Lot 103: 10 Books "Histoire de La Restaurtion" 1831

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Histoire de La RestaurationAuthor: Jean Baptiste H.R. CapefigueVolumes: 1-10Publisher: Duf?y et VezardDate: 1831Binding: Hardcover case binding.Page decoration: Brown patternSignature: Capefigue Number of pages: 400pages estimate/bookSize: 4" L x .75" W x 6" HWeight: 4.5lbCondition: Worn edges of books. Discoloration on pages and covers. Damaged binding.History: Books in French language. Jean-Baptiste Honor? Raymond Capefigue (1801 - December 1872) was a French historian and biographer. He was born in Marseille, France. At the age of twenty he went to Paris to study law, but soon switched to journalism. He became editor of the Quotidienne, and was afterwards connected, either as editor or leading contributor, with the Temps, the Messager des Chambres, the Revolution de 1848 and other papers.During the ascendancy of the House of Bourbon, he held a post in the foreign office, to which is due the royalism of some of his newspaper articles. Indeed all Capefigue's works are influenced by his legitimist politics (King of France must be chosen according to traditional rules of succession); he believed in the Divine Right of Kings and non-resistance, and found polite words even for the profligacy of Louis XV and the worthlessness of his mistresses. He wrote biographies of Catherine de' Medici and Marie de Medici, Anne of Austria, Maria Theresa of Austria, Catherine II of Russia, Elizabeth I of England, Diana of Poitiers and Agn?s Sorel--for he delighted in passing from "queens of the right hand" to "queens of the left."His historical works, besides histories of the Jews from the fall of the Maccabees to the author's time, of the first four centuries of the Christian church, and of European diplomatists, extend over the whole range of French history. He died at Paris. The general catalogue of printed books for the Biblioth?que Nationale contains no fewer than seventy-seven works (145 volumes) published by Capefigue during forty years. Of these only the Histoire de Philipp-Auguste (4 vols., 1829) and the Histoire de la r?forme, de la ligue et du r?gne de Henri IV (8 vols., 1834-1835) perhaps deserve still to be remembered.Meta: Literature, Authors

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: London and the Environs Publisher: K. BaedekerDate: 1911Binding: Thermally activated binding/ tape bindingPage decoration: Painted page decorationSignature: UnsignedNumber of pages: 453Size: 4.5" L x 1" W x 7.4" HWeight: 10.8ozCondition: Some pages have writing. Some pages missing. Age appropriate wear.History: Karl Baedeker was born in Essen, in the Kingdom of Prussia, on November 3, 1801.After his schooling in Hagen, he left home in 1817 to study humanities in Heidelberg where he also worked for a while at the leading local bookseller J.C.B. Mohr. Military service followed, after which he moved to Berlin where he worked as an assistant at Georg Andreas Reimer, one of the leading booksellers in the city, from 1823 to 1825. He then returned home to Essen and worked with his father until 1827 when he left for Coblence (now Koblenz) to start his own bookselling and publishing business. He was still only 25. Essen was then a small town with about 4000 inhabitants and he felt that Koblenz, which was not only larger, but was also the capital of the Prussian province of the Rhine and a hub for tourism, had far more to offer. In 1832, Baedeker's firm acquired the publishing house of Franz Friedrich R?hling in Koblenz, which in 1828 had published a handbook for travellers by Professor Johannes August Klein entitled Rheinreise von Mainz bis C?ln; ein Handbuch f?r Schnellreisende (A Rhine Journey from Mainz to Cologne; A Handbook for Travellers on the Move). This book provided the seeds for Baedeker's own travel guides. After Klein died and the book went out of print, he decided to publish a new edition, incorporating some of Klein's material but also added many of his own ideas into what he thought a travel guide should offer the traveller or reader. Baedeker's ultimate aim was to free the traveller from having to look for information anywhere outside the travel guide: about routes, transport, accommodation, restaurants, tipping, sights, walks and, of course, prices. In short, the lot. While the travel guide was not something new (Baedeker emulated the style of English guide books published by John Murray, the inclusion of detailed information on routes, travel and accommodation was an innovation.Baedeker was always generous in acknowledging the part John Murray III had played in nurturing his outlook on the future development of his guides. As a bookseller in Koblenz, he had often seen tourists enter his bookshop, either carrying a red Murray guide or looking for one. At the time, John Murray III was the leader in the field, but Baedeker was about to change that. He is often referred to as the 'father of modern tourism'.In 1846, Baedeker introduced his famous 'star' ratings (for sights, attractions and lodgings) in the third edition of his Handbuch f?r Reisende durch Deutschland und den Oesterreichischen Kaiserstaat - an idea based on the Murray guides star system. This edition was also his first 'experimental' red guide. He also decided to call his travel guides 'handbooks', following the example of John Murray III. Baedeker's early guides had tan covers, but from 1856 onwards, Murray's red bindings and gilt lettering became the familiar hallmark of all Baedeker guides as well, and the content became famous for its clarity, detail and accuracy.Meta: Literature, Authors

