Oil painting

Lot 1: Oil painting "Peasant Party at the White Swan", 17th Century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Presumably Holland, 17th Century Beautiful, elegant frame Overall dimensions 100 x 110 cm This amusing oil painting shows a happy peasant group celebrating in front of a tavern. The eponymous inn covers nearly all the left side of the canvas whereas the right side opens into a wide landscape. The majority of the revelers is gathered in front of the high building of the inn; it is there, the back pipe is being played, the dances are being danced, women being seduced and beers being drunk. A lone couple can be seen dancing in the meadows in the background and even a hunter is stalking by, quite close to the celebrating party. Because of its subject and the manner of representation the painting can be attributed to the Holland of the 17υth century. Depictions of celebrating and dancing peasants have been done by many of the great artist of the Golden Age, amongst them Jan Molenaer, David Teniers and Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder. Some of them have depicted inns called The White Swan in their paintings (Molenaer and van Heemskerck), some of them back pipers (Teniers and Molenaer). Because of the individual painting style the painting cannot be attributed to either of them, but can be counted in their circle (presumably Haarlem). The painting is besides soiling in fine optical appearance, yet has several restored areas. The frame is generally in good condition but has a material loss at the upper right corner. The overall dimensions including the frame are 110 x 101 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 90 x 80 cm.

Large oil painting

Lot 2: Large oil painting "Flagellation of Christ", 18th/19th Century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Europe (Italy?), 18th/19th Century Extraordinary format Inscribed "Percusso enin pastore disperguntur oves grecis" Dimensions: 138 x 153.5 cm   This oil painting shows the flagellation of Christ. This scene is mentioned in the gospels of John, Mark and Matthew, but a detailed description cannot be found in any of them. Nevertheless, this scene has a high pictorial value and is part of the traditional religious depictions. Jesus is bound to the column of flagellation. The vehemence with which the heavily muscled torturers beat up the suffering Jesus is unusual. But the artist wanted to show the bodies in movement and he uses the figures of the torturers to both sides of Jesus to position their bodies in the exact opposite movement. He has additionally coloured them in contrasting colours. Another of them stands behind Jesus, holding his scourge like an executioner's axe high up above his head. A fourth torturer is kneeling between Jesus and the one standing to his right. A couple of Pharisees can be seen standing to the left. The painting is done in a semi-circle. Due to the painted, allegedly stony landing at the lower end of the painting, it might be assumed that it has been made for the lunette of a door where it was meant to be part of the surrounding architecture. Another person sits on the landing watching the flagellation like an outstanding spectator. The inscription cartouche in the stony landing reads "Percusso enin pastore disperguntur oves grecis". This word, first spoken by the prophet Sacharja in the Old Testament, has been said by Jesusto his disciples in the night before his betrayal "You will all fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shall strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered". The painting has been restored more than once, especially in the lower half. The canvas has been doubled and is attached to a far coarser sackcloth. Since the painting is unframed, there are a few damaged areas at the margins. A small hole can be found near the eye of the kneeling torturer. Dimensions 138 x 153.5 cm.

Three drawings of Roman Vedutae, attributed to Ph. Veit, 1820s

Lot 3: Three drawings of Roman Vedutae, attributed to Ph. Veit, 1820s

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Pencil and water colour on artist's board; ink Italy / Germany, around 1820 Attributed to Philipp Veit (1793-1877) - German painter Two are signed in the lower right "[...] VEIT" Drawings by Philipp Veits fetch up to 8.000 Euros at international auctions Partially inscribed with ink Overall dimensions each, framed: 42.5 x 52.5 cm Very good condition These three drawings have most likely been made during one of Philipp Veit's stay in Italy. The veduta are kept in this artist's style whose drawings stand out due to a certain reservation and restraint. One of the three shows the "Isola Tiberina" in almost graphic reduction. The second one depicts a very linear and strict architecture in a "Veduta di Grottaferrata" who is only animated through the ox cart in the lower left. The third piece is a rather darkly water coloured drawing and shows an impressive arcade of massive carved stone pillars. All three drawings are in very good condition. They are identically framed, with a few traces of age and wear on the frames. The two signed drawings show a slightly untypical signature written in block letters. The curve of the "P" is missing or has been carelessly written so that it resembles an "F" rather strongly. The overall dimensions each, framed, are 42.5 x 52.5 cm, the passe-partout cut-outs are 25 x 37 cm. Philipp Veit (1793-1877) Philipp Veit studied at the Academy in Dresden since 1808, where he became friends with Joseph von Eichendorff. He moved to Rome in 1815 where he joined the German romanticist group "Lukasbund". He painted several frescos, amongst them those in the Casa Bartholdy and the Villa Massimo and in some churches. He became director of the Städelsche Institut in Frankfurt in 1830 where he also painted some frescos. In 1853 he was named director of the collection of paintings in Mainz. Several of his paintings are in Frankfurt and in Mainz, but also in the Museum Folkwang and other museums.

