Overall dimensions, framed: 59.5 x 68.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private Collection Berlin A freely painted detail of a forest in rich shades of green. Bracht painted several variations of oak trees; his forest and tree paintings fetch up to 35,000 euros at international auctions Eugen Bracht (1842-1921) is one of the most significant landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century, who received his education in Germany's leading art academies Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf. The present painting, which was created shortly after the turn of the century, already shows a freer brushwork than Bracht's landscapes from earlier periods. Since the early 1890s, the painter had addressed the idea of plein air painting. Thus his later works, exhibiting a loose brushwork, a fresh range of colors and a more pronounced emphasis on color planes, became atmospheric impressions of landscapes. The painting is overall in very good condition. There is one small barely noticeable retouched spot below the tree trunk and left of it. Along the edges there are blemishes here and there caused by the nails of the frame. The work is signed 'Eugen Bracht' lower left, dated, titled and inscribed 'Park' and 'Eichen an der Kernsch...' in blue crayon on the verso as well as numbered 'Nr. 22' in brown (by the artist?). The gilt frame shows some losses. The framed work measures 59.5 x 68.5 cm, the artist's board measures 48.5 x 57.5 cm. Eugen Bracht (1842-1921) In Darmstadt Eugen Bracht was a pupil of the painters Friedrich Fresh and Karl Ludwig Seeger. The German landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer became aware of the student and enabled him to attend the academy in Karlsruhe. From 1861 onwards, Bracht lived in Dusseldorf, where he was a student of Hans Gude. After a few years in Berlin, he returned to Karlsruhe in 1876. Here he was able to gain recognition with its dune paintings in which he depicted the barren landscapes of the Baltic Sea coast and the Lüneburg Heath. Bracht undertook several trips to Syria, Palestine and Egypt. Thus his following works depicted mainly oriental themes. In 1882 Bracht became professor for landscape painting at the academy in Berlin, and later, from 1901 onwards, he taught at the academy in Dresden. Description: Watercolor over pencil on laid paper Germany, circa 1895 Eugen Bracht (1842-1921) - major German landscape painter of the 19th century, trained at the academies in Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf Signed in red 'E. Bracht.' lower right Ornate gilt frame Overall dimensions, framed: 40.5 x 58 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private Collection Berlin Shaded views of an oak forest on a rocky slope in Bracht's typical manner; his forest and tree paintings fetch up to 35,000 euros at international auctions Eugen Bracht (1842-1921) is one of the most significant landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century, who received his education in Germany's leading art academies Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf. The present watercolor, which was created around 1895, already shows a freer brushwork than Bracht's landscapes from earlier periods. Especially the background of the densely wooded environment is rendered with vigorous dabs of color. Since the early 1890s, the painter had addressed the idea of plein air painting. Thus his later works, exhibiting a loose brushwork, a fresh range of colors and a more pronounced emphasis on color planes, became atmospheric impressions of landscapes. The watercolor appears overall in very good impression. There is a tiny needle hole (barely visible) to the right rock. The reverse shows traces of a previous mounting as well as fiber remains of a supporting cardboard along the upper margin. Along the bottom the paper shows minorskinned spot. The work is signed in red 'E. Bracht.' lower right. The frame shows some losses. The framed work measures 40.5 x 58 cm, the sheet measures 20.3 x 38.2 cm.

Description: Oil on canvas Russia, circa 1910 Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky (1883-1939) - member of the Jewish Society for the Promotion of the Arts around Nathan Altman, after the October Revolution, one of the main representatives of Socialist Realism Signed in Cyrillic script lower right Broad gilt frame Overall dimensions, framed: 103 x 79 cm Good condition Provenance: Private Collection Upper Bavaria Dense forest in spring with Russian Orthodox chapel and figures, painted over a delicate pencil drawing; similar landscape views by the artist fetch over 325,000 Euros at international auctions The present painting by Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky (1883-1939) depicts a dense forest in spring, which opens the view to a Russian Orthodox chapel and a group of figures in the background. The Russian artist has painted over a preparatory pencil drawing in a myriad of delicate nuances. During his travels throughout Europe in 1909 Brodsky had become acquainted with the French Symbolists and Impressionists. This influence can be seen in his works created in the following years. The individual leaves are rendered with splashes of color in a neo-Impressionist manner. Thus the painting is infused with light and movement recreating the sunlight shimmering through the trees. In the period around 1910 Brodsky, who became well-known for his naturalistic portraits of Soviet leaders following the October Revolution, created several similar compositions with forest views onto an architecture. The theme shows the influence of Russian folk art, which characterizes many other works by Brodsky and also had a crucial impact on the early work of Wassily Kandinsky. The painting is in good condition. Some small retouched spots on the leaves in the center, only visible under ultraviolet light, the upper corners show some small losses of color due to framing. The work is signed in Cyrillic script lower right. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 103 x 79 cm, the stretcher frame measures 86.5 x 65 cm. Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky (1883-1939) At an early age Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky showed a talent for painting. From 1896 to 1902 he studied at the art school in Odessa. He then moved to St. Petersburg where he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, where Ilya Repin, one of the most important Russian artists of the late 19th century, became his mentor. In 1913 the latter portrayed Brodsky in one of his works. Brodsky showed his works at the Academy and other exhibitions. After his studies he traveled to Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Following the October Revolution Brodsky began to paint portraits of Soviet leaders and created some very popular portraits of Lenin. In addition, the artist was involved in the reorganization of art education in the USSR. From 1932 onwards he was professor and from 1934 director of the Russian Academy of Arts. He was also head of the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Numerous works by Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky are held by the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Depicted is a landscape near Muttenz in the canton of Basel with a view into a garden that is located at an adjacent forest. A narrow path leads along a fence, behind which the yellow facade of a house appears. According to the information from the current owner, this is the property of his grandparents, where Camenisch deposited his art supplies during his visit. The painting shows already re-realistic tendencies, which Camenisch increasingly developed during the 1930s, nevertheless it is still close to the style of Expressionism due to its intensely luminous colors. In 1924/25, Paul Camenisch had established together with Hermann Schwerer and Albert Müller the group 'Rot-Blau'. During their exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel in 1926, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner acquired one of Camenisch's portraits and eventually invited him to his home in Frauenkirch at Davos where staid from July until mid of September. During the time they spent together, he came particularly close to Kirchner's style of painting that one of his pictures, erroneously attributed to Kirchner, was presented in the Munich Nazi exhibition of the so called "Degenerate Art". Neither Kirchner nor Camenisch protested against the mistaken identity, they were probably, in their different ways, proud of the award. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'Camenisch 39'. For its age it is overall in good condition and shows faint craquelures in the sky as well as a pin point loss of color, barely visible, in the lower right area. The frame indicates slight signs of wear as well. The image measures 49 x 68 cm. The framed dimensions are 73.5 x 93.5 cm. Paul Camenisch (1893-1970) Paul Camenisch was born 1893 in Zurich . He studied from 1912 to 1916 architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Zurich and was subsequently active in several architectural firms. In the early 1920s Camenisch decided to become a painter. He spent a long time in Davos with the Brücke artists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and was greatly influenced by his work and the expressionism. It was also the mid-1920s, when Camenisch was about to start the artists group called 'Rot-Blau' along with Albert Müller and Hermann Scherer. After their death, the group was reestablished called 'Rot-Blau II', together with Hans Stocker, Coghuf (Ernst Stocker), Otto Staiger, Charles and Max Hindenlang Sulzbachner. In addition, Camenish was also co-founder of the Basel Artists Association 'Gruppe 33', from which he was excluded because of his political views. Although his style changed from Expressionism to Realism in the 1930s, his work was defamed in the Munich exhibition 'Degenerate Art' in 1937. Due to the legal obligation for the resale royalty in the art market the following applies: As a result of its membership in the AV Kunst, Auctionata charges additionally to the hammer price the contribution to the AV Kunst of currently 2.1% of the revenues from the sale of fine arts and photographs pro rata towards the buyer. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Finland, 1878 Fanny Churberg (1845-1892) - Finnish painter, who was already honored with a major retrospective exhibition in 1919 Monogrammed 'FC' and dated '78' in red lower right Wide gilt frame with plastic flower decoration Overall dimensions, framed: 63 x 73.5 cm Provenance: Private Collection Rhineland Nocturnal landscape scene of emotional depth by the innovative Finnish painter, whose work was appreciated only after her death; landscapes by Fanny Churberg fetch over 55,000 Euros at international auctions This oil painting by the Finnish painter Fanny Churberg (1845-1892) was created in 1878. It shows a rough natural landscape under the moonlight - a typical theme for the artist. The nocturnal scene is rendered in muted colors. Two houses are set on a pasture, still partly covered with snow, in front of a forest. Churberg's oeuvre is defined by representations of the Finnish countryside in late autumn and winter, especially scenes at dusk, during the sunset or in the moonlight. Particularly striking seems the unusually expressive brushwork with which the artist established her very own innovative style long before Expressionism as such found its manifestation in art. The work is in good condition. A tear in the right image is closed and backed with a patch of canvas on the reverse, some minor craquelure here and there. The work is monogrammed 'FC' and dated '78' in red lower right. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 63 x 73.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 50.5 x 60.5 cm. Fanny Churberg (1845-1892) At the age of twenty Fanny Churberg began her artistic training in Helsinki, where she was a student of Emma Gylden and Alexandra Frosterus-Saltin as well as Berndt Lindholm, who had studied at the Dusseldorf Academy and - as one of the most successful Finnish landscape painter - had a major influence on Churberg's oeuvre. In 1867 she went to Dusseldorf for the first time, where she became a student of the landscape painter Carl Ludwig. Further stays in the German city followed, during which she created works inspired by themes from her home country. Churberg did not adopt the academic style of painting but developed their own progressive style. However her innovative works were not very well received at the time. It was only in the aftermath of a retrospective in 1919 when her works found recognition and their manner of representing nature influenced future generations of Finnish artists well into the 20th century.

