Where Waters Run Cold by Martin Grelle

Lot 7S: Where Waters Run Cold by Martin Grelle

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Where Waters Run Cold by Martin Grelle - Edition Size: 150 - Giclee on Canvas - Signed & Numbered Dimensions: 32 x 24 Release Date: 9-2012 ???.Whether painting the Native Americans in a dramatic, picturesque setting, or the American cowboy in the dusty cattle-working pens, Martin Grelle captures the spirit, beauty, and vastness of the West in his historically-accurate, compelling images. Grelle studies diligently to portray the diverse cultures of the American West accurately and with sensitivity. His knowledge of the cowboy?s way of life, gained from his time spent horseback on ranches during the annual Cowboy Artists of America?s (CAA) trail ride, as well as the time spent with local ranchers and friends, is evident in his contemporary cowboy paintings. The many hours spent in museums, at historical re-enactments, in visiting with experts on Native American culture, and reading from his extensive library, have helped him to bring his vision of the Plains Indian culture to life on canvas. Grelle was born when his family lived on a small farm a few miles from the small, Central Texas town of Clifton, which he still calls home today. This beautiful and historic area has become a mecca for artists, including many of Grelle?s close friends. They all enjoy getting together to "talk art?, critique each other?s work, and exchange ideas. Many of them, including Grelle, teach annual workshops through a local art facility known as the Bosque Conservatory, which has begun to have a national presence. Grelle treasures this feeling of community and the opportunities he is afforded living in such a creative environment. The artist?s talents were evident as a child and he began painting at an early age. Luckily for the budding painter, acclaimed Western artists James Boren and Melvin Warren had settled in the same area while he was in school. With excellent guidance from James Boren, a full-time artist was born in his early twenties. Since then, Grelle has studied and traveled widely to seek subject matter for his work. Working primarily in oils on canvas, the artist?s figures and landscape become one in a painterly style rich in vibrant color and narrative. For more than 30 years Grelle has made a career of his art, and has won awards of both regional and national importance. In 1995, he was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America, and he is one of the younger active members. He is currently serving his second term on the board of directors for that organization, and participates in the Annual CAA Exhibition and Sale at the Phoenix Art Museum each October. Grelle won the CAA People?s Choice Award in 2002, for his painting Monarchs of the North, and the Ray Swanson Memorial Award in 2008, for his painting Newlyweds. He has also been privileged to participate in other major juried shows across the United States. Included in that list are the Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition and Sale at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, which he has participated in each year since 1995, the Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition & Sale at the Autry National Center, and the inaugural Quest for the West Exhibition & Sale at the Eiteljorg Museum. Awards of merit include the Prix de West Purchase Award, which he won in 2002 for his painting Teller of Tales, and again in 2005, for his painting Two Coups, making him one of only 6 artists to have won the top award twice. Grelle has also won twice the Nona Jean Hulsey Ramsey Buyer?s Choice Award at Prix de West, first in 2004 with Signs Along the Snake, and again in 2006, for Dust in the Distance. The artist is represented by Overland Gallery of Fine Art, in Scottsdale, Arizona, where a one-man show is held for Grelle each March. The 2008 show marked Grelle?s 20th anniversary one-man show with the gallery. The artist has been profiled in a number of publications, including the magazines Art of the West, Western Art Collector, Southwest Art, Western Art & Architecture, Persimmon Hill, American Cowboy, Western Horseman, Wild West, and InformArt. His work has also been showcased on the covers of many of these publications. Grelle says humbly, "I thank God for the ability and the opportunities He has given me, and I hope I can continue to grow and learn more with each finished painting. I am honored by everyone who collects my work, and I will always strive to create artwork worthy of their attention, and their investment.?

Me and My Shadow by Susan Blackwood

Lot 9S: Me and My Shadow by Susan Blackwood

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Me and My Shadow by Susan Blackwood - Edition Size: Open - Giclee on Canvas, Open Edition Signed Dimensions: 12 x 12 Release Date: 6-2011 ???.Pakistan 1975: in the midst of a clambering market place, unable to speak the language...I became aware of the importance of the common bonds that universally unite us all. The necessity to communicate these visions, feelings and emotions became paramount. Art became my language. I have chosen as my subject matter the simple, beautiful touching moments that are common both in nature and in the life of every person. These are the moments that often pass without notice and are the very ones that lend continuity to our lives and contribute to its richness and depth. These moments are the language I use when I paint. As in any meaningful conversation, the structure of the message must be clear. Thus, my color, brush strokes, textures and composition are carefully chosen, like essential words, to convey to the viewer the message that I wish to impart. My studies of classical art techniques began when I was a child and will always continue as I strive for better clarity and higher achievement. As words are carefully chosen for a poem, I, too, limit my brush strokes and detail to relay just enough to give the viewer my thoughts and involve their imagination. I purposely leave areas of my paintings in mystery for the viewer to become engaged in the story. I strive for each painting to be a poem rather than a novel. Some of my loose paintings are like haiku poems that are simple impressionistic vignettes. While some of my paintings are like sonnets, more spelled out in detail. Through the medium that I have chosen, I strive continually to develop a rich and colorful dialog in a language that will reach the heart. Susan won Best of Show 2010 at the American Women Artists National Exhibition held in Dallas.

