China: Album of a French missionary in China

Lot 4501: China: Album of a French missionary in China

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Album of a French missionary in China: "Souvenirs du Révérend Père Léon Rousseau". 1897 - 1917. 31 vintage collodion paper prints. Most circa 12 x 9 cm and a few 21 x 30 cm (3), several photos missing. First page with handwritten title in ink, photos mounted in slits on album pages (times-stained in edges), annotated in French in ink on the mount, bound together in canvas album (spine split). This album gives an insightful view of the Christian missionaries in China. The large Christian settlements were also economic centers and often the source of conflicts with native officials. This tension was one of the main reasons for the upheaval and revolt in 1900 in China. The images in the album offered here give an impression of the strong cultural and economic influence missionaries had in China at the time. - Some prints faded, some with surface rubbing, tears, loss in corners, a few with taped corners, otherwise most in good condition.