Very fine oil portrait of an elderly gentleman, around 1820

Lot 4: Very fine oil portrait of an elderly gentleman, around 1820

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Auction announcements 23 July 2013 Lot 4: Portrait of an elderly gentleman is not dated 1826 but 1896. Oil on canvas European School, around 1820 Signed and dated lower left "Boellert 26 (?)" Framed with an exceptional frame boasting gold ornaments Overall dimensions: 76 x 63 cm Very good condition This serene painting shows an elderly gentleman, deeply absorbed in thought. The head is positioned in the middle of the upper half of the painting, with the long beard reaching down to the lower margin of the canvas. As the man is bowing his head, the view of the beholder gets caught by the fair shine on his forehead. Starting from this light point, the eye gets caught by the fine features of the gentleman's face - the bushy grey brows shadowing the half closed eyes underneath; the distinctive nose with its energetic curve emphasized by lighter colours. The rest of the face is covered by the full and at the same time fine beard. The dark colour of both the background and the outer garment makes it nearly impossible to differentiate between the two. The finely done face is thus highlighted further more. The painting stands in the tradition of the Dutch tronies, but the type also resembles portraits of St Peter. The canvas is in very good condition, so is the frame that only shows a few traces of use. The canvas has been relined. The overall dimensions of the painting measures 76 x 63 cm, the canvas measures 60 x 48 cm. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left "Boellert 26 (?)".

Lot 5: Oil painting "North African" attributed to F.X. Kosler, 19th C

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas, mounted on canvas Austria, late 19th Century Attributed to Franz Xaver Kosler (1864-1905) - Austrian orientalist and portrait painter Orientalist portraits by Franz Xaver Kosler fetch up to 52,000 Euros at international auctions Intertwined monogram lower left Frame with four gold and white patera in all four corners Overall dimensions, framed: 63 x 50.5 cm Good condition This unique portrait reveals the genius of its creator in every brush stroke. The North African man is portrayed from a very short yet respectful, observing distance. The impressive profile of the man, which is even prolonged through the boldly protruding beard, is highlighted through skillfully placed light reflexes. His long nose and high forehead are being illuminated and thus become an eye catcher for the viewer. The thick black area of the man's hair acts as a counterweight to the lighter areas and directs the viewer back to them. The white cloth in which the man is wrapped is so subtly rendered that it also does not draw any attention from the face. The background's grey-turquoise colour harmonises with the dark skin and is not at all distracting, appearing to be quiet but not still. The portrait is an outstanding, well-balanced composition and the melancholic look of the African attracts every beholder's view again and again. The painting clearly resembles those by Franz Xaver Kosler in its painting style, the exact observation and the realistic and soft colouring are very similar to these. As the entwined monogram is not a known signature by Kosler, our expert chose to only attribute the portrait to this fine Orientalist. The painting is in good condition, with few surface scratches and minor touch ups. The beautiful period frame with the exceptional four gold and white patera is in good condition with age-related traces of wear. The original canvas has been mounted to another canvas underneath. The painting is signed in the lower left with a monogram consisting of intertwined letters. The overall dimensions, framed, are 63 x 50.5 cm; the dimensions of the canvas are 52 x 40 cm. Franz Xaver Kosler (1864-1905) Kosler was born in Vienna and studied at the local academy as a pupil of Leopold Carl Müller. After his studies, he travelled to Spain, Montenegro and repeatedly to Egypt. He had several exhibitions in Kairo that made him known to a wider audience and helped him receive many more orders. Today, most of his paintings can be found in private collections primarily in England.

