Description: Oil on canvas Austria, 1955 Soshana Afroyim (id Susanne Schüller, b. 1927) - Austrian painter of the Informel Signed and dated in red 'Soshana 1955' lower right Verso inscribed 'Soshana / 2 oeuvres / No 2 / 28 ¾ x 23 ½ / by Soshana' as well as on the tag with registration number inscribed, additionally on the stretcher frame with old title badge Total dimensions, framed: 84.5 x 71 cm Black-golden gallery frame Good condition Provenance: Private collection Austria Abstracted still life by Soshana with influences of the French Informel, her paintings fetch up to around 8,000 Euros at international auctions This painting by Soshana Afroyim (born 1927), who has also lived in London and New York. The painting is an example of the mid-period of her work, when she had turned towards abstract expressionism and lyrical Informel. The flowers in a vase appear strongly abstracted and are a good example for the fact that Soshana incorporated singular objective forms into her paintings even during her informel phase. In reduced and elongated form, the entire flower bouquet appears as a darker silhouette in front of a bright background, surrounded by expressive brushstrokes. The oil painting is signed and dated in red 'Soshana 1955' lower right. Verso it is inscribed 'Soshana / 2 oeuvres / No 2 / 28 ¾ x 23 ½ / by Soshana', as well as inscribed on a tag with a registration number. In addition, it bears an old title badge on the stretcher frame. Age-related shrinkage crack growth is visible, at one blossom on the upper left is a small loss of color, which is unobtrusive. The frame is slightly nudged. The stretcher frame is 73 x 59.5 cm in size. The total dimensions, including the frame, are 84.5 x 71 cm. Soshana Afroyim (born 1927) The artist Soshana Afroyim was born in 1927 in Vienna, with the civil name Susanne Schüller. After the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany, the Jewish Schüller family escaped via Switzerland to Paris and finally to London, where the family remained for a period of two years. In 1941, they moved on to New York, where Soshana enrolled in the Washington Irving High School. In a painting class she met her later husband Beys Afroyim. Due to his membership in the Communist Party the couple left the US in 1948 and lived in Cuba for nine months, where Soshana held her first exhibition. Soshana moved back to Vienna in 1951, together with her son. Here, she studied at the University of Applied Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, amongst other classes in the one of Herbert Boeckl. Dissatisfied with their prevailing academic concepts, she abandoned her studies and moved to Paris in 1952. She travelled around the world, and then lived for a few years in New York, before returning to Vienna again in 2005. Works by Soshana Afroyim were object of numerous national and international solo exhibitions, for example the exhibition at the Musée Picasso 1962 in Antibes. In 2010, she received the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. In 2011, the Gallery Bollag in Zurich honored her work with a retrospective. Soshana Afroyim lives and works in Vienna. Atanasov has repeatedly painted from sketches he made during his trips to Italy, Portugal or the United States. This work presents an abstract composition of a Mediterranean balcony in bold colors. The contrast between surface and illusion of space, between free brushstrokes and closed geometric form is characteristic of Atanasov's work. The painting is in good condition. His works from the 1960s have sold for up to 200,000 euros in the international auction market The present wall objects are the works of the Italian artist Agostino Bonalumi, and date from 1966. They were executed at a time, in which Bonalumi had already joined the ZERO group. ZERO was founded in 1958 by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. The ZERO artists searched for alternatives to the former art values, especially to the informel and tachistic art. In this manner, ZERO designated the 'zero hour', an intermediate zone, in which an old state becomes a new one. The works of the ZERO artists are situated somewhere between painting and sculpture and characterized by a minimalist aesthetic. The present wall objects are typical and very early examples of Bonalumi's oeuvre. His monochrome color surfaces on haptic image substrates are among his most sought after works. With these 'painting-objects' ('pittura-oggetto' in Italian), Bonalumi fitted the painting with a three-dimensionality. In doing so, he followed the ideas of his great mentor Lucio Fontana. The paintings are each signed and dated in pen on verso, 'ABonalumi 66'. They are overall in good condition with slight wear marks. The blue work shows minor nicks to the corners and a fine scratch mark in the left half of the painting. The white work is somewhat brownish due to its age, and shows slight craquelé and superficial dirt. The dimensions are 27 x 27 cm. Agostino Bonalumi (1935-2013) Agostino Bonalumi's apprenticeship began with a training as a draftsman at the 'Istituto Tecnico Industriale' in Vimercate near Milan. Between 1957 and 1958, he visited the studio of Enrico Baj in Milan. There he met Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, with whom he exhibited several times, as well as founding the magazine and gallery 'Azimuth'. Influenced by Lucio Fontana and the informel art, he mainly created reliefs and three-dimensional spatial arrangements. In 1960, the founders of the Azimuth gallery separated, and Bonalumi and Manzoni joined the 'ZERO' group. The following year, Bonalumi was a co-founder of the group 'Nouvelle École Européenne' in Lausanne. Since 1970, the artist also worked as a stage and costume designer for various theaters in Italy. Bonalumi has participated in a number of national and international exhibitions and biennials. His works are on display in major museum collections, including the Galleria Nazionale d' Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, and the Walker Art Center in Minnesota. From the late 1950s onwards Calderara developed a delicately colored and abstract style, reminiscent of the works by Josef Albers. Even though ratios and proportions were considered important, the execution remained intuitive nonetheless. Calderara's aim was, according to the artist himself, to 'paint nothingness, which is the whole, silence, light, measure, order, harmony. The infinite.' A calked poem 'For Antonio Calderara' inscribed 'Lago d'Orta' and dated 1973 is enclosed. The six watercolors are fresh in color and in very good condition. The watercolors are mounted together onto a support (reversible). The poem is separate. The sheets are unframed and measure 16 x 15.5 cm each. Antonio Calderara (1903-1978) In 1925 Antonio