ATTRIBUTED TO SANFORD GIFFORD: MISTY SUNRISE ON LAKE GEORGE

Lot 562: ATTRIBUTED TO SANFORD GIFFORD: MISTY SUNRISE ON LAKE GEORGE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ATTRIBUTED TO SANFORD GIFFORD: MISTY SUNRISE ON LAKE GEORGE Oil on canvas, signed 'S.R. Gifford' and dated 1866 lower right in another hand, signed 'SR Gifford Pinxt' in pencil on the reverse. 9 3/4 x 15 3/4 in., 24 x 29 x 3 1/2 in. (frame). Note: Gifford specialist Dr. Ila Weiss has examined this work and feels that it is significant for "documenting the evolution of the artist's concept". Dr. Weiss does not feel that the signature on the painting is by the artist's hand. However, she feels that the pencil signature on the reverse of the canvas appears to be authentic. In September of 1863, Gifford travelled to the Adirondacks and spent ten days sketching at Bolton on Lake George, where this scene is located. Dr. Weiss cites pencil sketches done during this trip, two of which were the basis for this painting. A larger, like work titled A Sunrise on Lake George, from 1877-79, was based on the 1863 pencil and oil sketches. The complete research letter from Dr. Weiss is available.

NATHANIEL HONE (1718-1784): PORTRAIT OF JAMES A. KIRKPATRICK

Lot 604: NATHANIEL HONE (1718-1784): PORTRAIT OF JAMES A. KIRKPATRICK

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: NATHANIEL HONE (1718-1784): PORTRAIT OF JAMES A. KIRKPATRICK Oil on canvas, bears the inscription 'James Achilles Kirkpatrick/Age 16/This portrait (indecipherable) Grandson/Cap. J.J. Phillips late (indecipherable)' on paper attached to the stretcher. 30 x 24 3/4 in. (sight), 39 x 33 1/2 in. (frame). Note: 18th Century British painter Nathanial Hone (the Elder) was a founding member of the Royal Academy and is known for his portraits and miniatures. Born in Ireland to a Dutch merchant, Hone moved to England as a young man and eventually settled in London where he established himself as a portrait painter. As a portrait painter, Hone's sitters include magistrates, clergy and aristocracy, but he courted controversy when one of his paintings was seen to mock the establishment. His work was rejected by the Royal Academy so he organized a one-man show of his own work, the first such solo exhibition. Hone's own life paralleled that of his sitter James Achilles Kirkpatrick, who was born into a noted military family but courted his own controversy while stationed in India. James Achilles Kirkpatrick was the son of Colonel James Kirkpatrick (1729-1818). Born in Charleston, South Carolina to Jacobite loyalists who had been implicated in the 1715 uprising and fled to America, Colonel Kirkpatrick returned to England at age twenty to pursue his military career. He was stationed at Fort George in Madras when his son James Achilles was born in 1764. Following in his father's footsteps, James Achilles became a colonel in the British East India Company's Army and was a resident at the court of the Nizam of Hyderabad. A cocky, young Imperialist, Kirkpatrick raised eyebrows with his Mughal-style dress and small Harem, smoking a hookah and speaking the local language. He converted to Islam to marry the daughter of Nizams prime minister and this inter-racial marriage caused a furor that eventually led to his dismissal from the army. This portrait was painted when James Achilles was only sixteen years old, yet the sly smile and alluring brown eyes hint at the adventurous and rakish personality that would develop and determine his years. Provenance: Joan Briton Antiques, New York; current owner. Property from a Private New York Collection
