Lot 17: Conrad Buff American, 1886-1975 Se Alp Se, Switzerland Oil on masonite 34 x 50 1/2 inches Provenance: Bowa...

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Conrad Buff American, 1886-1975 Se Alp Se, Switzerland Oil on masonite 34 x 50 1/2 inches Provenance: Bowater Gallery, Los Angeles, CA Provenance: Private collection A notable figure in the artistic life of southern California during the first half of the twentieth century, Buff was a lithographer, muralist, and illustrator as well as also an acclaimed landscape painter. He was recognized for his images of mountains in which he created highly structured designs of clearly articulated forms, based on the geometry of nature. This dynamic canvas reveals the hallmarks of his aesthetic, first and foremost his penchant for depicting stark peaks silhouetted against an expanse of deep blue sky. The vista, which includes a quiet lake hemmed in by steep walls of pine forest and rock, depicts the rugged alpine scenery around Appenzel, Switzerland. In all likelihood, the work was inspired by a trip Buff and his wife Mary made to Switzerland during the late 1930s, where they gathered material for her children's book, Kobi, A Boy of Switzerland (1939), illustrated with lithographs by her husband. Description: Arthur Radclyffe Dugmore American, 1870-1955 Elephants at the Watering Hole Signed A. R. Dugmore (lr) Oil on canvas 22 x 40 inches Provenance: Private collection Born in Ireland, Dugmore had an eventful life. At age twelve, his father, an eccentric nobleman, purchased a schooner, in which the family lived, cruising the oceans. Quarreling with his father, Dugmore struck out on his own. He struggled for many years to make his way. He opened a photographic studio, where he tried to make a living by painting birds. He then got a job in Northern Canada to study the beaver. In 1908, he visited Africa. This was followed by trips to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Labrador. On his travels he photographed and painted. On his return (he moved to America at some point), he lectured and wrote books. He was among the individuals responsible for the pursuit of big game with a camera, rather than a gun, leading to the wildlife art that is so widespread today. Lot 22: Charles Warren Eaton American, 1857-1937 Midsummer Signed Chas. Warren Eaton (lr) Oil on canvas 24 x 2...

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Charles Warren Eaton American, 1857-1937 Midsummer Signed Chas. Warren Eaton (lr) Oil on canvas 24 x 20 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, Charles Warren Eaton and Robert Emmett Owen, Dec. 8, 2009-Jan. 16, 2010 Known as the "Pine Tree Painter," Eaton often evoked nostalgia for natural places stoically resisting progress. In Midsummer Night, which demonstrates his incorporation of an Impressionist technique after the turn of the century, he expressed greater optimism. The warm light, the combination of new and old growth trees, and the lively brushwork create an enticing scene. This is enhanced by the path, one easily trod by visitors across flat terrain that satisfyingly leads to a viewpoint overlooking a valley. Until recently, this painting was in Eaton's estate, which was inherited by his childhood friend, Samuel Foster, and passed down to in Foster's family. Eversen (lr) Oil on panel 15 1/4 x 12 inches Provenance: American Auction Co., 1931 Private collection, New York, 1931 Born in Amsterdam, Eversen was one of Holland's finest painters of town views in the nineteenth century. He studied painting with Cornelius de Kruyff, who worked in the tradition of the seventeenth-century artist Jan van der Heyden. Eversen lived throughout much of his career in Amsterdam, exhibiting there as well as in The Hague and Leeuwarden. He moved to Rotterdam in 1889 and died in Delft. Highly regarded in his era, Eversen was a member of the Arte and Amicitiae, a prestigious association of Dutch and British artists. In his detailed topographic views, Eversen skillfully blended staffage and architecture and captured subtleties of light, creating images balanced between the historic and aesthetic, as in this view in which winter does not deter the many facets of calm yet active town life. Description: French School 19th Century Woman Picking Flowers, 1890 Signed Longpre and dated 30 VIII 90 (lr) Oil on canvas 20 x 28 inches This painting, signed Longpre, and dated to August 30, 1890, is presumably by a French artist working in a style influenced by Impressionism and Barbizon School art. While the figure of a woman picking flowers reveals the settled nature of the countryside, the relatively flat, open ground gives the viewer visual access to a refreshing vista, illuminated by a silvery atmosphere that emanates from a sky of moving swiftly clouds. Description: Henry J. Glintenkamp American, 1887-1946 Rooftops, Hoboken, New Jersey Signed Glintenkamp (ll) Oil on canvas 26 x 32 inches Provenance: Graham Gallery, New York Private collection Born in Augusta, New Jersey, Glintenkamp studied at the National Academy of Design and at the New York School of Art, where his teachers included Robert Henri and John Sloan. In 1908, he shared studio space with his friends Stuart Davis and Glenn O. Coleman, constituting a trio committed to Henri's realism and the portrayal of urban life. During this period in his art, Glintenkamp spent much of his time roaming the streets and bars of Manhattan in search of subject matter. This image of Hoboken rooftops dates from this era, representing the artist's search for aesthetic compositions in urban forms. The patterned array of the angled structures anticipates the modernist approach to which Glintenkamp would adhere in the years following the Armory Show of 1913. Gruppe on the stretcher Oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Emile A. Gruppe (1896-1978), Jul. 10-Aug. 30, 2008 Rockport, MA, The Rockport Art Association, Emile Gruppe Retrospective, Oct. 5-Nov. 23, 2008 Born in Rochester, New York, Emile Gruppe studied in New York City and in Paris. After settling in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1925, he focused on portraying the town's bustling harbor and sunlit shores, never missing a day of painting. Fish House, Cape Ann exemplifies his Impressionist-inspired