[Quran] Manuscript Quran,

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Ottoman, probably 18th century, 454 p. text in black and red ink, 27 lines per page, on laid, polished paper, watermarked "crown star crescent", various variants, bound in characteristic binding of blindstamped full sheepskin with flap, 29.5 x 21 cm. Intensively used, soiled/stained copy, apparently complete with at beginning and end a triangular sloping text; bookblock loose and in pieces, various pages at the end creased and frayed and with reinforced margins; binding with scratching/rubbing. Sold w.a.f. We found a reference online that paper with this watermark was made in Europe specifically for the Islamic market, from the 16th to the 18th century; during that period it was used throughout the entire Ottoman empire. Online examples of this type of watermark confirm this, but we could not trace the exact watermark of our manuscript. We presume 18th century, but it could also be 17th century.

Letter from cloth merchant Louis Schlemm to Mrs. Louvrex n»e Wuchters

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Letter in pen and ink, dated "Cura¡ao, pro April 1794", concerning the cloth, stockings and hats trade, on three pages of a bifolium, 33.5 x 21.5 cm., with appendix of 6 pieces of original cloth with explanatory note ("differente pattroonen, de Bouquette verder van malkander") and with the original envelope with wax seal (also with the name of captain Herm. Kniebel on the envelope). Interesting letters, providing a lovely insight into the cloth trade at the end of the 18th century, and indirectly also into slavery on the island of Cura¡ao. The letter is addressed to Johanna Maria Louvrex (1758-1812) ("Mevrouw, & seer geŒstimeerde vriendin"), the wife of Henri Lambert Louvrex, who owned a large trade office in Amsterdam (corner of Keizersgracht-Leidsestraat) together with Jacob van Lennep. The writer, Louis Schlemm was a merchant on Cura¡ao, owner of a plantation and colonial council member. In the letter, Schlemm, who did business with the Louvrex family, indicates that his sick wife ("met haare slegte Borst reeds lange soekelende") is expecting prosperity with his "nego¡ie". The 30 hats have arrived in good order, but sales are hampered by competition from Philadelphia: "Ik sal wel daarmeede wat soeckelen, maar egter denke, dat het nog wel uijtvallen sal." "(...). Ik raade Uwe nooit weeder hoede te senden nog Vrouwe Koussen, terwijl hier Cattoen in overvloet, onze slave daagelijks breeden." Then Schlemm orders a large number of articles which do sell, such as "1 p. Swart Castoor, een soort goed dat de Mulatinnen in diepe rouw dragen tot kleer" or "fijne batiste, onopgemaakt, niet geklandert maar geen dunne doek, dat onverkoopbaar is". He also mentions the samples he sent along, such as "20 p. swarte Purper, volgens monster" and "10 p. seersukkers, maar geen ander, als van bijgaand monster." After this list, he mentions "connoissement" (price) on "1 Baal Coffij Boonen". In the final part of the letter he mentions he regrets the mistakes made with earlier invoic

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Collection of 186 abstracts of resolutions originally published from 10 May 1672 to 23 January 1799, mostly in manuscript but also with printed quires, a total of ca. 800 p., with manuscript introduction by Directeur-Generaal H. van Hooff (dated "'s Hage den 27e Februarij 1799 5e jaar der Bataafsche Vrijheid"), furthermore with letterpress index (11 p.), original half sheepskin, gilt back with raised bands with morocco title shield, folio (tears to hinges). The introduction is addressed to Kolonels-Directeur J.J. de Freijtag, B.W. de Roy van Wichen, A. Croiset, C. Gockinga, E.G. van der Plaat and C.R.T. Krayenhoff. In the introduction Van Hoff explains why such a list is required: he mentions that one of the youngest classes of the Corps der Genie, who have only served since the organisation of 1795, cannot be expected to be acquainted with the earlier resolutions relating to the Corps. This specialised list with such resolutions offers a solution. "Zoodanig een lijst zoude, mijns oordeels, ook voor de overige leden van het corps van dienst kunnen zijn, al was het maar, om bij gelegenheid van het formeeren van bestekken, als het stellen van missives etc. bij welke veelal zommige Resolutien moeten worden aangehaald, daaruit derzelver datum met een opslag van het oog te kunnen vinden." Thanks to the letterpress list, this is entirely correct.

[Den Bosch] Bernard Willem de Roy van Wichen.

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Interesting text by the Kolonel-Directeur van 's Lands FortificatiŒn, an important addition to an earlier memoir, concerning the "schadelijke hoogtens om deeze stad geleegen" - in relation to the threat of enemy attacks on Fort Orthen. He concludes that it is unfortunately necessary to "het dorp van Hintham te Sacrifieeren. Het is zeeker eene hardigheid om tot deze extremiteit te moeten komen, maar men is dikwijls verpligt kleine opofferingen te doen om groote voordeelen." He points out that the skilled French general Dejean apparently missed the height. A second height mentioned is situated on the other side of the city: klein Deuteren. The author points out that during the last siege the city had suffered most from this position, and that the height must be completely removed. The poor condition of the city walls, which are much too high, is mentioned too, with the proposition to reduce them in height. He estimates the total cost of the required works around the city at an at the time astonishing 130.000 guilder, but as the city is a key fortress, it would be irresponsible "deeze stad in die zwakken staat te laten, als waarin dezelve zig thans bevind, en waar van mogelijk het welweezen van de geheele Republiek afhangt."