Giving Way to Spring Scipio by Bruce Cheever

Lot 14S: Giving Way to Spring Scipio by Bruce Cheever

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Giving Way to Spring Scipio by Bruce Cheever - Edition Size: 15 - Giclee on Canvas - Artist Proof Dimensions: 17 x 30 Release Date: 3-2011 ???.Bruce Cheever remembers his interest in art started as a child. His natural, artistic talent led him to enjoy success as an illustrator for many years, eventually leading to a career as a fine artist. During his years spent in illustration, he gained much knowledge, along with an ability of observation and discipline in the arts. He also credits his education at BrighamYoung University as a positive influence in his success. In this formative period of his career, he also discovered an affinity for tonalism and luminism. The artist?s atmospheric and bucolic paintings are suggestive of Renaissance landscapes. This passion for the landscape is driven by the never-ending search for beauty. Cheever states, "Art is a visual language and, as an artist, my hope is that my work is not just paint on a board, but rather a combination of inspiration, emotion, and skill to inspire the human soul. As primarily a landscape painter, I strive to evoke emotion in the spirit of those who view my work and to give them a sense of place within the landscape. My hope is that I can touch the chords of nostalgia and beauty that lie within each of us, and further hope to inspire others to pay attention to the simple beauties of life.? Today, Cheever?s studio paintings take shape from the inspiration he gathers from his travels. Whether painting a rural scene in the American West or a pastoral European landscape, his art is emerging with a style of its own. The artist adds, "My objective is to inspire others through art and to participate in reminding mankind that the world can be good if we consciously take the time to appreciate what is around us. I am inspired by the ordinary and moved by the extraordinary and feel that both are equal in beauty, if careful attention is given to both. I thank God for His gifts to me and the ability to share them with others. I simply believe that we are all given glimpses of divinity to sooth our souls, and that each of us is given gifts to share with one another.? Cheever is represented by Trailside Galleries in their Jackson and Scottsdale locations. He exhibits at many invitational shows, including showcases with Trailside Galleries, and he also participates in group shows with Settlers West Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, and Howard Mandville Gallery in Kirkland, Washington. He has exhibited at the prestigious Masters of the American West Show at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, at the Jackson Hole Art Auction, and at the Arts for the Parks, where he is one of the top 100 winners. His work has been featured in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Western Art Collector, and American Art Collector magazines.

Buffalo Valley by Nancy Glazier

Lot 15S: Buffalo Valley by Nancy Glazier

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Buffalo Valley by Nancy Glazier - Edition Size: 35 - Giclee on Canvas - Grande Edition Dimensions: 25 x 45.5 Release Date: 8-2009 ???.Nancy Glazier is passionate about her art and the subject of her art. This passion is evident in the way she paints and the way she lives ? they are inseparable. Surrounded by mountain beauty and the animals the artist loves to paint, Glazier says, ?I feel a kinship with the animal that grows as the painting progresses. There is a powerful chemistry at work. People ask me, ?Which is your favorite animal to paint?? I can tell you it is always the very animal I am painting at the time." For Glazier, it is ??a warm, living, breathing process that brings me back again and again to the easel. It is my ultimate reward.? Many of the artist?s admirers and collectors consider Glazier to be an extraordinary artist whose paintings seem ?alive.? For her, this is warm praise, because she desires to share what she experiences through her paintings. She hopes the viewer, too, will feel the warmth of the sun or the crisp chill of winter, smell the sage and dust, or hear the bellow of the bison. Glazier knew she wanted to be an artist from early childhood. In her teens, she lived in Wyoming where she immersed herself in the rugged, western terrain. There she was mentored and taught by artist Adolph Spohr, who gave her private instruction and taught her how a professional uses paint and brush?how to observe and self-correct. The artist?s style evolved over time. After seeing a dramatic photograph of a grizzly, she was awakened to a desire to paint animals ?close up and hair-by-hair.? The artist has taken hands-on anatomy classes that enable her to paint an amazingly accurate portrait of an animal from its bone structure to muscles to hair, bringing it life on her canvas. The artist enjoys much success as one of today?s most talented wildlife painters. Her original works are represented by one of America?s leading galleries. Her paintings have been featured at prestigious shows throughout the country, and two of her works hang in the Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City. Glazier and her husband reside in an idyllic setting in Nevada where a spacious studio allows her to create her extraordinary paintings and continue her journey of discovery to capture ?the whole picture.?

