Charles Lindburg signed US Postal cover dated sept 22 1929

Lot 2: Charles Lindburg signed US Postal cover dated sept 22 1929

Estimated Price: £750 - £1,000

Description: Charles Lindburg signed US Postal cover. A 24cm x 10.5cm cover dated sept 22 1929 and signed by Lindberg in black on the front. Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 - August 26, 1974), nicknamed Slim, Lucky Lindy, and The Lone Eagle, was an American aviator, author, inventor, explorer, and social activist. As a 25-year-old U.S. Air Mail pilot, Lindbergh emerged suddenly from virtual obscurity to instantaneous world fame as the result of his Orteig Prize-winning solo non-stop flight on May 20-21, 1927, made from Roosevelt Field in Garden City on New York's Long Island to Le Bourget Field in Paris, France, a distance of nearly 3,600 statute miles (5,800 km), in the single-seat, single-engine purpose-built Ryan monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. As a result of this flight, Lindbergh was the first person in history to be in New York one day and Paris the next. Lindbergh, a U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve officer, was also awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic exploit. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Lindbergh used his fame to promote the development of both commercial aviation and Air Mail services in the United States and the Americas. In March 1932, his infant son, Charles, Jr., was kidnapped and murdered in what was soon dubbed the "Crime of the Century". It was described by journalist H.L. Mencken, as ". . the biggest story since the resurrection." The kidnapping eventually led to the Lindbergh family's being "driven into voluntary exile" in Europe, to which they sailed in secrecy from New York under assumed names in late December 1935 to "seek a safe, secluded residence away from the tremendous public hysteria" in America. The Lindbergh's returned to the United States in April 1939. Before the United States formally entered World War II, Lindbergh had been an outspoken advocate of keeping the U.S. out of the world conflict, as had his father, Congressman Charles August Lindbergh, during World War I. Although Lindbergh was a leader in the anti-war America First movement, he nevertheless strongly supported the war effort after Pearl Harbour and flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific Theatre of World War II as a civilian consultant even though President Franklin D. Roosevelt had refused to reinstate his Army Air Corps colonel's commission that he had resigned in April 1941. In his later years, Lindbergh became a prolific prize-winning author, international explorer, inventor and environmentalist. Good condition

Orville & Wilbur Wright signature piece framed and mounted

Lot 6: Orville & Wilbur Wright signature piece framed and mounted

Estimated Price: £3,000 - £4,000

Description: Orville & Wilbur Wright signature piece framed and mounted. 3 x 2 inch irregularly cut signature piece professionally framed and mounted with b/w photo and biographical plaque. The Wright brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 - May 30, 1912), were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who are credited[ with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903. From 1905 to 1907, the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible. The brothers' fundamental breakthrough was their invention of three-axis control, which enabled the pilot to steer the aircraft effectively and to maintain its equilibrium. This method became and remains standard on fixed-wing aircraft of all kinds. From the beginning of their aeronautical work, the Wright brothers focused on developing a reliable method of pilot control as the key to solving "the flying problem". This approach differed significantly from other experimenters of the time who put more emphasis on developing powerful engines. Using a small homebuilt wind tunnel, the Wrights also collected more accurate data than any before, enabling them to design and build wings and propellers that were more efficient than any before. Their first U.S. patent, 821,393, did not claim invention of a flying machine, but rather, the invention of a system of aerodynamic control that manipulated a flying machine's surfaces. They gained the mechanical skills essential for their success by working for years in their shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. Their work with bicycles in particular influenced their belief that an unstable vehicle like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice. From 1900 until their first powered flights in late 1903, they conducted extensive glider tests that also developed their skills as pilots. Their bicycle shop employee Charlie Taylor became an important part of the team, building their first airplane engine in close collaboration with the brothers. Good condition

Model first came to Hitler's attention before World War II, but their relationship did not become especially close until 1942. His tenacious style of fighting and aggressive personality won him plaudits from Hitler, who considered him one of his best field commanders and repeatedly tasked him with retrieving desperate situations. However, their relationship had broken down by the end of the war after Model was defeated at the Battle of the Bulge. Good condition.

Luftwaffe Hans Rossbach signed collection. We have

Lot 29: Luftwaffe Hans Rossbach signed collection. We have

Estimated Price: £5,000 - £7,000

Description: Luftwaffe Hans Rossbach signed collection. We have just acquired a complete set of the Hans Rossbach Luftwaffe aces collection. This is quite a incredible set of covers with over 270 signature of top Luftwaffe VIP's. It would be a great shame to break up these wonderful collectors items so we would like to sell it complete. It took Hans over three years to assemble back in the 1970's. He personally visited all aces including great names like Willy Messerschmitt, Werner Von Braun, Herman Obarth, Albert Speer, Erich Hartmann, Adolf Galland, Gerd Barkhorn plus many more. There is even a cover signed by five members of Richthofen's original flying circus. Many of the individual covers are now worth well over £200 with the Von Braun and Messerschmitt now worth £1500. Other rare signatures include Rudel, Batz, Hanna Reitsch, Hans Baur (Hitlers pilot), Matoni, Skorzaney, and Kurt Tank. 250 Pilots signed Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book

Lot 49: 250 Pilots signed Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book

Estimated Price: £4,000 - £6,000

Description: Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book signed by 250 BOB pilots and aces. 80 are signed on the book pages and 170 on labels affixed throughout the book. Incredible collection of the brave pilots who save Britain from Invasion in 1941.Also inscribed by the author Ken Wynn. This is why the book is a unique one-off. The book was specifically published in 1990 to coincide with the historic 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. 'Operation Homecoming' brought many of 'The Few' living abroad back to Britain for the Anniversary and for various receptions - Maidstone - Bentley Priory - Biggin Hill - Buckingham Palace. It was a one-off LAST TIME 'The Few' would be gathered in such numbers. Collected by Playwright, Screenwriter & Film Producer Anthony Attard, who has detailed how this amazing item came to pass. In 1990, former WWII Typhoon pilot and aviation author John Golley, introduced me to the Redgrave Theatre, Farnham, Surrey, who wanted a new play written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain. I invited John to collaborate with me. The play was called 'Freedom To Forget,' and a Gala Performance in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund was held, by totally uncanny coincidence on the 31st October 1990. The 31st October 1940 is now officially remembered as the date the Battle of Britain ended. A number of 'The Few' who lived reasonably local to Farnham were able to attend the Gala Night performance. Over the course of 1990, being commissioned to write the play enabled me to meet so many of the 'Few' who had always been my heroes. Also, Wing Commander N.P.W. 'Pat' Hancock OBE DFC, then Secretary of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association, forwarded letters I wrote to members of the Association and is how I obtained so many on labels. For every signature I received I made a donation to the B.O.B. Fighter Association to help with the financial cost of 'Operation Homecoming,' which brought so many of 'The Few' living overseas to the U.K., for the 50th Anniversary celebrations. The Czech and Pole signatories to this book were obtained at a reception held at Maidstone on Saturday 22nd September 1990. All of the other actual signatories were obtained when I was a guest at the Biggin Hill Air Show that same year, or by personal visit to their homes where I was privileged to hear their enthralling memories of the Battle of Britain. Not all the signatories replied either with a letter or by putting down their Squadron number. Some just sent back the labels duly signed. After twenty-two years now recording all the signatures, most I have still been able to identify. There are four signatures, as yet, I am unable to identify.
