Condition Report: Heavy craquelure and crazing to pigment layer, painting has been mounted down solidly onto a sheet of masonite, pigment layer is coated with more than one layer of yellowed varnish with embedded grime. The frame has damage to the lower right corner with missing pieces and repairs.

Description: 50" x 40-1/4" canvas Full-length portrait of Susan Howland Aspinwall (1779-1843), great-grandmother of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and one of her four daughters, presumably eldest daughter/child Margaret Elizabeth Aspinwall. Oil on canvas, no signature seen, set in wooden frame with name plaque and gold fillet. Inscribed on stretcher bar verso "Susan Howland Aspinwall was the great grandmother of Susan Tuckerman". She was also the great-grandmother of FDR - her daughter Mary Rebecca Aspinwall married Isaac Roosevelt and they had a son James Roosevelt, who married Sara Delano, and they had a child Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. Condition Report: Very good condition consistent with age, varnish uneven. Previous restorations: canvas has been re-lined, inpainted and revarnished. Inpainting is sparse and noninvasive. Frame has traction crackle and fissures.

Condition Report: Overall good, slight craquelure throughout, small circle of in-painting to far right of bosom, in-painting to fabric of dress at the lower portion, all in-painting only visible under UV light. Canvas has measurement inscriptions around oval area which are concealed by frame, pinholes to corners of canvas concealed by frame.

Minor losses to the frame. The painting will greatly benefit from cleaning.