Lot 6: Oil painting "Sands Bay, Whitby", by Edmund John Niemann, 1870

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on artist's board England, 1870 Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876) - British landscape painter Paintings by Niemann fetch up to 38,000 Euros at international auctions Signed and dated lower right "Niemann 70" Beautifully framed Overall dimensions, framed: 42 x 56 cm Good condition This fine painting by the British artist Edmund John Niemann is characteristic of the renowned landscape artist. The clouded English sky, in shades of pink, blue and white, takes up the most part of this painting. The landscape underneath is painted in the classical colour perspective, with the rich green-brown countryside in the foreground, and the background getting a bit paler, slightly blurred and bluer. The man and girl that are resting next to the brook bed in the foreground serve as staffage figures. The colours of the girl's garment reflect those of the sky, but in a more intensified way. The silhouette of Whitby Abbey, which arises on the horizon, is painted in colours similar to those of the sky, forming a symbolic connection between the swampy, English countryside in the foreground and the whitish, cloudy sky above it. The painting is in good condition, with some minor traces of wear and visible craquelure, which appears natural due to the impasto execution of the paintwork. There are some touch ups along the edges. The carved gilt frame has minor traces of use. The painting is signed and dated lower right "Niemann 70". The overall dimensions, framed, measure 42 x 56 cm, the dimensions of the board measure 30 x 45.5 cm. Several old labels are on the back of the painting, among them one of the board's manufacturer (Winsor & Newton), one of the gallery and studio W. Boswell, as well as a handwritten label,"Niemann, Edmund John, 1813-1876, Schottisches Hochland, London, Christie's 27. - 28. Juli 1967....". Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876) Edmund John Niemann was born in London in 1813 and began working as a clerk at Lloyd's, but he decided to start a career as an artist in 1839 and settled in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, where he turned towards landscape painting, mostly painting outdoors. Between 1844 and 1872, he exhibited his paintings in a wide range of prestigious galleries, including the Royal Academy. A collection of his paintings can be found at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, 1884 Hans Fechner (1860-1931) - German interior and portrait painter Signed and dated lower left Elaborately reticulated wooden frame Overall dimensions: 73 x 63 cm Good condition This fine portrait by Hans Fechner shows a beautiful young girl in the typical Upper Bavarian garb. She wears a wide white blouse with a small quilled collar underneath her green-red Dirndl. A narrow hat, adorned with a green band, is placed on her head. Her face is framed by small, brown curls whereas the rest of her long hair is plaited and twined to a knot in her neck. Fechner shows the girl from the side so that her smiling profile with the opened mouth and the friendly, smiley eye is displayed. Her head is positioned right in the middle of the canvas and is beautifully framed through the green of the headband, the dirndl and the background in the lower parts of the painting. The white of the blouse's sleeve forms a good counterbalance to the light areas of her face. The painting is exceptionally beautifully done and equally harmonically composed. There exist many prints with drawings to this painting; some of them inscribed "Girl from Upper Bavaria". The painting is mostly in very good condition. Only on one patch in the canvas (in the white sleeve) a hole can be seen. Crazing is also noticeable. The elaborate and beautiful wooden frame is partly broken and repaired, although there is still material loss here and there. The overall dimensions including the frame are 73 x 63 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 49 x 39 cm. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left "Hans Fechner Jun. Fec. Febr. 84". He exhibited more than once at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy in Berlin and the Great Art Exhibition Berlin between 1883 and 1903. With portraits of nearly all the important people in Berlin, including Theodor Fontane, Virchow and the Emperor, he became famous during his lifetime. He suffered from an unidentified disease that ruined his eyesight around 1910/15 which forced him to end his painting. He turned towards writing and luckily became a successful author. Still, he is more known for his paintings, some of which can nowadays be seen at the Märkische Museum in Berlin, the Städtischen Galerie in Braunschweig and the collection of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

Lot 9: Oil painting "The Harvest", Munich School, early 19th C.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, early 19th century Munich School Monogrammed and inscribed lower right "I.K. München" Framed in a fine golden frame Overall dimensions 77 x 63 cm Very good condition This fine oil painting shows a pretty peasant girl standing on a field and observing the harvest festival a little further away. She is dressed in a rural garb and has wound a scarf around her head to keep her hair from falling into her face. To make work easier, she has tied up her heavy apron around her waist. While she holds her reaping hook in her right hand, she stands propped up against the handcart to her left. The yellow field in front of her is covered in sheaves, some of which are already lying on her cart. The stone ware jar and the empty picnic basket to her feet suggest that she has been working the whole day and has had her lunch on the field. Happy people are walking and dancing between the fields a little further away, celebrating the harvest festival. The horizon is set very low, only a few mountain tops and a church tower separate the fields from the sky. This gives the artist the opportunity to show off the girl's delicate features in front of a calm background. The painting is generally in a very good condition, touch-ups are visible in one area in the lower left and crazing can be seen around it. Newly mounted canvas. The beautiful wooden frame shows traces of use. The overall dimensions are 77 x 63 cm, the dimensions of the canvas are 45,5 x 41 cm. The painting is monogrammed in the lower right "I. K. München".

