Lot 1: 2 copper engravings by Isaac Major and Jeremias Wolff, ca. 1700

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Two copper engravings, around 1700Isaac Major (1576-ca.1630) - German engraver and graphic artistJeremias Wolff (1663-1724) - German engraver and publisherSigned and inscribed in the plateBoth framed identicallyTwo out of a series of nine landscape engravingsDimensions each (framed): 51.5 x 39.5 cmThe first engraving shows a stream landscape with a huge rock at the center. A lake lined by reeds and with a castle on the right shore can be seen at the right. Ducks are flying out of the reed and behind the rock at the center, a hunter is hiding. To the left travelers are crossing a footbridge. The engraving is inscribed with „Isaac Major fe" and "Jer. Wolff excud. Aug. vind." and the plate number "3". A similar engraving is kept at the British Museum in London. The second engraving shows another stream landscape, in this case with a natural arch in the centre through which cascades can be seen. On the shore are two persons, out of which one seems to be sketching the scenery in the background: a castle on a hill top. The engraving is inscribed with „J. Wolff excud. Isaac Major fe". Indicated under the plate is the plate number „6". A similar engraving is kept at the British Museum in London.Dimensions each: 51,5 x 39,5 cm framed; the plate size is 37 x 24,5 cm each. Both engravings show discoloration and staining, the frames show extensive traces of wear and age.Isaac Major (1588-1642)Isaac Major was born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, as a son of a goldsmith and learned the art of engraving with Roelandt Savery in Prague, Czech Republic, around 1600/1610. He seems to have lived in Vienna in the 1620ies, but since many of his engravings are so topographically accurate it can be assumed that he travelled constantly. No paintings are known by him and he seems to have concentrated on engravings alone. Next to his own inventions, he also printed after popular prints by Savery and Pieter Stevens.Jeremias Wolff (1663-1724)Wolff, who was a learned watch maker, founded a small publishing house that became the largest art publisher in the first half of the 18υth century. He had the most important engravers working for him, but usually you will only find his name on the prints. As one of Augsburg's most important citizens he managed to push the founding of the Reichsstädtische Kunstakademie (= Imperial City Art Academy) in Augsburg in 1710.

