Horst Antes, Paar (Blinder), 1974

Lot 605: Horst Antes, Paar (Blinder), 1974

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Verso on canvas signed, dated and titled 'Paar (Blinder) 1974 Antes' with information on materials and dedication. With his famous "Kopffüßler", Horst Antes reduces the human body to an apparently archaic minimum. As Ulrike Lehmann explains, this pictorial abbreviation serves him as a means of modulating relevance: "Antes abandons the valid proportion pattern in order to emphasize body parts which are of importance to him on a subjective level and which symbolise a function on an objective level. For him, it is not about observation but about the depiction of bodies which can convey a subjective degree of importance. So it is not the subjective human dimension but the subjective view of the dimensional ratio of the body and its functions that are of interest. A comparison by Antes may be cited here, in which he describes the extent of a tangibly diseased tooth as a dimensional ratio. Because of the pain the tooth causes, it appears much larger than usual. The size of the body parts is determined by the dimension of their intended function. This is why eyes appear twice in Antes's figures, why feet or noses are particularly large or why ears don't exist at all. Individual body parts are not brought together according to the rules of conformity but brought to mind as individual parts." (Ulrike Lehmann, Zwei Aphorismen zu Antes Bilderwelt, in: Ulrike Lehmann, Horst Antes, Druckgraphik, Farbige Blätter, Zeichnungen, Collagen und Skulpturen, Verzeichnis der Bestände Sammlung Wolf und Ursula Hermann, exhib.cat. Sprengel Museum Hannover, Hannover 1989, p.15) Aquatec on canvas Framed

Joseph Beuys, Taube unter Brücke, 1956

Lot 612: Joseph Beuys, Taube unter Brücke, 1956

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: According to the Kleve exhibition catalogue, the present work "Taube unter Brücke" is the design for a plaque celebrating the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the town twinning of Duisburg and Portsmouth in the year 1960. Beuys interpreted the given topic by placing the two towns on the left and right-hand side of the bronze in a stylised form and by connecting them with a small footbridge. As a peace symbol, the dove is positioned right in the centre below this bridge and thus epitomises the fellowship and equality of the two towns. The friendship committee rejected the design, and the sculptor Dietrich Seidl from Duisburg was commissioned instead. Walter Haberstroh lists three further bronzes (here each titled and dated "Von Land zu Land", 1960), which resemble our plaque except for a few minor differences in the execution, as well as a plaster model (cf. Walter Haberstroh, Die Ehrenmedaillen der Stadt Duisburg, in: Duisburger Forschungen, 1994, Vol. 41, p.206, ill.35 (plaster) and ill.36 and 37 (bronzes)). Furthermore, there is a bronze at Theewen's (here titled "Brücke des Friedens") as a part of a showcase from the Ludwig Rinn collection (cf. Gerhard Theewen, Joseph Beuys, Die Vitrinen, Cologne 1993, pp.55/56). In addition, a pencil drawing (dated 1959) of the motif „Brücke des Friedens" exists which F.J. van der Grinten used as a reference for a linocut which in turn served as a cover for an exhibition catalogue (cf. Hans and Franz Joseph van der Grinten (ed.), Joseph Beuys, Zeichnungen, Bilder, Plastiken, Objekte, Aktionsphotographien, exhib.cat. Kunstverein Freiburg, Schwarzes Kloster). Bronze plaque

Joseph Beuys, Untitled, 1957

Lot 613: Joseph Beuys, Untitled, 1957

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Verso on paper signed and dated 'Beuys 57' and signed and dated 'Beuys 1957' on paper support. 'Drawings are the primary visual documents for Joseph Beuys' artistic and social acts. The drawings from Joseph Beuys are autonomous, finished artworks, rarely just preliminary sketches. At the same time however they are the traces and marks which express the artist's social thoughts and acts, his view of the world and his creative process. Their sensitivity and spontaneity lead the viewer to the central thesis of the artist, to the unity of life and art, and help them to find a way into the complex and multi-layered structures of the sculptures and actions. Despite their vivid beauty, Joseph Beuys' drawings are not only aesthetic objects. They also, despite the central role of the iconography and their deep, informative essence, represent barely the outer layer of an act or an object. They are the inner experiences of the artist, heartfelt emotions which out of necessity express themselves through seemingly random materials in an intense visual form'. (Timo Vuorikosko, Vorwort, in: Heiner Bastian (ed.), Joseph Beuys Piirustuksia, Zeichnungen, exhib.cat. Städtisches Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach and Sara Hildénin Taidemuseo, Tampere, Bielefeld 1986) Stain on paper on paper support

Peter Brüning, Nr. 32, 1960

Lot 626: Peter Brüning, Nr. 32, 1960

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Signed and dated 'Brüning 60'. Verso on canvas numbered '32'. Peter Brüning's dynamic gestural compositions have become symbolic for the Informel. According to Marie-Luise Otten, his works from the year 1960 are characterised by a unique artistic level of maturity and a pictorial coherence: "While the paintings from the year 1959 are characterised by large-scale informal stylistic elements [...], the paintings from the year 1960, despite all their noticeable spontaneity, appear more elaborate and in their detailed and shortened gestures, more creative. By means of this transformed sign language, very balanced - one might even say intelligent - compositions now often develop whose constantly modified variations let the paintings of the whole year appear as a homogeneous group. The impression arises that all elements of the personal stylistic language to date, that have been achieved step by step, are reflected here and have changed in character due to the free combination with one another, and thus give rise to new constellations within the composition." (Marie-Luise Otten, Peter Brüning, Studien zu Entwicklung und Werk, Werkverzeichnis, Cologne 1988, p.148/149) Oil on canvas Framed

Lot 649: Günther Förg, Untitled, 2000

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Signed 'Förg'. Verso on canvas signed and dated 'Förg 2000'. „Günther Förg is a painter who follows his path using stringent means of reduction and concentration to achieve a state where a painting works visually through its colors, forms, and structures while it offers the additional experience of wealth of references and meanings through its background. Förg's imagery has grown out of abstract painting and minimalism and is restricted to selected forms and colors. The identity of his paintings is nor created and defined by a motif: his subject is painting and he does not give us any illusion of a visible world. In spite of a brushwork that is both laconic and brisk, his us e of color is fundamental to his work. [...] Shapes of lines, frames, bars, stripes, crosses, grids and nets have been important elements in Förg's oeuvre since his very beginnings as an artist. These shapes remind us of architecture or of architectural elements such as windows and doors, and they add structure and rhythm to his paintings. Yet the effect is not three-dimensional or illusionist. The terms of architecture are indispensable components and a frequently recurring motif in his pictorial composition."