Books- Sophocles ''Tragoediae

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Tragoediae Author: SophoclesVolumes: TwoPublisher: J. Parker et soc.Date: 1848Binding: Leather bound with gilt.Page decoration: Red tintSignature: UnsignedNumber of pages: 148 Vol 1 - 172 Vol2Size: 8" H x 5"W x 1.5" DWeight: 2.4lbCondition: Minor discoloration around edges. Cover has wear and rips.History: Written in Latin. The Greek dramatist Sophocles, born to a wealthy family at Colonus, near Athens, was admired as a boy for his personal beauty and musical skill. He served faithfully as a treasurer and general for Athens when it was expanding its empire and influence. In the dramatic contests, he defeated Aeschylus in 468 b.c. for first prize in tragedy, wrote a poem to Herodotus, and led his chorus and actors in mourning for Euripides just a few months before his own death. He wrote approximately 123 plays, of which 7 tragedies are extant, as well as a fragment of his satiric play, Ichneutae (Hunters). His plays were produced in the following order: Ajax (c.450 b.c.), Antigone (441 b.c.), Oedipus Tyrannus (c.430 b.c.), Trachiniae (c.430 b.c.), Electra (between 418 and 410 b.c.), Philoctetes (409 b.c.), and Oedipus at Colonus (posthumously in 401 b.c.). With Sophocles, Greek tragedy reached its most characteristic form. He added a third actor, made each play independent---that is, not dependent on others in a trilogy---increased the numbers of the chorus, introduced the use of scenery, shifted the focus from religious to more philosophical issues, and brought language and characters, though still majestic, nearer to everyday life. His finely delineated characters are responsible for the tragedy that befalls them, and they accept it heroically. Aristotle states that Sophocles said he portrayed people as they ought to be; Euripides, as they are. His utter command of tragic speech in the simple grandeur of his choral odes, dialogues, and monologues encourages the English reader to compare him to Shakespeare.Meta: Literature, Authors

Anders Abraham Grafstr?m was born in 1790 in Sundsvall, the son of merchant Abraham Grafstr?m and Mary Lochner. He studied at Uppsala University , where he was registered in 1809 and became MA. 1815. By Erik Gustaf Geijer was Grafstr?m 1820 Associate Professor in Swedish history, after which he taught at the Military Academy . In 1830 he was ordained, and in 1833 he was appointed lecturer in Harnosand and got a professorial title. He was appointed in 1835 to the vicar in Ume?, PhD , 1844, and rose to dean in 1849. He was member of parliament between 1840 and 1851. Grafstr?m seemed better communications in northern Sweden and was the one who got into being a regular steamboat traffic along the northern coast. Anders Abraham Grafstr?m was a member of the Swedish Academy 1839-1870, Chair 6, Academy of Music and the Academy of Agriculture . Grafstr?m was married twice, both times with the daughters of Frans Michael Franzen . He himself was father in law both Hazelius Arthur and his sister and father of Frithiof Grafstr?m .Geijer was born at Geijersg?rden, his family's estate in Rans?ter, V?rmland. He was educated at the gymnasium of Karlstad, and then attended the University of Uppsala, where he earned his Master's degree in 1806. In 1803 he had competed successfully for an historical prize offered by the Academy of Sciences at Stockholm. In 1809, he traveled in England. The year following, he became a lecturer in history at Uppsala, and in 1815 assistant to Eric Michael Fant. Succeeding Fant, Geijer was a professor of history from 1817 at Uppsala University where a statue now commemorates him. He was rector of Uppsala University during the years 1822, 1830, 1836 and 1843-1844. As a representative of the university, he was a member of the Church of Sweden clergy: 1828-30 and 1840-41. He was a member of the Swedish Academy (on seat 14) from 1824. In 1835, he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Geijer was also a noted historian, although he did not complete any one of the vast undertakings which he planned. Of the Records of Sweden (Swedish: Svea Rikes h?fder), which were to have embraced the history of his native country from mythical ages to his own times, he finished only the introductory volume. His Svenska folkets historia (3 vols., 1832-36), which was intended to form one of the series of European histories edited by Leo and Ukert, was not carried beyond the abdication of Queen Christina (1654), the reason probably being the author's conversion to liberalism in history and politics. Incomplete as they are, these works are highly regarded contributions to Swedish history. His History of the Swedes down to Charles X was translated into English by Turner, with biographical introduction (London, 1845).Geijer was entrusted the task of examining and editing the papers which Gustavus III had bequeathed to the University of Uppsala, with the stipulation that they were not to be opened for fifty years after his death. In fulfillment of his charge, Geijer arranged these papers in a work which appeared in 1843-45 under the title of Gusstaf III's efterlemnade papper, but they contained little or nothing of valueMeta: Literature, Authors

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Movie poster "Allegheny Uprising" starring Claire Trevor, John Wayne, George Sanders, Brian Donlevy, Wilfrid Lawson, Robert Barrat, John F. Hamilton, Moroni Olsen & Eddie Quillan. Lower right reads: R57-327. Size:11.25" H x 14" W Weight: Condition: Very good. Sealed behind plastic. History: Allegheny Uprising is a 1939 film produced by RKO Pictures, starring Claire Trevor and John Wayne as pioneers of early American expansion in south central Pennsylvania. Clad in buckskin and a coonskin cap (as he would be a decade later in The Fighting Kentuckian), Wayne plays real-life James Smith, an American coping with British rule in colonial America. The film is loosely based on a historical event known as the Black Boys Rebellion of 1765, after the conclusion of the French and Indian War.The film did not fare well in its initial release. The superficially similar John Ford film Drums Along the Mohawk had been released only one week prior. Retitled The First Rebel for the United Kingdom, it was banned by the Ministry of Information for placing the British, already at war against Nazi Germany, in a bad light. The supporting cast includes Brian Donlevy, George Sanders, and Chill Wills, and the movie was written by P. J. Wolfson from the 1937 novel The First Rebel by Neil H. Swanson and directed by William A. Seiter. Claire Trevor and John Wayne also headed the cast of John Ford's Stagecoach the same year, and in Allegheny Uprising Trevor is top-billed over Wayne, due to her greater name value at the time.Meta: Poster, vintage poster, movie poster, full sheet, half sheet
