Signed inverted by the artist in the negative in lower left. The cliché verre process employs glass as a negative for a drawing. The plate is covered with an opaque substance like paint or smoke and then scratched through to the glass much like an etching plate. This plate is then used as a negative and contact printed or enlarged onto a sheet of light-sensitive paper. The process was perfected circa 1853 by the French photographer Eugène Cuvelier (1837 - 1900) and used by painters of the Arras and Barbizon schools including Cuvelier's friend Corot, Daubigny, Rousseau and Millet between 1853 and 1874. Variants of the process were used in the 20th century by the Paul Klee, Man Ray and György Kepes. - Small rust spot in mid-area, a few light handling creases in corners, traces of previous mounting on the verso, otherwise a dark tonal print in very good condition."

Number 37638 in the negative in center of print; number and name of sitter in blue and red crayon on the verso.In 1854 Disdéri had the largest photography studio in Paris and in that year he patented the small-format carte-de-visite format made for the calling cards that were so popular at the time. This is a portrait series of the French composer Francois Emanuel-Joseph Bazin showing the sitter in various poses and with different props. - Fading in upper edge, some handling creases, otherwise in good condition.

Michaels, the period the print offered here is from. Their partnership was shortlived and from 1864 - 1866 Dutton operated a gallery on his own in Honam. The panorama here shows the American flag on one of the buildings, demonstrating the early American commerical representation in Canton.
