: 23 x 31,5 cmThe young seated girl, who gives this work its name, is seated in the middle of the painting, her legs are bent and pulled closely towards her body, she is looking out past the right edge of the painting. Her brown locks are pinned-up, she is wearing a violet top and on her feet she is wearing ballet shoes. The left half of the painting, into which the girl is leaning, is dominated by a large yellow flower, as though the girl was sitting in a garden. In the background a blue sky is visible. Gradischnig frequently dealt with the topic of ballet, and there are, for example, several oil studies of ballet shoes and paintings of acrobats on horses in his oeuvre. Degas, too, depicted his dancers in front of nature-imitating backgrounds, which were part of extravagant Parisian stagings. Possibly, this study, too, was made in the context of one of these phantastical stage sets. In passe-partout - sheet in very good condition.Ernst Gradischnig (born 1949)Ernst Gradischnig studied at the École ABC de Paris and from 1978 he studied printmaking and lithography in Salzburg under Professor Herbert Breiter. After completing his studies, Gradischnig operated his own lithography workshop in Klagenfurt. 1990 he chose to complete further training and learnt the art of ceramic wall design under Karl Schüssler in Wolfsburg. Many travels in the following years took him to France, Italy, Africa, Hungary and Russia. His works are found today in the Albertina in Vienna, in the Landesgalerie Klagenfurt, in the Essl Collection, as well as in other collections in Germany and Austria.

The figures and the bird, too, are colourful and shaped in an unusual way. The faces and the bird are finely detailed, yet as a whole the depiction is rather childlike-naïve. The colouring is seemingly cheerful, yet the faces seem troubled - an interesting piece with a title which invites the viewer to interpret and reflect. Very good condition of the sheet and also the frame shows only minimal traces of wear. Dimensions: 42 x 47 cm (framed), ca. 25 x 33 cm (cut out).Hans Christian Thomsen (born 1956)Hans Christian Thomsen, born in Silkeborg, Denmark, studied in Aarhus and lives and works in Silkeborg. He has successfully shown his works in Denmark and abroad. His paintings show surreal worlds with birds, fishes and humans in rich colours and in a fantastic and symbolic language. By mixing fragments from the past and the present, Thomsen creates new meanings. He usually works on more than one painting at the same time, they wait for him, incomplete, in his studio as he is interested in the process of working with them for some time; the possibilities a painting offers him fascinate him - he can take the offer or refuse it, he can finish the painting or leave it incomplete - these are the questions that occupy the artist.

In this painting, the colour red dominates, it frames and highlights the two depicted figures. Their faces are recognizable, despite the bright colouring the faces appear to be terrified - the artist has given each an extra pair of eyes to help express the possibly contradictory feelings inside each person. The painting plays with ambivalences and sexual symbols and invites you to take another look and delve into it.The large scale sheet is in very good condition - the frame shows traces of wear.Hans Christian Thomsen (born 1956)Hans Christian Thomsen, born in Silkeborg, Denmark, studied in Aarhus and lives and works in Silkeborg. Delicate chalk drawings emerge on these abstract colourful fields. The final work takes shape through intuitively done, multiple overpaintings. A similar unplanned process is the combination of the wooden tablets that together create a completely new work. The painting is in a very good condition. Only the small wooden strip that is supposed to frame the mosaic on all four sides is missing on the right side. It is signed and measure 152 x 121 cm (incl. the small wooden strip).Ulrike Völkl-Fischer (geb. 1954)The artist Ulrike Völkl Fischer was born in Aschaffenburg. Description: Felt pen on paperRoberto Matta (1911-2002), Chilean Architect and Artist of the SurrealismSigned lower right in pencil „MATTA"Dimensions: 40 cm x 50 cmVery good conditionThe black clubs of the two scary figures thud mercilessly on the body of the kneeling figure. Who are these people? The feet of the left guy are surrounded by two snakes that also seem to want to attack the poor figure on the ground. He seems to be enchained, the link chain being clearly visible on his body. Since Matta's art often reflects political events it might well be that this one is reflecting on one as well. But for now, the awkward scene remains unexplained and fascinating in a weird way.The drawing is in very good condition. The dimensions of the paper are 40 cm x 50 cm. The paper is signed in the lower right „MATTA".Roberto Matta (1911-2002)Matta was born in 1911 in Santiago de Chile. He studied architecture in Chile and later moved to Paris where he worked for Le Corbusier. He travelled a lot across Europa and met amongst others Federico García Lorca, Salvador Dalí and André Breton. Breton declared him to be a Surrealist and Matta really felt a connection to this group of artist. But first, he only wrote about architecture in a surrealistic magazine. He started painting himself in 1938 and immediately participated in the great Surrealism Exhibition in Paris. To avoid the war, Matta moved to New York, where he was very quickly accepted as an artist. He returned to Europe in 1948 and moved to Rome. Matta's art has always been politically influenced and many of his drawings show that.