It shows a part of the royal family, consisting of King George III, his wife Queen Charlotte and four of their altogether fifteen children. The young man to the right is presumably the heir to the throne, George IV. The Queen is shown doing some needlework while she is surrounded by the children and the family pets. The whole family seems very close, except maybe for the young, rather melancholy seeming young man who stares through the window at the harbor in the distance. The engraving itself is in good condition, yet the paper is somewhat browned and there are a few water stains on the lower border. The overall dimensions, framed are 56.5 x 74 cm, the dimensions of the printing plate are 49.5 x 63 cm. The stipple engraving is inscribed several times „Painted by Robυt. Smirke R. This Print is most humbly Dedicated by their most Dutiful and Loyal Subject JNυo. BOYDELL."and a few other inscriptions.Robert Smirke (1752-1845)Robert Smirke was born as the son of a travelling artist and was brought to London by his father in 1766, and apprenticed to a coach-painter. In 1772 he became a student of the Royal Academy and became a member of the Academy in 1791. His paintings are often rather small and monochrome and show great proximity to drawings which made them perfect for being multiplied as prints.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: EtchingSigned in pencil lower right "H. Escher"Hans Escher (1918 - 1993) - Austrian painter, printmaker and illustratorTitled in pencil lower middle "Sacco di Roma III" and numbered lower left "4/30"Dated lower left in the plate "1965"Works by Hans Escher fetch up to 700 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 50 x 41 cm (framed), 29 x 30 cm (plate)This powerful etching by Hans Escher delineates the looting of Rome by German and Spanish mercenaries in May 1527 - known today by its Italian name "Sacco di Roma". The looting represents a completely new form of war-violence through mercenaries, who only went to war for money and booty, and whose military conduct was hard to control. About 30.000 people died in the raid, they represented half the population. In art history the "Sacco di Roma" was repeatedly a motif and Hans Escher, too, often depicted this subject matter. In this portrayal Escher shows, in the foreground, a man lying on his back on the ground. A mercenary is taking a huge step over him with his right hand in a fist. The left leg is stretched forward in the direction of the background, while his right leg is pushing off the man's chin who is lying on the ground. His head is cut off by the top edge. In the background one can detect Rome's population, men, women and children fleeing with all they can. The fine figures do not look like they have a chance against the powerful hulk is coming towards them. Here, too, Escher is yet again able to depict an overall view frighteningly and life-like through few lines and an impressive composition. Framed, under glass. Frame with traces of wear - sheet in very good condition.Hans Escher (1919 - 1993)From 1935 onwards Hans Escher studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Ch. Guérin. After his return to Vienna in 1946 he completed his print studies at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Vienna. Since 1965 he has been a member of theVienna Secession. Escher is foremostly known as a printmaker and completed several cycles in this medium (e.g. Sacco di Roma, ten images to the book of Hiob). His themes reach from the portrayal of single people in solitude, to satires and to realistic images of urban life. Later he engaged himself with still life painting, which he often combined with complex topics.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Etching in miniature formatErnst Steiner (born 1935) - Swiss painter and printmaker, lives in ViennaSigned in pencil in lower right "ERNST STEINER" and numbered lower left "2/200"Works by Ernst Steiner fetch up to 600 Euros in international auctions. Viennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 28 x 40 cm, 7 x 19 cm (plate)This small etching by Steiner is a typical example of his oeuvre. Time and time again Steiner illustrates religious themes, whereby he frequently delineates paradisiacal scenes and representations of nature. In this etching two intertwined trees, one lighter, the other darker, positioned to the middle of the image, are soaring up into the sky. In their branches, at the trunk, two figures are caught, to the right a naked woman and to the left a naked man. Further up, the trunks disentangle and divide into each two wide branches. The one set form a large circle at the top, before their cusps intertwine yet again and form a heart-shaped spiral. The other set of branches are intertwined with each other to the middle of the circle and then break off to the right and left to end in snake heads. In the upper circle half a male head floats. In the background gently rolling hills extend. The biblical paradise motif is unmistakable, even if it is interpreted in an unusual way and represents an interesting challenge to traditional iconography. Framed, under glass. Frame with traces of wear - sheet stained and yellowed.Ernst Steiner (born 1935)Ernst Steiner completed his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, and at the Akademie für angewandte Kunst and the Akademie für Bildende Künste in Vienna. Colour etching of two smoking women by Adolf Frohner, 1970ies

