TILDEN WILLIAM: (1893-1953) American Tennis

Lot 2: TILDEN WILLIAM: (1893-1953) American Tennis

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: TILDEN WILLIAM: (1893-1953) American Tennis Player, Wimbledon Champion 1920, 1921 & 1930. A.L.S., Bill, one page, slim 4to, Memphis, Tennessee, n.d. (11th June 1948?), to his protégé Arthur Anderson ('Dearest Stinky'), on the attractive printed stationery of the Hotel Peabody. Tilden sends his friend a cheque (no longer present) 'to cover your reservation & ticket to Boston from Chicago' and provides details of the hotel and where to meet in Boston, concluding 'Crazy to see you'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Tilden. A boldly penned letter. VG The present letter is written at a controversial time in Tilden's life; in November 1946 he was arrested and later sentenced to one year in prison for "contributing to the delinquency of a minor," when police found him obviously engaged in sexual activity with a 14-year-old boy. In 1949 he was again arrested in similar circumstances and again confined in prison. Released, broke, and shunned, he barely earned a living by scarce teaching assignments. His last protégé, Arthur Anderson, to whom the present letter is written, and Anderson's mother Marrion Anderson, however, still befriended him. When Tilden failed to keep a dinner invitation at the Andersons, Arthur investigated and found Tilden dead from heart disease in his small Hollywood apartment.

Prince Andrew thanks his correspondent for their thoughtfulness and kindness during the Ryder Cup, remarking 'The players and their respective associations owe you a huge debt. Not only was the Course in immaculate condition but it remained in such remarkable shape throughout, despite the ravages of the weather. I am sure that everyone who was lucky enough to be at Valderrama for the Ryder Cup - both players and spectators alike - wish to pay tribute to your tireless efforts, great skill and ceaseless hard work. It was a tremendous week.' He continues 'The golf was exceptional and I enjoyed my two rounds at San Roque before the Opening Ceremony, especially the 18 holes with President Bush. Bush enthusiastically thanks his correspondent for the hospitality shown during his visit to the Ryder Cup, 'You treated us like royalty....you saw to every detail having to do not only with our comfort but also with our enjoyment of the matches. In sum - PERFECTION!'. He continues, 'We loved meeting Prince Bernhard. What a marvelous man. I hope when I reach his age I will have not only his health and his energy but that same sense of joie de vivre. He has a twinkle in his eye that lights up the room' before adding 'I also thought that the Duke of York actually relaxed and enjoyed himself. I know that both Barbara and I enjoyed getting to know him. He loved the golf and it was good seeing him out there on the course - causing no fuss, cheering on the European team. He has a nice sense of humor, and, of course, Barbara loved teasing him. Has anyone ever done that before to his Royal Highness? I do disagree with him on one thing. I heard him say that Tony was a bit offenseive - Tony the VIP dining room man. Not so in my book. Tony, indeed his entire crew, were wonderful to the Bushes in every way save one. The "one" being that they fed us too well.' Accompanied by a draft copy of a fax reply sent to Bush by Jaime Ortiz-Patino, one page, 4to, Sotogrande, 23rd October 1997. Together with a signed and inscribed colour 7.5 x 10 photograph of Bush in a head and shoulders pose wearing a Valderrama Golf Club cap. Signed by Bush to the head of the image, with an inscription to Valderrama Golf Club. The signature and inscription are extremely faded and only barely legible.