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Denmark, around 1900 Ernst Thorwald Groth (1847-1891) - Danish landscape painter Signed lower right "T Groth" Titled lower left "Bryrup Brakken" In a heavy golden frame with a plaque "E. T. Groth 1817-1891" Dimensions: 113.5 x 151.5 cm Very good condition This extraordinarily large landscape painting by Ernst Thorvald Groth shows the "Bryrup Brakken", the "Bryrup Hill". It is in the Silkeborg region in Danmark on the border of a river of the same name. A well rises at the foot of the hill at which a heathen temple was built which was covered by a Christian church in 1200. None of this can be seen in the painting but Groth has painted the landscape according to its mystical past. The beholder, standing on a hill, looks over a small flat meadow towards the Bryrup Brakken, the quiet river and the rolling hills behind it. Nearly half of the painting is taken up by the dramatic sky. The rising sun is still behind the hills but it won't be long before the whole landscape will be immersed in light. Until now it is only the river that mirrors the rising sun's light. The painting is done very delicately and with a huge sense for colours and composition. The painting is in good condition, so is the frame which only shows minimal traces of use. The painting is signed in the lower right "T Groth" and titled lower left "Bryrup Brakken". The overall dimensions including the frame measure 113.5 x 151.5 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 87.5 x 126 cm. Ernst Thorwald Groth (1847-1891) Groth was born the son of an apothecary. Pointillist oil painting

Lot 20: Pointillist oil painting "Canale Grande" Augusto Sartori, 1920

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Auction announcements 23 July 2013 The painting is probably not from "Augusto Sartori" but signed "A. Sartori", an italian landscape painter of the early 20th C. Oil on Canvas Italy, 1920s Augusto Sartori (1880-1957) - Italian painter Signed lower right Framed Excellent, pointillist painting style Overall dimensions 48 x 59 cm This atmospheric pointillist painting shows a view of the Canale Grande in Venice with several gondolas in the foreground and the cupola of the Marcus Dome in the back. On the pier several people are to be seen and the pastel colors instantly lighten up the beholder's mood. The painting at hand is attributed to Augusto Sartori by our expert. He is one of the unexplainable painters of Switzerland. Born at the border to Italy, he studied at the academy in Milano before he returned to his birth place. There, in the seclusion of the village life, he created paintings that are religious and mystical and portray his quiet life style. Parts of his oeuvre are the landscape paintings that are done in an equally pointillist manner as the painting at hand. The colours of the small painting as well as its timely classification also match his other paintings. It is only the blurred way he signed the "A" of his name that prevent an immediate acceptance as one of the works of the painter. But it may be assumed with great security that it belongs to his oeuvre, especially since the way he signed his surname is absolutely identical to that of all his other paintings. He also took part in more than one Venice Biennale and presumably painted this view of the Canal Grande when there. The painting is optical in very good appearance, yet shows restorations in the sky. Along the margins is some paint loss. On the backside of the canvas a patch is visible. The frame is in very good condition. The dimensions including the frame are 48 x 59 cm, the size of the canvas is 37,5 x 48 cm. In the lower right the paintng is signed "A (?) Sartori".Augusto Sartori (1880-1957) Sartori was born in 1880 in Giubiasco near Bellinzona in the Italian speaking part Switzerland. He visited the Accademia di Brera in Milano between 1895 and 1902 and learned under Giuseppe Mentessi and Cesare Tallone. After finishing his studies, he returned to his birth place where he lived a secluded life together with his sister Mary Ann. She became his most popular model and features in most of his paintings. He participated in several regional and international exhibitions but earned his living whilst working as a drawing teacher in Locarno and Bellinzona. He developed a post-symbolist style and his works are filled with symbolic content. Landscapes and portraits also form part of his oeuvre. His works have been presented at the Venice Biennale in 1920, 1922 and 1924.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on Canvas Austria, around 1930 Rolf Vollé (1901-1956) - Swiss/Austrian artist Hand signed lower left "Vollé" Inscription on reverse "Vom Ernst" Exceptional frame by "Rahmenkunst Max Knöll" (label on the back) Overall Dimensions: 35.3 x 38.5 cm Very good condition This very felicitous small oil painting is a nice example for the lyrical landscape paintings by Rolf Vollé. The old spruce on the crest is ruthlessly shaken by the wind, it right side is nearly bare-branched and it leans heavily to the left. The whole painting is kept in greenish tones, even the sky is of a light green. The small brush strokes are easy to see, especially when looking at the trees where the small, closely set strokes imitate nature's structure. The longer strokes on the crest add to the impression of the smoothly swept underground. This small painting is well done and manages to catch the atmosphere of the rough nature in the mountains. The painting is in very good condition. The especially beautiful frame shows slight signs of wear. Dimensions: 35.3 x 38.5 cm (framed), the size of the of canvas 18 x 22 cm.Rolf Vollé (1901-1956) Born in Basle, the painter of landscapes, portrays and genre scenes Rolf Vollé received his training from Anton Kolig in Vienna. Lot 26: Painting "View in the Catinaccio" by Arnold-Graboné, 1930

