Description: RARE ENGLISH DATED PEARLWARE PUZZLE JUG, the ovoid body molded with elaborate acanthus leaves in underglaze green and brown washes, the handle formed as the winged figure of Fame blowing a trumpet, a brown band around the circumference with a sgraffito inscription, "When this you see remember me and keep me in your mind /Let all the world say what they will make of me as you find," and dated "1790" under the handle.

Condition Report: Very good overall condition considering its unusual form: left hand wing restored and neck, where it attaches to body, shows small crack and light restoration, too. Horn, right hand, rear of head and buttress attaching figural head to jug all sprayed.

Description: LARGE BRITISH REDWARE DATED PUZZLE JUG, the slip-decorated sgraffito jug of baluster form, the strap handle with nozzle to top, the collar with space for four nozzles, with ocher-yellow glaze, incised and scratched in orange, the neck alternating vertical rectangular notches and a band of three dots, the handle incised with three long zigzagging lines, the neck incised with zigzag vertical lines to either side of the notches, the waist incised with large stylized foliate motifs of two large tulip sprays on curved stems to either side of a double-handled urn planted with a flowering and budding tulip, below incised words, "Mary Morgans ounr" to the top left shoulder and top right shoulder "Thomas arthyr meke[r]" with "June 19/1830" above four horizontal zigzagging lines under the handle. Attributed to Ewenny, Wales.

Condition Report: Good overall condition: All four nozzles absent, thus revealing the hollow collar. Enamels flaked off handle sides consistent with use; the base with many chips. All-over crazing to ocher glaze; some flaking to the enamels on the body.

Derbyshire, England.

Condition Report: Excellent condition overall; one can see the hand-cut slices into the clay body slightly beyond the perimeter area of some of the cut-outs. The underside is slightly pimpled perhaps due to underfiring.

Description: ENGLISH SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE PUZZLE JUG, the upper neck with large oval cut outs in a band; the round collar issuing three nozzles; the lower neck cut into geometric patterns with ovals and hearts; ovals and clubs; ovals and triangles and ovals and diamonds centering a large hole; alternating with two dots, with two bands molded in low relief toward the belly, the lower body of baluster form with wide pinched ankle flaring to foot, with applied figural "sprigs" of windmill; male and female topers centering a drunken gentleman smoking a pipe; and two drunken sailors walking, with ribbed, strap-form handle, with mottled light-brown glazing, unmarked. Attributed to Fulham, London, England.

Condition Report: Very good overall condition: firing crack to lower right hand side of handle; a couple of the reticulations show knife marks and additional incisions, typical of the form.

Condition Report: Very good condition overall: one short horizontal firing tear to the body under the handle and another very short vertical firing crack at the handle terminate. Crazing typical of age. A few glaze pings, minor wear to enamels at nozzles.

Description: ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE DOUBLE PUZZLE JUG, formed as a hollow ring, the center sides cut-out in the pattern of a six-petaled flower, a small figure of a standing acrobat "trapped" to the interior, the ring on a flared, rounded-rectangular foot, topped with a flaring, reticulated pierced neck above a bulbous collar issuing three cannon-form nozzles, the handle of arched, rounded form, with extensive gilt leaves on the surface sides, the ring transfer-printed in underglaze sepia with a band of oak-leaves and acorns to both sides and a serpentine laurel leaf braid, with blue-green and bright green enameling, with scrolled, gilt flourishes and bands to the panels of the foot, the acrobat dressed in typical bright-colored costume with dots and stripes, on a low mounded base, unmarked.

Condition Report: Excellent overall condition, with typical overall crazing to the glaze.

Description: CONTINENTAL PUZZLE JUGS, LOT OF TWO, the first of baluster form, with a single nozzle issuing from the collar over a highly-reticulated neck cut out in geometric foliate designs over a plain body, enameled in blue-green, probably French; the second, a tall and slender red earthenware double-puzzle jug with single nozzle issuing from a collar over a very long neck lightly cut out with small holes and two hearts facing each other vertically under the spout, over a donut-ring body, tapering to the ankle, issuing a flared foot, the entire surface dipped in a dark brown mottled glaze, the underside foot with incised W.

Condition Report: Good overall condition : the first with multiple shallow chips to the rim, and with mottling to the enamel; the second thickly-modeled, with handle reglued. Much of the foot of this jug never received enough glaze about a quarter of the foot is plain clay. There are a few flakes to the glaze on the body.

