Scarce Hoggson Factory Engraved Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot 1: Scarce Hoggson Factory Engraved Henry Lever Action Rifle

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Scarce Hoggson Factory Engraved Henry Lever Action RifleLater production Henry Lever Action rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., circa April 1865. The silver-plated brass receiver and buttplate are factory engraved with the later style pattern scroll and punch dot engraving executed by Samuel J. Hoggson. This later style engraving has the distinctive animal scene on the left side plate and large flower petals on both sides of the forward portion of the receiver. The scrollwork and punch dot matting extend to the top of the receiver, upper tang and buttplate heel. The engraved panels on the sides of the receiver have double line, scalloped borders. The engraving is nearly identical to the engraving on Henry rifle, serial number, 9888 illustrated on page 43 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis and Henry rifle, serial number 7158, shown on page 150 of "THE HENRY RIFLE" by Les Quick. The rifle has the later production Henry features which include; receiver with no rear sight dovetail, beveled magazine follower slot, large diameter magazine follower and buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade while the rear sight is fitted with a Winchester Model 1866 carbine folding two-leaf sight. The hammer spur has the standard borderless knurling and the buttplate has a hinged trap. The butt trap contains the four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod furnished with late production Henry rifles. The American walnut or rosewood stock has a non-factory, lead blank in the sling swivel inlet stamped "A. BONNETT/BROOKSVILLE PA" in two lines. The screw-fastened sling loop is still present on the left side of the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO, NEWHAVEN CT." in Roman (serif) letters ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "8837" is stamped on top of the barrel behind the rear sight dovetail, inside of the buttplate, left side of the lower tang and in the upper tang inlet of the stock. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style, cap-head, buttplate screws and the tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. Oliver Winchester's "W" inspection mark is stamped on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. Most Henry rifles were manufactured during the Civil War to meet the demand for combat weapons; factory engraved Henry rifles like this classic example are scarce.Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co.Model: Henry RifleBBL: 24 inchStock: walnutGauge: 44 Henry RFFinish: blue/silver-platedGrips: Serial Number: 8837

Condition Report: Good as partially restored. The rifle retains traces of the delicate silver-plated finish on the receiver and buttplate. The exposed brass on the receiver and buttplate has an attractive, untouched patina. The barrel legend has been professionally remarked and the barrel artificially aged to an even, deep brown patina. The edges of the barrel are sharp. There are traces of fine pitting along the lower portion of the magazine. The rear sight appears to be a contemporary replacement. The well-executed engraving on the receiver and buttplate is deep and sharp. The receiver and buttplate show moderate handling wear. The receiver screw heads are battered. The right side plate has been removed and there is a slight gap between the top of the side plate and the receiver. The stock retains the original piano finish with moderate handling wear with scattered shallow dents and scratches. This is a solid representative example of a desirable factory engraved Henry Lever Action rifle.

First Year Production New Haven Arms Co., Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot 8: First Year Production New Haven Arms Co., Henry Lever Action Rifle

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: First Year Production New Haven Arms Co., Henry Lever Action RifleHenry lever action rifle manufactured in September 1862 during the fourth month of production. The rifle has the distinctive Henry 'gunmetal' (brass) receiver and buttplate and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. This early production rifle has the first pattern receiver with rear sight dove-tail. The barrel has a nickel-silver, early style, half-moon front sight and a dove-tail mounted, folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The magazine has the first pattern, small diameter, follower and the receiver has the early straight cut follower slot. The receiver has the second pattern loading lever with lever latch introduced about serial number 400. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. The straight grain American walnut stock is not fitted with a sling swivel and the left side of the barrel lacks the screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and loop were extra cost, special order, features on early-mid production Henry rifles. The brass buttplate has the first style rounded heel. The buttplate has a hinged trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines. The first style legend is shorter (approximately 2-17/32 inches long) and has Roman (serifed) letters except for the final "NEWHAVEN" in the second line which utilizes Gothic (block) letters. In the high 3000 serial number range a larger, 3-9/32inch legend was adopted that featured all serifed letters. The serial number "896" is located on the top barrel flat immediately ahead of the receiver, the lower left side of the tang underneath the stock the upper stock inlet, the inside of the buttplate heel, the shanks of the fitted buttplate screws and the shanks of the three tang screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. Although the Federal government purchased only about 1700 Henry rifles during the Civil War; most of the Henry rifles manufactured between 1862 and 1865 are believed to have been privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the advantage of the fire power offered by a lever-action, 15-shot, magazine rifle. The Henry rifle was particularly popular with soldiers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan regiments. Following the Civil War, Henry rifles were equally popular in the frontier West. Archaeologists at the Little Big Horn battlefield recovered a substantial number of spent cartridges from Henry rifles used by Native American warriors. Civil War production Henry rifles, like this early example, are among the most historically significant 19th Century American firearms.Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co.Model: Henry RifleBBL: 24 inchStock: walnutGauge: 44 Henry RFFinish: blue/brassGrips: Serial Number: 896

