Bradman sends his correspondent a signed photograph (still present) and explains, 'This was taken going out to practice at Lords during my last tour.' He continues 'You have asked me the question "what was my greatest moment", and naturally I take this to mean in relation to my cricketing career...The making of the world's record test score (at that time) during my 1930 trip was of course a great moment, although I have constantly stated that my innings of 254 at Lords was, technically, better. However, in retrospect, in terms of personal satisfaction on behalf of my team and the game, as well as my own part in it, I think the best moment was at Leeds in 1948 when our team won the test on the last day with a score of over 400 which had never been achieved by any other side in history. That was a performance which nobody predicted and confounded all the critics. My own part in it was substantial and this, naturally, contributed to my satisfaction.' Together with the signed 4 x 6 photograph referred to, the image depicting Bradman walking in a full length pose with his cricket bat and pads. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: AUTOGRAPHS: CAMPBELL MALCOLM: (1885-1948) British Land & Water Speed Record Holder. T.L.S., M. Campbell, two pages, South Kensington, London, 6th January 1926, to M. Beachcroft ('Dear Bro. Beachcroft') on the attractive printed stationery of Malcolm Campbell Automobiles and featuring a small illustration of the Blue Bird. Campbell thanks his correspondent for their letters and refers to some notices of Lodge meetings having gone astray in the post ('...so many letters have been lost in the past that I have had to complain very seriously to the Postmaster General...') although adding that he is making arrangements to attend a Meeting on 13th January, 'and I shall be bringing my father-in-law, Major Whittall, with me. I presume that a dinner jacket will suffice - if not, will you kindly let me know whether evening dress means full dress.' In concluding Campbell states that he has not subscribed to any charity and proposes sending a cheque for £10 'for you to devote to any charity which you think most suitable, or would it be better to forward this amount to the Worshipful Master of the Old Uppingham Lodge.' In a holograph postscript, signed with his initials MC, Campbell writes, in full, 'My Father in law has just rung me up on the telephone & told me he has seen you today. I am afraid I am a very bad mason but I never seem to get a spare moment for anything: actually by the time I get home I have worked between 11 & 12 hours a day.' A few small staple and pin holes to the left corner of each page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG

Description: AUTOGRAPHS: CAMPBELL MALCOLM: (1885-1948) British Land & Water Speed Record Holder. T.L.S., M. Campbell, one page, 4to, South Kensington, London, 8th January 1926, to M. Beachcroft ('Dear Brother Beachcroft') on the attractive printed stationery of Malcolm Campbell Automobiles and featuring a small illustration of the Blue Bird. Campbell thanks his correspondent for their letter and adds 'I am very glad that you have not formed the opinion that I am a "bad mason" ', continuing 'Things seem to be getting worse instead of better, as every night I seem to be leaving business later than ever.' Campbell further encloses a cheque (no longer present) for £10.10.0 made payable to the Masonic Hospital and Nursing Home, remarking 'I am pleased to note that even this small subscription will be a welcome contribution. I sincerely hope that this will enable W. M. How to bring the total to 100 gns. If he is unable to do this I will be prepared to assist still further, as I feel that I have so far done nothing in this connection since I have been a mason.' With a brief ink annotation in an unidentified hand and two ink date stamps, not affecting the text or signature. VG

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: AUTOGRAPHS: CAMPBELL DONALD: (1921-1967) British Car & Motorboat Racer, World Land and Water Speed Record Holder in the 1950s and 1960s. A.L.S., Donald Campbell, one page, 4to, Coniston, Lancashire, 10th August 1949, to Mr. Daniels. Campbell thanks his correspondent for some photographs 'of Blue Bird & her crew' taken by Mr. Abell, and commenting 'they were particularly appreciated as we have had little time to take any ourselves.' Campbell further remarks 'I have nothing but the highest praise for the manner, from our point of view, in which Mr. Abell conducted a task made more trying by most apalling (sic) weather conditions over a prolonged period: the cordiall (sic) relations that existed between yourselves and the team were most gratifying.' Holograph letters of Campbell are scarce and those, such as the present example, mentioning Blue Bird are desirable. Some light age wear at the edges of the folds, just affecting one letter of the signature, G Campbell began his speed record attempts in the summer of 1949, at the time of the present letter, using his father's old boat Bluebird K4. His initial attempts that summer were unsuccessful, although he did come close to raising his father's existing record. The team returned to Coniston Water, Lancashire in 1950 for further trials.
