Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: A. SCHINDELER Size: 49 7/8 x 37 1/4 in./126.6 x 94.6 cm Lith. Vieillemard, Paris One of the most magnificent travel posters ever created, it advertises a "Round-the-World tour by ship and railroad." The globe gives us part of the itinerary: from the right, the ship comes through the Red Sea and Mediterranean, by railway from Marseilles to Le Havre, then by ship to New York, where the railroad, shown at the bottom of the design, takes you to San Francisco either by way of Chicago or New Orleans, and then the ship again across the Pacific.

Normandie / New York. 1935

Lot 12: Normandie / New York. 1935

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 24 1/8 x 39 1/4 in./61.2 x 99.6 cm Alliance Graphique/L. Danel, Paris One of the most famous images in poster art, Cassandre's design for the Normandie is as powerful as it is magnificent. "The arrival in New York Harbor of the gigantic super-liner Normandie will inaugurate a new era of transatlantic travel. She will set new standards of luxury and speed, steadiness, comfort and safety...not merely the largest liner afloat (79,280 tons)...but in almost every respect a new kind of liner!" (Transatlantique Advertisement). And in almost every respect, this Cassandre masterpiece was a new way of selling the glamour and excitement of ocean liner travel. A deceptively simple, but impressive design with the ship towering above us, a flight of small birds at the bottom, giving the image as much scale and strength as the imposing hull itself. The classic design appeared with several variants of text at the bottom, this being the most rare.

Description: Artist: ALBERT SEBILLE (1874-1953) Size: 24 3/4 x 39 1/4 in./62.8 x 99.8 cm Imp. Crété, Paris Sebille was a successful and prolific maritime artist, many of whose paintings adorned the staterooms of French Line ships. His travel posters for the company are some of the best ever done; not least is this tremendous view overlooking New York harbor as the latest boat arrives from Plymouth. This highly unusual perspective, as well as the fanciful coloring, distinguishes this design from the majority in circulation at the time. This is the larger format.

Description: Artist: ALBERT SEBILLE (1874-1953) Size: 30 x 42 in./76.2 x 106.7 cm Maquet, Paris The Paris was not the luckiest of ships. Begun in 1914, she was obliged to vacate her slip for warship construction before she was completed. She didn't make her first voyage until 1920. Six years later she sank a tugboat in Le Havre, the incident bringing about the loss of ten lives. In 1929, her interior was ravaged by fire. In 1939, on the eve of sailing for New York, another fire broke out in her bakery. Fire crews brought it under control, but like the Normandie three years later, she was sunk by the tons of water from the pumps. This poster captures her in brash youth, steaming proudly out of New York (just visible to the lower right).

The 24,000-ton France--not to be confused with the second France, launched in 1960--was completed in 1912, making her maiden crossing in 5 days, 17 hours. She was the most luxurious French liner of her day, and the only four-stacker. During World War I she served as a hospital.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 24 3/4 x 39 3/4 in./62.8 x 101 cm Proudly displaying Cunard's two most famous ships, this poster captures the magnificent vessels in the two noted ports of call -- Cherbourg and New York. After World War II, the Cunard Line was finally able to put both the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth into service. Although the Queen Mary was christened in May of 1936, she left Great Britain in 1940 without a single passenger in order to escape the potential devastation of German bombing; her maiden voyage with paying clientele arrived in October 1946. The war decimated rival lines and left Atlantic dominance to Cunard, something they would not relinquish until air travel became popular.
