Viewing Notes:
The auction preview is from April 2nd through and including April 13th online at both Invaluable and AuctionZip. In-house previews are by appointment. Previews are not available day of sale.
Sale Notes:
Stanford Auctioneers is the largest Fine Art & Photographs auction house in 10 of the 11 Western States (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington), California being the exception. Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, we hold approximately 16 regularly scheduled auctions each year. We focus on traditional fine art and photography. Fine Art auctions generally consist of Old Master to Contemporary work, from the 15th to the 21st centuries, with an emphasis on 19th and 20th century material. We sell paintings, drawings, sculpture, fine prints, vintage and fine art posters, and many other types of fine art. Photographic items range from the earliest created images through the very recent. An important category in the Fine Art sales is Latin American material, with a sub-category in Mexican Folk Art. Our "traditional type" auctions afford bidders the ability to bid on the floor, by absentee bid (left with us or on-line), telephone bidding, and live on-line Internet bidding. We have world-wide bidders, from Iceland to South Africa, Chile to Canada. All auction lots are available for viewing by appointment prior to each auction. Payments by winning bidders can be made by cash (day of sale only), check, credit/debit card (Visa/MC), or wire transfer. We ship world-wide, have an experienced in-house shipping department, and are happy to ship most items for you. If the lots you purchase are very large, we may refer you to a local shipper. We welcome consignments. Please email us at info@StanfordAuctioneers.com if you have items in which you think we might have an interest. If you wish to be added to our mailing list, please email us at info@StanfordAuctioneers.com. Your email address is held strictly confidential. You can, of course, opt-out at any time. For more information, including our auction calendar and upcoming events, please visit our web site, email us at info@stanfordauctioneers.com, or feel free to call us at 602-266-8482.

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT & ANDY WARHOL - Color offset lithograph

Lot 707: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT & ANDY WARHOL - Color offset lithograph

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jean-Michel Basquiat & Andy Warhol (Americans, 20th Century). "Warhol * Basquiat Paintings [second printing]". Color offset lithograph. 1999. Edition unknown. Smooth white wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Fine condition. The legendary, iconic, and famous poster of two of the greatest artists of the latter part of the 20th Century, perhaps the most poignant and enduring image of the 1980's NYC art scene. The poster was reissued by Tony Shafrazi in 1999. The image is by Michael Halsband. The show displayed the collaborative paintings that Warhol and Basquiat worked on from 1984-1985. These works were the culmination of their friendship, one which began in the late 70's. Eventually, the two began work on the paintings that would constitute the bulk of this exhibition. But the process was not without conflict. Warhol, whose work ethic was legendary, grew frustrated with Basquiat's erratic appearances and the two worked very little on the paintings at the same time. The show was a financial and critical failure and marked the end of their friendship. The full title of the poster is: Tony Shafrazi * Bruno Bischofberger Present: Warhol * Basquiat Paintings © 1999 Tony Shafrazi Gallery 119 Wooster Street New York, September 14 through October 19, 1985, 163 Mercer Street New York. Overall size: 27 1/4 x 19 1/4 in. (692 x 489 mm). Image size: 26 1/8 x 16 1/2 in. (664 x 419 mm). [27963] |600| {R100}

KEITH HARING - Original color silkscreen

Lot 709: KEITH HARING - Original color silkscreen

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Keith Haring (American, 1958 - 1990). "Crack Down! [program]". Original color silkscreen. 1986. Signed in black marker, lower center; signed and dated in the plate. Edition unknown, probably c2,000. Light cream smooth wove paper. Full margins. Fine impression with vibrant colors. Condition: fine. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Gundel/von der Osten 40 for the poster. Scarce, and rare when signed. No auction records located. The image for the program is identical to that of the image for the poster created by Haring (with the exception of the background color) at the request of the concert promoter Bill Graham. Graham revisited his old Bronx neighborhood in August of 1986 and, appalled to see that the drug culture had effectively wiped out the local culture, foresaw a menacing problem in the crack craze. He teamed with David Maldonado to stage a Crack Benefit in the city, but scaled back plans several times since few shared his apprehension. Ultimately, two concerts were held, one at Madison Square Garden on October 31st and the other, an all-Latin show at the Felt Forum, the following night. Much like theatrical playbills, programs have been used at concerts for decades. With information on bands and their members, it gives the concertgoer a chance to get to know the musicians they will soon see live. The program offered here is from the performance at the Felt Forum on November 1st, which featured Santana, Ruben Blades y Seis del Solar, Willie Colon, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, and Bobby Rodriguez y la Nueva Compania. Image copyright © The Keith Haring Foundation. Overall size: 9 x 12 1/16 in. (229 x 306 mm). Image size: 9 x 6 in. (229 x 152 mm). [28364] |250| {R100}