The critic Heinz Schöffler once said about Frank's works: 'One never tires of looking at the best of his works. Despite of being depicted in clear forms, they propose a conundrum more than they reveal. Not least, that's the feature that makes Frank's works so pleasant. They make us happy.' The art historian Rainer Zimmermann coined the term of 'expressive realism', which described some of them. The artists of the 'lost generation', in fact, had no unified style, but worked both in the expressive and realistic, as well as in the representational and abstract manner. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, 1904 Alexander Frenz (1861-1941) - German artist of the Düsseldorf School of Painting Signed and dated lower right 'A. Frenz 1904' Arcadian landscape composition with tempietto in broad opulent golden frame Overall dimensions framed: 108.5 x 83 cm Good condition The idealized symbolic landscapes and nudes by Alexander Frenz are particularly popular with collectors, his paintings fetch up to 18,000 Euros at international auctions This oil painting was created by the artist Alexander Frenz in 1904. Frenz was an artist of the Düsseldorf School of Painting and focused mostly on landscapes. Study trips to Rome, Naples and Capri inspired him of ancient themes as it appears in our painting as well. A young shepherdess has settled on a hill in a seemingly unreal Arcadian landscape, through which a narrow stream flows into a deep canyon that opens up on the left side of the image. A tempietto, which is reached via a long meandering staircase, appears on the hill in the background of the painting. Characteristic for Frenz' images is the symbolic design and use of bright colors in contrast with darker tones as well as the soft running lines of the Art Nouveau that are expressed here especially in the depiction of the cypress trees. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'A. Frenz 1904' and is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear such as framing marks on the edges. The frame shows few traces of use as well. Verso the stretcher bears an old label of the previous owner and measures 90 x 65 cm. The framed dimensions are 108.5 x 83 cm. Alexander Frenz (1861-1941) Alexander Frenz was born 1861 in Rheydt. In 1879 he began to study at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art with a focus on landscape painting, but also illustration and etching. After a short stay at the Munich Academy, studying under Franz von Lenbach, he returned to Düsseldorf where he, influenced by the famous symbolist painters Arnold Böcklin and Franz von Stuck, painted seemingly fantastic scenes from the realm of fable and allegory as well as symbolic images. These also illustrate the influences of the antiquity Frenz studied during his trips through Rome, Naples or Capri. His paintings soon became very popular not only among local art critics and audiences, but also beyond the borders of the Rhine country and eventually made him a well-known and successful artist. Description: Oil on canvas Denmark, around 1940/50 Oluf Høst (1884-1966) - Danish expressionist painter Monogrammed lower left 'OH' and inscribed 'BB' ('Bognemark, Bornholm'). Verso signed and inscribed on the back of the canvas 'Oluf Høst Fra Gården ved Bognemark Gudhjem Bornholm' Golden frame Overall dimensions, framed: 54 x 88 cm Very good condition Provenance: Swedish-Swiss Private Collection The views of the Bognemark farm are characteristic for Oluf Høst's oeuvre and are amongst his most popular motifs; paintings of comparable size depicting views of Bognemark fetch up to 35,000 Euros at international auctions The Danish painter Oluf Høst created this painting with a view of his farm Bognemark near Gudhjem on the island Bornholm during the 1940s or 1950s. Bognemark is one of the main subjects in Høst's oeuvre; he has painted various views of the farm from all possible angles, at different daytimes and seasons. In the left half the painting shows a farm building in somber colours. The right half shows another, light-coloured building depicted in a sketch-like manner. Human silhouettes in a reddish brown can be seen in the yard between and in front of the buildings, also rather resembling motion studies than depictions of real persons. The contrast between the lighter and darker halves of the canvas is held together by the connecting green colour fields of the trees. Unusual is the yellow sky, which the artist has spanned over the scene and that creates an almost surreal atmosphere. He received his education at the academy in Copenhagen between 1906 and 1915 and at the same time studied at Harald Giersing's school where Karl Isakson introduced him to the works of the late French Impressionists Van Gogh and Cézanne. From 1929 onwards, the artist has lived on the island of Bornholm with his family; he focused on painting the typical island buildings and many views of the village of Gudhjem and his farm Bognemark. During the 1930s, Oluf Høst got more and more recognition for his work as an artist; he won the Eckersberg Medal in 1933, the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1943 and several others. His former home in Gudhjem is now the Oluf Høst Museum. The portrait exhibits the artist's quintessentially expressive style; the body and face are rendered with powerful broad brushstrokes with dark outlines. The partly nude torso, painted in red and orange, stands out against the indistinct background in muted shades of blue, gray and green. The linearity of the composition as well as the intense use of color create an insistent effect of vigorous intimacy.