aesthetic, revealing his ability to evoke nuances of light and atmosphere with a subtle range of colors and bold, vigorous brushwork. The fishing shack perched on a precarious dock and the beached and anchored boats in this scene provided him with an opportunity to use his brush with energetic directional strokes, creating an allover surface design. Description: Emile Albert Gruppe American, 1896-1978 Mending the Nets, Cape Ann Signed Emile A. Gruppe (lr); inscribed as Morning in Gloucester, by Emile A. Gruppe on the stretcher Oil on canvas 30 x 36 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Emile A. Gruppe (1896-1978), Jul. 10-Aug. 30, 2008 Rockport, MA, The Rockport Art Association, Emile Gruppe Retrospective, Oct. 5-Nov. 23, 2008 Literature: Carol Lowrey, "Emile A. Gruppe (1896-1978)," American Art Review 20 (December 2008), 105 color illus. Gruppe loved to paint views of Gloucester's bustling waterfront, where one could find large schooners huddled next to smaller cat boats, lobster boats and dories. This glimpse shows the inner harbor in the early morning, when the pale light of dawn envelops the setting in a delicate veil of mist. The dockworkers mending the nets in the foreground create a sense of scale, while Gruppe often incorporated them to reveal his feeling that in a harbor scene "workmen are essential." The two men lifting the nets in the foreground are positioned to frame the large boat in the middleground. Silhouetted against an expanse of sky, the vessel's tall masts serve as a reminder that Gruppé would often exaggerate their height in order to give ordinary working boats a "greater dignity." An emblem of Gloucester's role as a commercial fishing hub, the stately vessel is flanked by other craft nestled close to the pier. A few seagulls dive and bank above the calm water, adding to the feeling of activity that permeates the image, as does the inclusion of various boats in the distance. Description: Armand (Francois Joseph) Henrion French, 1875-1958 Clown with Monocle Signed Arm. Henrion. (lr) Oil on panel 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection A Belgian-born artist who exhibited in Belgian Salons before settling in Paris and becoming a naturalized French citizen, Henrion had a consuming fascination the character of Pierrot, a French equivalent of the Italian Pedrolino of the Commedia dell'arte. Henrion portrayed himself as this comic trickster, who traditionally did not wear a mask, but instead applied heavy white face makeup. Many artists, from Jean-Antoine Watteau to Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Aubrey Beardsley were also captivated by Pierrot, often considering him a kind of mirror image of the artist. Henrion's literal transformation of Pierrot into himself presents a unique twist on the legacy of the views of this character in whom artists have long seen themselves echoed. In portraying himself as Pierrot, Henrion explored nuances of humor, as his expressions in the works encompass the facial expressions conveying such qualities as the tongue-in-cheek, the retort, the comeback, the riposte, and the droll comment. Henrion's animated, gestural handling in the creation of the small jewel-like depictions concurs with the feeling they convey of a light-hearted sense that life is to be enjoyed. He learned engraving from his father John Hill and began his career in that field as well as creating topographical scenes in the traditional English manner along with watercolors of North American cities. At age forty-three, inspired by John Ruskin's Modern Painters, he turned to pure landscape painting. He became a member and later president of the Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art, the leading voice of the American Pre-Raphaelite movement. Painting directly from nature, he developed a stippled miniaturistic technique, creating microcosmic views with brilliant coloration and translucency. He found his subjects in many locales, including New Jersey and along the Hudson River. Hill's son, John Henry Hill was born in West Nyack, New York, and became a devoted Ruskinian as well as a founding member of the association. His work was frequently discussed in the association's journal, The New Path (1863-65). Ruskin would praise him in an 1881 letter for a "very great art gift." He studied the work of J.M.W. Turner in England, 1864-65, and in 1868 and 1870, accompanied geologist Clarence King on expeditions to the American West. Along with still lifes, Hill rendered crisply detailed landscapes in the Catskills, New England, and around West Nyack, where he settled in 1879, following the death of his father. Description: Charles Salis Kaelin American, 1858-1929 Snowy Woodland Signed C. S. Kaelin (lr) Oil on canvas 24 x 28 1/8 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Kaelin studied in his native Cincinnati at the McMicken School of Design and in New York at the Art Students League under John Twachtman. He began spending summers on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, in 1892, and moved there permanently in 1916, settling in Rockport. Although he developed a reputation as a "hermit painter" for his desire for privacy, he was well known to the Rockport citizenry who would nickname his favorite painting sites, "Kaelin's Woods" and "Kaelin's Brook." Kaelin worked en plein air, and Snowy Woodland was a result of one of his many winter forays into rocky inlands, where he used succinct, faceted Divisionist strokes to transform the landscape into an abstract network of rhythmic, tightly-woven strokes, the patchy snow affording him the opportunity for an especially luminous and airy image. Kaelin (ll) Oil on canvas 24 1/8 x 20 inches Unframed Provenance: Estate of Joan Herschede, Cincinatti Private collection After leaving his native Cincinnati and settling in Rockport, Massachusetts in 1916, Kaelin went on to depict the harbors of Cape Ann throughout the seasons and in under varying weather conditions. In Winter Woods, he used a Divisionist method to capture the vivacity of the reflective surface of snow in the woods. With small, faceted strokes, he created a woven surface that is patterned yet expressive of the chill of this peaceful natural locale. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