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982) - German landscape and marine painter Signed and dated lower right "Arnold-Graboné 30" Massive, grey-silver frame Excellent palette knife technique Overall dimensions 109 x 128,5 cm Very good condition The Rosengarten (Italien: Catinaccio) is a massif in the Dolomites in Northern Italy. A mountain full of beauty and legends - according to its saga it has originally really been a rose garden until the midget King Laurin cursed it and turned it into stone. Arnold-Graboné captures the impressive beauty of the mountain massif in his painting. An alp lies in the foreground with a path leading across it. A hut is standing to its right side, a slanted cedar to its left. Forested hill tops string together in the middle ground, opening the view onto the vast massif of the Rosengarten. Due to the use of the palette knife, Graboné manages to create the stony structure of the peaks and edges nearly three-dimensional on the canvas. Though it can be best seen on the mountain tops, the tree and the alp in the foreground also gain plasticity and depth through the palette knife application of the paint. The canvas is in very good condition with only minimal traces of framing at the margins. The extraordinary frame shows traces of use. The overall dimensions including the frame are 109 x 128.5 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 90 x 110.5 cm. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right in the typical scratched manner "Arnold-Graboné 30". Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982) Georg von Arnold, as is birth name is, was born in Munich as the son of the district president Wilhelm von Arnold. He soon began to be interested in painting but with the beginning of the First World War, Arnold got called up and served in the same regiment as Adolf Hitler. He survived the war and began studying in Stuttgart, Vienna and later in Berlin under Max Liebermann. After a short try at cubism in the Viennese "Licht-Gruppe", Arnold turned towards the more traditional and impressionistic landscape painting. In 1932 he was named professor at the academy in Zurich and later its rector. He moved to Bavaria in 1938, allegedly following a wish of his earlier comrade Hitler. He was named Chief of the Police in 1938 against his wish, but used this position to warn friends and acquaintances about house searches and arrests. Subsequently, he himself got arrested by the Gestapo in 1944. Arnold also spent some time in war imprisonment after the war, but was soon released. In 1951, he met Dwight D. Eisenhower who was stationed in Germany as Supreme Allied Commander Europe and had bought one of Arnold's paintings. Eisenhower started taking painting lessons with Arnold and later even flew in twice a week from Paris to take his lessons. Through Eisenhower, Arnold got to know Winston Churchill whom he gave lessons in his particular palette knife technique. The two men even spent two weeks of painting holidays on the Isle of Man. In the following time, Arnold's paintings had been exhibited all over the world in such locations as the White House in Washington or the Royal Palace in Tokyo. Arnold's paintings can nowadays be found in the family collections of the Kennedys and the Eisenhowers. His artist pseudonym Grabonné is a transformation of the name Gerabronn, the village where his family originally came from.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on millboard Austria, around 1930 Hedwig Wollner-Beuk (1890-1953) - Austrian painter Signed lower right "H. WOLLNER" Framed Overall dimensions: 40 x 59 cm Very good condition The painting by Hedwig Wollner-Beuk shows a small Austrian village as there are many. The squat small church with the octagonal tower with an onion-shaped roof dominates the small place that otherwise consists of a few low homesteads. Several high trees between the homesteads and the church keep the little village together compositionally. It seems like a little unity in front of the high towering mountains behind it. It seems to be autumn, as the trees on the mountains are of a red-brownish colouring and also the field in the foreground has an overripe, even grey colour. The sky above the landscape is dark blue, nearly grey, which gives the impression of a thundery autumn day. The painting is in very good condition; the millboard is a bit fringed in the corners. The beautiful stucco frame is in a good, lightly used condition. The overall dimensions measure 40 x 59 cm, the dimensions of the millboard measure 27 x 46 cm. Hedwig WOLLNER-BEUK (1890-1953) Wollner-Beuk was born in 1890 in Trevoja and received her education at the Academy in Vienna under Ludwig Michalek and Rudolf Jettmar. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on wood Germany, around 1950 Hans Bogojević (1894-1967) - Yugoslav-German painter Signed lower right "H Bogojević " Frame Excellent palette knife technique Overall dimensions: 70 x 59.5 cm Very good condition This fine mountainscape by Hans Bogojević captivates by its contrasting colours that divide the painting in three image planes. Dark brown, grey and black dominate the mountainside in the foreground only highlighted in patches by lighter green tones. On the left border and in the lower right corner stand dark green, nearly black fir trees. The center of the painting forms the light blue and white glacier in the valley in the middle ground. The grey mountain massif of the Austrian "Wilde Kaiser" towers in the background above it all. The beholder's view is guided by the dark mountainsides that open in a v-shape onto the vista on the glacier and further on onto the mountain in the center. The whole painting is done in with a palette knife which emphasizes the mountain's asperity and the fir tree's bleakness maybe even stronger than the soft strokes of a paint brush. The painting is in very good condition and shows only minimal blemishes in the paint application; minor crazing in the lower corners. The frame shows traces of use. The overall dimensions including the frame are 70 x 59.5 cm; the dimensions of the wooden panel (hardboard) are 60.5 x 50 cm. The path winds itself from the foreground of the painting further up into the middle ground until it disappears out of sight between the bushes on the brow. Two majestic grey mountains rise up behind these bushes. The sky that stretches over the mountains is grey - except for a small spot just about where the two mountains cross. Since the path is surrounded by dark and crouched bushes, its sandy colour leads the eyes of the beholder onto the figure of the maiden and from there on over the old trees to the right onto the light spot up in the sky. The whole painting is donewith a palette knife which emphasizes the mountain's asperity and the fir tree's bleakness maybe even stronger than the soft strokes of a paint brush. Oil painting