Description: SAVONA (ITALY) FAIENCE PUZZLE JUG, with a wide ovate mouth incorporating the puzzle jug collar, the central pinched spout with hole above a very wide neck deeply-cut with large flowers and geometric shapes above the globular body on short foot, the serpentine handle following the form of the jug, the cream-color body painted with grey and cobalt- blue outlining the inner and outer rim, with dashes to handle, enameled with delightful scene of rabbit and dog surrounded by bold foliate designs, centering an oval flaming cartouche with the motto, "Chi Beve Nopca" [Who Drinks is a Fool] unmarked.

Condition Report: Very good condition: typical abraded rims and minor, typical flaking of enamels.

Description: CONTINENTAL POTTERY PUZZLE JUGS, LOT OF THREE, the first, probably Dutch or Belgian, with collar issuing a nozzle over a wide neck reticulated with hearts, ovals and dots, above a globular body, the c-form handle with additional semi-circle at lower terminate, the white body decorated with a single central large stylized orange and yellow flower blooming in the middle of blue dashes, stems and scrolls, unmarked. The second two, French, with snaking grape clusters forming the spouts above the neck ring, the grapevine undulating to the sides of the ring, and with grape vine handles, the jug necks reticulated with grape vines; leaves and fruit bunches, above the main globular body on an elongated ankle with swelling foot. Both inscribed to the body fronts "Buvez je le veux/ Mais sachez placer votre main" with blue neck rings, purple-speckled grape decor to spouts, bodies and handles; the grape-themed necks realistically-colored, the foot with blue and yellow concentric bands; one with stylized florettes of orange, blue and green to either side of the slogan; the same example with the grapevine atop the ring forming a moustache guard, neither marked.

Condition Report: Very good overall condition: hairline crack and one glaze chip to neck; long light crack to glaze near foot; the other two lightly crazed.

BRANNAM (BARUM) EARTHENWARE PUZZLE JUG, of baluster form, with collar issuing three simple nozzles above a neck with holes alternating with stylized reticulated flowers, the body incised and slip-decorated with a fish rising from churning waves, the sides and back with motto sgrafittoed, "Within this jug there is good liquor/Tis fit for Parson or for Vicar/ But how to drink and not to spill/ will try the utmost of your skill," over several scored lines, the overall body green-glazed, with the fish picked out in brown, ocher, light blue and dark blue, the underside marked CH Brannam Barum 1897.

Condition Report: Very good condition: the central nozzle chipped and with related crack where it meets the collar; worn enamels to all nozzle terminates.

Condition Report: Excellent; the second jug has a chipped leaf near the word "PUEBLA".

Hairline cracks to the slip used to attach the handle and, tiny chips to handle terminate, a tiny "slice" from cutting out the reticulations, is visible near one of the central scroll areas to the side. There are a couple of minute, nearly unnoticeable firing flaws.

Description: ENGLISH POTTERY MOCHAWARE AND PRATTWARE ARTICLES, LOT OF SEVEN, comprising a pair of pearlware mochaware teabowls and saucers, the lower bodies molded with engine-turned ribbing, with wide bands of multi-colored, inlaid agate below a black slip-filled checkered band; together with a Prattware swirl-molded teabowl and saucer, painted in typical palette with stylized foliate and floral designs, the teabowl marked in brown with an X to the underside; and a pearlware cache-pot of tapering cylindrical form, with hole for water drainage, decorated with a swagged garland of ivy leaves and bowed ribbons molded to the sides, with geometric horizontal and vertical designs in low- and high-relief to the sides. The single teabowl and saucer attributed to The Don pottery, Yorkshire.

Condition Report: Very good: both teabowls and saucers have worn gilt rims; a few minute chips to rims and one teabowl has a 1 1/2" crack from the edge down to the side. The Prattware teabowl has some light staining and a horizontal firing tear to the interior, as well as a chip to the foot. The gilt line rim to the cache pot is nearly all worn away, with subsequent small area of roughness and one minute chip. There are a few tiny flakes to the enamel on the body; the footrim has two minute chips and some ware. There is one glaze ping to the enamel on the vertical striping.

Description: CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN "ROSE CANTON" PALETTE PLATES, LOT OF TWO, both with gilt bands enclosing colorful borders painted with Chinese lucky symbols, quail; butterflies; bats; etc., the larger plate with these motifs enclosing a large view of a supplicant before a Manchu leader in an interior; the smaller plate with a view of women at play with children in a garden, while a scholar looks on within a windowed home.

Condition Report: Excellent: the smaller with two tiny footrim chips; each with a small area of wear to the center area of the face consistent with stacking.