Condition Report: Good. The rifle is original with moderate handling wear. The barrel has a gray-brown patina with smooth metal surfaces. The barrel edges are sharp. The barrel appears to have been acid cleaned long ago. The barrel legend and serial umber are crisp. The rear sight is original to the rifle but the leaf will not elevate. The brass receiver and buttplate have a good-looking aged patina. The receiver and buttplate have scattered light scratches and handling marks. There are a number of shallow scratches and dents along the upper side plate joints and hammer screw. The hammer, trigger and lever have a silver-gray patina. The stock is in good condition with numerous minor handling marks. The hammer spring requires repair. This is a solid original example of a scarce, first year production Henry Lever Action rifle with the desirable early features.

Exceptional Rare Savage Model 1899-D Lever Action Military Musket

Lot 10: Exceptional Rare Savage Model 1899-D Lever Action Military Musket

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Exceptional Rare Savage Model 1899-D Lever Action Military MusketThis is an exceptional original example of one of the Savage Model 1899-D Military Muskets sent to Canada on contract during World War I to arm the Montreal Home Guard. It's believed that all of the production was shipped to Canada. The rifles in "musket" form incorporated a bayonet lug and military style stock with a handguard. They were chambered in the 303 Savage cartridge so as not to delay delivery which would have resulted if the design was altered for the standard Canadian 303 British Mk II cartridge. The Guardsmen were responsible for purchasing their own rifles and had the option of having their names stamped on the stock. Many also chose to have their names engraved on the left side of the receiver, (not the case with this rifle). The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address/patent dates, which the majority is covered by the hand guard and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver ahead of the trigger guard. Blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1,300 yards. The front barrel band is fitted with a bayonet lug. Blue finish with casehardened lever and mounted with a smooth full length walnut forearm with grasping grooves, matching hand guard, sling swivel on the rear barrel band and a straight grip perch belly stock with a steel carbine buttplate and sling swivel. The buttplate tang is marked with the rack number "328" and the top of the stock is stamped "F.A. STEVENSON" and "MHG/1914".Manufacturer: SavageModel: 99BBL: 26 inch roundStock: walnutGauge: 303 savageFinish: blueGrips: Serial Number: 164935

Condition Report: Excellent. The rifle retains 97% plus bright original high polish blue finish showing some edge wear, minor thinning and some minor scratches and dings. The lever retains 75% plus original slightly darkened case colors with some areas fading to gray. There is some discoloration on top of the bolt. The wood is excellent with almost all of the original varnish remaining, showing a thin crack at the butt, mild corrosion on the buttplate, some scattered minor storage dings and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. Writer cannot recall ever offering a finer example at auction!

The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number "122747" is stamped on the lower tang behind the tang screws.Manufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1886BBL: 22 inch roundStock: walnutGauge: 45-70Finish: blueGrips: Serial Number: 122747

Condition Report: Very fine with 80% plus of the original blue finish with light blue loss on the underside of the receiver and take down mechanism with the cocking lever also having faded to a silvery patina with subdued case colors on the upper part of the lever. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with 90% of the original factory varnish with some areas of light flaking and minor handling marks. The checkering is also in very fine condition with nice original checkering showing light wear across the tops of the checkering. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover guide rail and later style dust cover with serrated finger guide. The 28 inch full octagon barrel, full length magazine, dust cover and loading gate are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with checkered panels and a piano finish. The forearm cap, dust cover, cartridge elevator, receiver and buttplate heel are factory engraved with fine scrollwork on a punch dot background. The left side plate is engraved with a game scene featuring two detailed deer and the right side plate has an open banner. The rifle is equipped with a special order single-set trigger. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1000 yards and marked "1876" at the top of the leaf. "MODEL. 1876." is roll-stamped on the upper tang. The serial number "16771" is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. Included with the rifle is a factory letter, which verifies the caliber, octagonal barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, casehardened receiver and the Five Dollar level engraving. Additionally, the letter reports that the rifle arrived at the warehouse on October 1, 1887 and left on December 1, 1886, which we ascribe to a transcription error.Manufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1876BBL: 28 inch octagonStock: fancy walnut checkeredGauge: 45-60 WCFFinish: blue/casehardenedGrips: pistol gripSerial Number: 16771