Lot 36: Colour etching of two smoking women by Adolf Frohner, 1970ies

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colour etchingAdolf Frohner (1934 - 2007) - Austrian painter and printmakerMarked in pencil lower left "E.d'A." (Epreuve d'Artiste / artist's copy)Signed in pencil lower right "Frohner" Prints by Adolf Frohner fetch up to 1.000 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 54 x 69 cm (framed), 39 x 48 cm (plate) This rare etching by Frohner is up for auction at the same time as the exhibition „Im Blauen Dunst. Tabak in der Kunst" in the Frohner-Forum in Krems (May 13 to September 30, 2012). Frohner, who has perfected the drawing of female nudes, was especially interested in the portrayal of normal, not particulary beautiful women. Influenced by the gruesome past of the war, Frohner was no longer interested in portraying "the beautiful". Instead, he shows us a habitual scene of two women sitting on stools, smoking. The woman to the right shows us her back with her wide posterior on the stool. As she is seated slightly to the right, her stockinged, crossed legs, her left hand propped on her knee holding a cigarette, as well as her sketchy profile are visible. Even though only this one cigarette is seen in the etching, its smoke is enough to let the sky look like a huge black cloud developing from the cigarette. Opposite the smoker, her companion is also seated on a stool on the left hand side. She is propping herself up on her stool with the help of her right arm, which is pointed towards the viewer. Her back is extended and in an animated conversational pose. Both women are dressed in the same, very short dark dress and wearing high heels. The left figure is not wearing stockings and is showing a lot of leg, as she has pulled up her dress. The relaxed pose, short dresses and cigarettes suggest that they are not ladies of the higher society. The background of the painting is left unetched, whereby the caricature-like figures of the women are accentuated. The energetic and rather rough lines enhance the body parts and the faces, too, are treated less finely. With the detailed handling of the legs, arms and hands Frohner intensifies the body parts he sees as being most significant. Framed, under glass. Traces of wear on the frame - sheet in very good condition.Adolf Frohner (1934-2007)Adolf Frohner audited with the Wiener Akademie der Bildenden Künste from 1952 onwards. After working as a commercial artist and as an art critic he received a scholarship for his studies in Paris in 1961 with the help of Herbert Boeckl. Influenced by the Paris artists and above all the Nouveaux Realistes, Frohner decided to work as an artist. Already one year later he held his first exhibition in the Galerie Junge Generation in Vienna. He was part of the founders of theWiener Aktionismus. Frohner became known for his participation at the São Paulo Biennial in 1969, where he represented Austria. One year later, he again participated at the Biennial, this time in Venice. In 1972 Frohner, whose images often portray brutal scenes and female nudes, became Professor for Nude Portrayals at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Vienna, where he stayed until 2005. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Three etchings in brownish coloursTitled on the back „Platane au nuit", „L'olivier" and „Le châtaignier"Guy Renne (born 1925) - French painter from the ProvenceAll three signed on the lower right 'Guy Renne' and numbered on the lower leftSheet size: 33 x 43,5 cmFrom a Berlin private collectionDetailed tree 'portraits'Very good conditionGuy Renne, a French painter who studied in Paris under the German occupation, began his education by studying at the École des Beaux-Arts but soon spent more time in the museums than in the academy. Renne, who is originally from the Provence, returned to this region after his time in Paris and you can still find many of his artworks there. A constant theme in his work is the nature of the Provence as well as the four elements water, fire, earth and air. The three etchings demonstrate effectively what Renne was able to do and each tree can be recognized in its specifications. There is the plane with its widely spread branches and the tiny brittle branches on them growing straight up into the air. There are the abundant sweet chestnuts by the side of the road who demolish the old walls underneath their roots and you can also recognize the old and crooked olive trees in their bosk. The sheets are in very good condition. The plates all measure 20,2 x 26,7 cm. The sheet „Platane au nuit" has a water mark on the lower right saying ARCHES Frances. The sheets are numbered „Platane au nuit" 5/99, „L'olivier" 6/99 und „Le châtaignier" 3/99.

Description: EtchingHans Escher (1918 - 1993) - Austrian painter, printmaker and illustratorSigned in pencil lower right "H. Escher"Numbered in pencil lower left "3/40"Dated lower left in the plate "12.1972"Works by Hans Escher fetch up to 700 Euros in international auctions Viennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 66 x 51 cm (framed), image: 46 x 19 cm This fine vedute from Florence is in the tradition of great Italian vedute painters B. Piranesi and A. Canaletto. With a lot of feeling for the atmosphere of the city, Escher composes a quiet general view. The houses and palazzo are arranged in a half circle at the bottom of the paper and give way to a view of the sky, which consumes nearly three-quarters of the paper. Escher etched this with a stable hand, every stroke is there where it should be, nothing interrupting the calm composition of the piece. Framed, under glass. Frame with traces of wear - sheet in good condition.Hans Escher (1919 - 1993)From 1935 onwards Hans Escher studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Ch.

Description: Lithography on hand made paperPeter Stettler (1939-1998) - Swiss Artist and Professor at the School for Crafts in BaselHand signed and dated lower right "Peter Stettler 1976"Numbered lower left "467/500"Good conditionOverall dimensions: 45 x 53 cmThe sheet shows a mandolin and a carafe and some sheets of music in front of an even surface on two stands. It is not clearly recognizable if the surface shows an easel and what we see is therefore an image in the image or if what we see is a perspective contorted table plate. In both cases it is interesting to see that both, the mandolin's as well as the carafe's neck, exceed the plane area behind them. Looking at this lithography you are spontaneously reminded of Picasso's "Mandolin with Guitar" as you can find the same perspective contortions and the cubist way of drawing objects. The sheet is in good condition and has a few stains and is slightly creased along the margins. The lower margin shows a water stain. It has a water sign on the lower left. Dimensions: 45 x 53 cm (sheet), 34.5 x 29 cm (plate).