Calderara discontinued his engineering studies to devote himself to painting. As early as 1923 he had already had his first solo exhibition. He eventually found his favorite subject matter in the landscape of Lake Orta, where he lived for decades. In 1959 the artist created his first purely abstract painting and developed a geometric approach creating expressive compositions of flat squares, right angles and lines and only a few colors in the following years. Twice Antonio Calderara participated in the Venice Biennale and in 1968 he was invited to documenta in Kassel. Description: Oil on canvas Morocco, 1993 Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) - Moroccan painter Signed and dated 'Drissi 93' lower left Overall dimensions framed: 135.5 x 103 cm Narrow wooden frame Very good condition Provenance: Private Collection North Rhine-Westphalia Nude with cigarette in front of male viewers in a bar; works by the artist fetch up to 90,000 euros at international auctions Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) - one of the most important representatives of the 'art marocain' - has created this expressive oil painting in his characteristic expressionist style. The view into a night club, where men with stylized faces become voyeurs, exhibits an erotically charged atmosphere. In addition to the interesting subject matter - which seems all the more powerful in a Moroccan context - the expressive combination of colors delights in this painting. The colorful faces, the multi-hued bottles and the iridescent background merge into an attractive, expressive composition. The expressive power in Drissi's works is reminiscent of the great German Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Mueller. The painting is in very good condition, the frame is presumably original. It is signed and dated 'Drissi 93' lower left. The frame shows wear. The framed work measures 135.5 x 103 cm, the stretcher frame measures 100 x 133 cm. Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) Mohamed Drissi was born in the Moroccan city of Tétouan in 1946 and is considered one of the most original painters of his generation. He studied art in Tétouan, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels and New York. His favourite subject matter was the 'human being' and especially the taboo topic of prostitution. In this context, Drissi painted a colourful variety of abstract-expressive paintings of mostly androgynous women's bodies and mask-like heads. However, the faces of Drissi's figures reflect the full range of human emotions, which are enhanced by the postures and gestures. The expressive power in Drissi's works are reminiscent of the great German Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Mueller. The works of Egon Schiele and Edward Munch are also brought to mind. Drissi's works fetch record prices at international auctions. The Gallery Mohamed Drissi in Tangier, a contemporary art museum, presents some of his works. Rahmi 1960' Verso with the artist's name, date and title of the work 'Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu 1960 Clef Turque' Abstract composition on creased paper Overall dimensions, framed : 80 x 64 cm Sheet size: 71.5 x 56 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection Only rarely works by this revolutionary Turkish artist appear on the auction market; works on paper of comparable size fetch up to 45,000 euros at international auctions What makes this work of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu (1911-1975) so special is clearly evident: This abstract composition titled 'Clef Turque' [Turkish Key] is painted on creased paper, the folds of which become the constituent element of the composition. The relief-like surface seems to be created with a spatula or painted. A closer look, however, brings light to the actual manufacturing process. Eyüboğlu follows the style of geometric abstraction. The interplay of colors and shapes becomes the primary parameter of content. The work is signed and dated upper right 'B. Rahmi 1960'. On the back is the artist's name, date and title of the work, 'Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu 1960 Clef Turque'. The work is in good condition with some signs of age and wear. Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu (1911-1975) Born in 1911, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu was one of the founding members of the so-called 'D Group' in 1933, who distanced themselves from the older generation of artists and promoted the development of contemporary art. The artists of the group used new techniques and introduced new motifs, such as themes from the Anatolian region. The 'D Group' rejected the Impressionist style of the Istanbul School represented by artists such as Ibrahim Calli or Hamdi Bey. Instead of the soft shimmering depictions of the Bosphorus, they created hard, geometric lines and abstract curves that were perceived as provocative at that time. From 1937 onwards, Eyüboğlu worked as an assistant of Leopold Levy at the Istanbul Academy. Eyüboğlu should remain at the Academy until his death in 1975. Description: Egg tempera on canvas Germany, 2007 Song Hyun-Sook (born 1952) - Korean painter Verso titled, dated and signed "5 Pinselstriche 2007 Hyun-Sook Song", as well as inscribed in Korean Overall dimensions: 80.5 x 100.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: private collection, Hamburg, Germany Paintings by Song Hyun-Sook are characterized by her minimalist style and their high symbolic value; the auction record for her works amounts to 36,000 Euros The present painting is a sensual work of the Korean artist Song Hyun-Sook and was executed, as the title tells us on the verso, with five brush strokes onto the monochrome, greenish brown surface of the canvas. Song Hyun-Sook's works are characterized by a unique painting technique, as the artist only uses a few, consciously rendered brush strokes and rather monochrome, earthy tones. Hereby, the documentation of the painting process is of central importance, as Song Hyun-Sook entitles each of her paintings with the exact number of strokes needed to complete the painting. Conceptually, the artist is interested in combining Western and Eastern elements of art in her paintings. For this reason she uses the pigments of egg tempera as a medium which was often used in Western medieval art. At the same time, she applies the paint with coarse, stiff-bristled brushes made of horse hair, which were traditionally used in Korea for painting ceramics in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). The painting is in very good condition. There are slight marks visible at the edges of the canvas. Besides, the paint surface shows a very thin, bright stripe at the lower left side.