Condition Report: Fine. The rifle is all original with about 70% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. The case color pattern is visible on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have mostly faded to a mottled, silver-gray, patina. The flawlessly executed, Ulrich-engraved scrollwork and game scene are crisp. The highly figured, deluxe walnut stock and forearm are both in fine overall condition with moderate wear. Lot 17: Scarce U.S. Contract, Martially Inspected, New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Scarce U.S. Contract, Martially Inspected, New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action RifleHenry lever-action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., in November 1863. This rifle is one of the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in December 1863 to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry regiment. The 1st D.C. Cavalry was the only Federal unit entirely armed with Henry rifles during the Civil War. Commanded by politically connected Col. Lafayette Baker, the 1st D.C. Cavalry was initially assigned to police and provost duty in the District of Columbia operating under the direct orders of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. After a series of successful raids against Federal units in Northern Virginia by Col. John S. Mosby, the 1st D.C. Cavalry was assigned to combat Confederate partisan rangers. In May 1864 the regiment was reassigned to the Department of Virginia and saw action in operations around Petersburg. The 1st D.C Cavalry was present at Appomattox Court House when the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered on April 9, 1865. During the fighting around Petersburg during the summer and fall of 1864 a significant number of Henry rifles were captured from the 1st D.C. Cavalry. Some captured 1st D.C. Cavalry Henry rifles were apparently issued to the body guard of Confederate President Jefferson Davis when he fled from the Confederate capital during the final days of the Civil War. The 800 Henry rifles purchased for the 1st D.C. Cavalry under the December 30, 1863 contract are the only Henry rifles fully marked with Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks. The Ordnance Department purchased 627 additional Henry rifles in April-May 1865 to arm the 3rd U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry regiment. However the 1865 contract rifles did not have Ordnance inspection marks and were issued too late to be used in combat. This rifle has all of the features found on the late 1863 production rifles purchased for the 1st D.C. Cavalry. The barrel and integral 15-shot magazine have a square-back nickel-silver front sight blade and Third Pattern folding leaf rear sight with "900" yard marking below the sight notch on the top of the leaf. The magazine has the Second Pattern large diameter brass follower and the follower slot on the bottom of the receiver has milled flats to accept the larger follower. The distinctive brass receiver is the Second Pattern introduced about serial number 3,100 that lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail. The early style buttplate has a rounded heel and hinged brass butt trap door. The stock is correctly not fitted with a sling swivel and the left side of the barrel lacks the screw fastened loop for a sling hook (most 1st D.C. Henry rifles were not fitted with sling swivels and loops which were special order items. The rifles were carried in a leather scabbard manufactured by the Washington Arsenal especially for the 1st D.C. Cavalry). The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the Second Style two-line legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860./MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN. CT.". The legend is slight larger than the markings used thru about serial number 3300 and has serifed (Roman) letters for all the markings. The right barrel flat is stamped with the "C.G.C." initials of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Charles G. Chapman. A Ordnance final inspection mark consisting of the script initials "CGC" with an oval border is visible on the right side of the stock wrist. A. "C" sub-inspection mark is also stamped on the right corner of the buttplate. A single New Haven Arms Co., "H" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the right barrel flat below the "C.G.C." inspection mark. Two "H H" sub-inspection marks are stamped on the right side of the receiver adjacent to the barrel. The rifle serial number "3592" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, on the lower left side of the receiver tang underneath the stock, in the upper tang inlet of the stock, on the inside of the buttplate toe and on the shanks of both the hand fitted buttplate screws. The tang screws are typically not serial numbered on Henry rifles above serial number 3100.Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co.Model: Henry RifleBBL: 24 inch octagonStock: walnutGauge: 44 Henry RFFinish: blueGrips: Serial Number: 3592

Condition Report: Good. The rifle is all original and shows wear expected of a combat weapon that was used in action. The barrel/magazine has a plum brown patina with smooth metal surfaces. The barrel edges are slightly rounded from handling. The New Haven Arms legend, serial number and "C.G.C." sub-inspection mark are light but legible. The hammer, trigger and lever have a mottled brown patina with traces of the original case colors. The brass receiver and buttplate have a good looking patina. The edges of the receiver show some handling wear and there are some scratches and dents along the upper edges of the side-plates. The side plate joints remain tight. The upper receiver tang is cracked across the forward tang screw hole and the tang and stock wrist are slightly bent. The buttplate has scattered minor dents and scratches. The stock has a faint but visible Ordnance final inspection mark on the left wrist and is good overall with moderate handling wear. The stock appears to have been lightly sanded and refinished. This is a good original example of one of the few Civil War weapons that can be identified to a specific combat unit; the 1st D.C. Cavalry.
