WW2 Royal Air Force Immediate Distinguished Flying Cross & Log Books of Flight Lieutenant Stanley A Windmill 158 Squadron RAFVR, Decorated for Gallantry on Operation over Trappes when he skilfully evaded an attack by German night fighter, allowing his air gunners to shoot the aircraft down, also took part in the disastrous raid on Nuremburg in March 1944

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WW2 Royal Air Force Immediate Distinguished Flying Cross & Log Books of Flight Lieutenant Stanley A Windmill 158 Squadron RAFVR, Decorated for Gallantry on Operation over Trappes when he skilfully evaded an attack by German night fighter, allowing his air gunners to shoot the aircraft down, also took part in the disastrous raid on Nuremburg in March 1944, single George VI Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C) on original ribbon professionally framed along with his original named Buckingham Palace forwarding slip. Accompanied by three of his original Pilots Flying Log books covering his period of service from January 1942 to June 1945. The logs cover his initial training in the UK, USA and then his operational tours with 158 Squadron detailing many missions over occupied Europe and Germany. Also two original photographs of Windmill and his crew, these are in poor condition but two copies have been made and framed, the book “The Bombing of Nuremberg” by James Campbell, pair of US Airforce pilots wings and a RAF gilt and enamel sweetheart brooch in the form of a pair of pilots wings. **Accompanying the group is a print out from a magazine which had an article written by Flight Lieutenant Windmill’s son which gives details of his fathers career, “Stan Windmill, my father joined the London Metropolitan Police in 1937 at the age of 20, and met my mother while on point duty at the London Docks where she worked as a clerk. On the outbreak of war, despite being in a reserved occupation, he made a number of requests to be allowed to do his bit in the war effort. After several attempts he was able to join the Royal Air Force as a reservist”. He goes on to describe his training in England and then in the USA at various airfields. He then goes on to describe his father’s operational career with 158 Squadron, “During his operational career, he flew two tours of duty, completing in excess of 40 raids on major targets throughout Germany, including Aachen, Dusseldorf and Manheim. He also took part in the notorious 1000 bomber raid on Nuremburg in March 1944. In fact only some 796 aircraft took part in this raid which proved to be a disaster. This was mainly due to the fact that the weather forecast was completely wrong, with clear moonlit skies instead on the predicted heavy cloud. This allowed the German night fighters to have a field day, shooting down 95 of the allied bombers. The toll in destroyed aircraft equated to an 11% loss, one of the worst percentages of the war. The raid was also branded a failure because many of the crews did not reach the target area, and released their bomb loads onto non-targets. Photo reconnaissance of the intended targets showed little to no damage”. ** He goes onto state that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross was for this raid, however the award appeared in the London Gazette on 19th September 1944 and the citation is as follows, “One night in June 1944, this officer piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Trappes. During the operation the aircraft was attacked by a fighter at close range. By a clever manoeuver, Flight Lieutenant Windmill evaded the attacker but a short time afterwards the enemy aircraft again came in. Once again Flight Lieutenant Windmill responded well to the directions of his gunners and obtained a position from which they delivered effective fire and shot the enemy aircraft down. In this spirited action, Flight Lieutenant Windmill displayed great skill, coolness and co-operation. He has participated in a large number of sorties during which he has attacked a wide range of targets.” ** This lot is being sold on behalf of the International Bomber Command Centre and was donated by the family of Flight Lieutenant Windmill. Please note we have not removed the Distinguished Flying Cross from the frame so is being sold as viewed.

WW2 Battle of Kohima Military Medal (MM)

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WW2 Battle of Kohima Military Medal (MM), George VI example awarded to “2322107 SJT R W SANGER R SIGNALS”. Medal is housed in the original forwarding box with Buckingham Palace forwarding letter. Some letters in the regiment have been corrected to the medal but otherwise very good condition. The MM appeared in the London Gazette 28th June 1945 and the recommendation is as follows, “Between 19 April 1944 and 20 June 1944, this N.C.O. showed consistent devotion to duty and disregard of danger in his eagerness to establish line communications in the Kohima area. His cheerful bearing during long periods of very hard work was a constant inspiration to his detachment and he never allowed enemy action to interfere with the job in hand. In particular on 9 May 1944, he laid a line to the 4 Inf. Bde. up a mule track on which he well knew Jap. patrols were active. The line was cut by the enemy and he had to be restrained by an officer from going out alone to attempt repair. Again on 26, 27 and 28 May 1944 whilst attached to 6 Inf. Bde. for the ascent and attack on Aradura Spur he exceeded his orders and laid beyond Bde. H.Q., through the leading battalion and to the 143 S.S. Coy. who were the leading troops. He was specially recommended for his work on this occasion to me by C.O., 1 R.Berks. who was shortly afterwards evacuated wounded. Generally a great deal of his work was done under fire and he constantly laid lines through territory in which it was known enemy parties were operating.”