Lot 40: Oil painting "Fishing boats in the dusk" Arnold-Graboné, 1960s

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, around 1960 Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982) - German landscape and marine painter Signed "Arnold-Graboné" Elaborately and elegantly framed Very good condition Overall dimensions: 96.5 x 76.5 cm Two Fishing boats are lying in the sea in some distance from the coast with the twilight sun reflecting on the sea. It is not an unusual motive, Georg Arnold-Graboné has chosen. But the way he painted it is rather unusual: The whole painting has been done in a palette knife technique, meaning the oil paint has been applied on the canvas with a palette knife instead of a brush. Arnold-Graboné has used a large amount of colour to paint the sea, so that with every use of the pallet knife the colour has formed thicker and thinner layers thus imitating the ups and downs of the waves' movements. The whole sea seems somehow three-dimensional. The choice of colours is just as unusual for a marine painting - catching the twilight atmosphere; the sea and sky are done in yellowish and grey-violet tones. The sharp green and black of the fishing boat in the middle of the painting contrast the surrounding sea and are only briefly reflected in the water. The artist has used the same palette knife technique but with less colour to paint the sky; its structure is thus smoother and clearly different to that of the sea. Thus the horizon splits the painting in two halves, the impasto sea and the sky. The painting is signed on the lower left "Arnold-Graboné" in the artist's typical way: he scratched his name with the back of the paint brush in the still fluid colour. The painting has an authentification certificate at its back and also an article from the Süddeutsche Zeitung from 1961 about an exhibition in the Washingtoner Gallery of Arts on the occasion of Graboné's 65υth birthday. The canvas is in very good condition. The beautiful frame shows visible traces of use. The overall dimensions including the frame are 96.5 x 76.5 cm, the dimensions of the canvas are 81 x 60.5 cm. After the war he began studying in Stuttgart, Vienna and later in Berlin under Max Liebermann. After a short try at cubism in the Viennese "Licht-Gruppe", Arnold turned towards impressionistic landscape painting. In 1951 he met Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander in Germany, who bought one of Arnold's paintings. In the following time Arnold's paintings had been exhibited all over the world in such locations as the White House in Washington or the Royal Palace in Tokyo. Arnold's paintings can nowadays be found in the family collections of the Kennedys and the Eisenhowers. His artist pseudonym Graboné is a transformation of the name Gerabronn, the village where his family originally came from.