Colour etching showing a dreamer by Adolf Frohner, 1979

Lot 49: Colour etching showing a dreamer by Adolf Frohner, 1979

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colour etching in sepia tonesAdolf Frohner (1934 - 2007) - Austrian painter and printmaker Signed in pencil lower right "Frohner"Marked in pencil lower left "Epreuve d'Artiste" (artist's copy) and with a dated dedication"Der Frau Präsident von Herzen zugeeignet am 21.05.1979"Prints by Adolf Frohner fetch up to 1.000 Euros in international auctionsViennese Private CollectionOverall dimensions: 54 x 69 cm (framed), 48 x 63 cm (plate) In the lower half of this rare etching, a sleeping man is depicted. The viewer only sees the head, especially the white, slightly opened mouth, as the body is covered by a dark blanket. The sheet is a dark, partially hatched surface with a white pillow seemingly functioning as a frame for the dark head. The upper half of the etching depicts what the sleeping figure is apparently dreaming of. Six comically distorted female figures seem to be nearing the sleeping figure beyond the boundaries of the sheet - their light legs and feet have partly already crossed this boundary. While the three left figures are depicted nearly frontally, the right three are depicted in dislocated poses. The one body is leaning to the left, the head is not seen whatsoever, the only parts to be seen of another body are the legs, while its upper body is immersed in a dark cloud to the right of the art work. Between the two, a further figure is trying to go backwards across the dividing line, showing her posterior to the viewer, while between her legs a further distorted, screaming face is seen. The figures are partly dressed in underwear. Despite their nudity, no trace of eroticism is perceived; the impression is that the figures are sneaking uncannily, rather than attractively into the sleeper's dream. To the top right of the bedsheet, a further sleeping head is portrayed - possibly a symbolic transition between the light and the deep, dream-filled sleep. Here too, Frohner proves in few lines that he not only is the master of the female portrait, but is further able to capture eerie atmospheres. Good condition.Adolf Frohner (1934-2007)Adolf Frohner audited with the Wiener Akademie der Bildenden Künste from 1952 onwards. In 1961, with the help of Herbert Boeckl, after working as a commercial artist and art critic, he then received a scholarship for his studies in Paris. At that time he was already on the board of the Institut für Bildende Kunst. The Kunsthalle Krems, an exhibition hall for contemporary artists has taken on Frohner's name and is now called the Frohner-Forum.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colour lithographsDavid Lee (1944) - Chinese-American ArtistAll three signed lower right „David Lee"All three numbered, with artist seal and inscribedFramed with passé-partoutsOverall dimensions: 81 x 61 cmVery good conditionDavid Lee, a Chinese Artist, tries to create the perfect balance between the fine oriental way of painting and the western concept of clear and catchy design. His paintings are mostly done on silk and show fine cut outs of nature, like snapshots of special, quiet moments. They play with acuity and fuzziness, with depth and foreground and remind the beholder of the one second when looking into a camera that the lens needs to focus on a special subject. For just a short moment, everything else around is blurred. The subjects, on which Lee mostly focusses in his paintings, are birds or flowers. All three lithographs are in very good condition, so are the frames. The dimensions including the frame measure 81 x 61 cm, the dimensions of the plate measure 71 x 51 cm. All prints are hand signed and additionally stamped with a red artist seal. They are numbered „Untitled (Birds in Green), 155/300", „Hibiscus, 175/300" and „Untitled (Bird in Blue-Gray), 250/300".David Lee (born 1944)Lee was born in Canton, China, in 1944 but grew up in Hong Kong. He began painting when only four years old. He studied in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Inspired by the traditional Chinese art, he turned towards the silk painting that he combined with western design ideas. He was the youngest artist ever to win the Chinese National Painting Competition. He moved to Hawaii and focused on his paintings. His works can be found in numerous collections all over the world, amongst them the National Museum of Taiwan, the Chuk-Yun Museum in Hong Kong and the Collection of the Imperial Family in Japan.