Baby Blues by June Dudley

Lot 30S: Baby Blues by June Dudley

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Baby Blues by June Dudley - Edition Size: Open - Giclee on Canvas, Open Edition Dimensions: 15 x 12 Release Date: 1-2013 ???.June Dudley grew up in the country near the small town of Iola, Texas, in an area known locally as the river bottom, a place where she has cherished memories of family and rural values?.where the Western attitude and ranching were lived everyday. Cowboy lore was not just stories for the artist, but everyday life for her family. Her father worked cattle, and it was not unusual for Dudley and her sister to ride horses all day working as "cowhands? on the range. A love of the land comes naturally, and today she owns the ranch that has been in her family for over 100 years and is recognized by the State of Texas. Dudley cherishes the times she worked with her father on the ranch, which also gave her an appreciation of the Western way of life. Dudley began painting at the early age of around eight. With no canvases to be had at the time, the budding artist used cardboard. Her earliest inspiration came from visits with an aunt who painted. The little artist was fascinated by the brushes and paints displayed in her aunt?s home and longed for her own. When her wish was granted, it was a dream-come-true for the little girl who knew she would one day become an artist. As a student of the late, great Western landscape painter, Bob Wygant, Dudley so admires his style and considers him to be the major influence in her love of painting the Western way of life. The artist continually photographs and sketches her subject matter and paints in acrylics. Weather permitting, Dudley delights in plein air painting; however, she creates most of her works in her home studio that affords a great north light. Painting the world she has always known, Dudley says, "I guess I paint what I am.? With a combination of impressionism and realism, the artist?s favorite subjects have become landscapes. Using a colorful palette that brings the viewer into her scenes, Dudley also favors figurative pieces that often include her grandchildren, other family members, and close friends. Garden scenes are prominent in her works having observed her mother grow beautiful flowers for as long as she can remember. Dudley?s works are represented by various galleries in Texas, among them The Midland Gallery in Midland, the Fredericksburg Art Gallery in Fredericksburg, and the L Bar Gallery in Kerrville. The artist has exhibited at shows across the nation in Houston, at the Peppertree Show in California, the Mountain Oyster Show, the Best of the West in Arizona, and at the Governor?s Invitational for Cheyenne Frontier Days. Dudley?s work has been featured in various publications such as Art of the West and Country Lifestyle magazines, and several newspapers. Dudley?s image, "Boss Lady,? was the cover art for the 2007 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo School Art Program Awards Presentation booklet. Come to the country and enjoy the people and places that are dear to this rancher?s daughter ? Dudley captures her Texas family legacy with images that come from the bottom of this very talented artist?s heart.

Smoky Mountain Grandeur - Mt. LeConte by Phillip Philbeck

Lot 40S: Smoky Mountain Grandeur - Mt. LeConte by Phillip Philbeck

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Smoky Mountain Grandeur - Mt. LeConte by Phillip Philbeck - Edition Size: 25 - Giclee on Canvas - Artist Proof Dimensions: 24 x 48 Release Date: 11-2012 ???.North Carolina is the home of renowned landscape painter Phillip Philbeck. His subjects, mountains, rolling piedmont, and coastal views, hold great appeal with magnificent vistas, wide sandy shores, wonderful spring and fall foliage. Born in Washington, D.C., but a resident since very early childhood and presently living in rural Rutherford County, the artist enjoys the surroundings in which he grew up and is inspired to paint its farms, streams, ponds, coast or anything to which he feels an emotional attachment.Painting from his comfortable studio in his home, the artist only has to venture outside to find inspiration for his next landscape. Philbeck?s canvases reveal his immense talent in a profusion of details, and he is especially known for the skies in his images."The sky sets the basic tone for my landscapes,? states the artist.Textures, shapes, and contrasts derived from many of nature?s wonders are painted in vibrant colors; with interesting juxtaposition, the artist bathes his scenes in a dramatic light and atmosphere.Although Philbeck very much admires realism, he has a tendency toward the romantic, emotional types of images such as the Hudson River School brought forth. Growing up, the artist drew and painted whenever he could. With a heritage of an artistic and creative family, Philbeck?s father, who also painted, encouraged his son and nurtured the budding artist?s talents.Although basically self-taught, young Philbeck attended college where he was mentored by instructors who saw a passion and talent that they encouraged the artist to pursue. At the age of only 24, Philbeck began publishing limited edition prints, with many releases having sold out. Philbeck has a natural attraction to familiar places and things. He recalls fondly exploring the wooded landscapes of neighboring hills and mountains of his childhood, and he puts these many memories on his canvases. The artist?s greatest enjoyment comes from knowing that viewers can relate to his paintings or be taken back to a time when nature was a new, awe-inspiring adventure. When he is not painting, Philbeck enjoys constructing his own stretchers for his canvases and also possesses the talent to create frames for some of his paintings. The artist sometimes enjoys relaxing moments creating music with his guitar. Join Phillip Philbeck in appreciating all that nature offers.Come to the mountains and piedmont and enjoy the spring and the fall. Take in the glorious coastlines. And all other times when the landscape blooms anew or when the fall colors take your breath away or the smell the salt air brought by gentle breezes from the ocean.Take in the beautiful landscapes created by this very talented artist.
