Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Prunella Clough (1919-1999) Fisherman with Weighing Scale watercolour and ink monotype, circa 1949, signed in pencil. on wove paper, with full margins, 365 x 430 mm (14 3/8 x 17 in) From the late 40's to the early 60's Clough's focus was on the working man in an industrial setting, and within this, theme that she returned to regularly was that of the fisherman. Clough would often frequent the ports of London and of East Anglia to draw inspiration for the works that she then produced in her London studio. Referring to these pictures Clough suggested retrospectively that they were "an attempt to introduce the figure into a contemporary urban landscape without the devices of the past, without the myths of Mars or Venus or the legends of Breughel. I was trying to update the classical Western concern with the figure without benefit of religious or mythical context" IMPORTANT: This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions. IMPORTANT: This lot is subject to VAT and the buyer must pay VAT on both the hammer and the buyer's premium at a rate of 20%

Lot 34: Ursula Fookes (1906-1991) Liner the very rare

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Ursula Fookes (1906-1991) Liner the very rare linocut printed in colours, signed and numbered 6/50 in pencil verso, on tissue-thin laid Japan paper, with full margins, 140 x 140 mm (5 1/2 x 5 1/2 in) Whilst this work is numbered from an edition of 50, there are only 3 known impressions, of those this is the only copy which is signed by the artist. It has been suggested that the linocut represents the RMS Titanic. Whilst it is impossible to state definitively, one of the key features of that ill-fated liner gives credence to the theory - the Titanic was one of only fifteen four funnel ocean liners ever built, and of these fifteen, seven were of a design that does not fit with that of the present work. Of the remaining eight the Titanic was undoubtedly the most famous, not only amongst this small number of four stackers, but also as it is undoubtedly the most famous ocean liner of all time.
