Horst P. Horst, Mainbocher Corset, Paris, 1939

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Horst P. Horst (1906 - 1999)Mainbocher Corset, Paris, 1939Gelatin silver print, printed laterSigned, titled and dated in pencil on verso30 x 22.5 cm (11 7/8 x 8 7/8 in) Private Collection, U.S.A. Condition Report: This print is in very good condition. Main Rousseau Bocher was born in Chicago in 1890, ‘Mainbocher’ as he later became known, was extremely gifted and creative – he was a trained lithographer, a sketch artist, an illustrator for Harpers Bazaar, Paris and later in New York was responsible for the design of stage costume and uniforms (on a shoestring) of the American WAVES (U.S. Navy). From the beginning, he favoured the simple, elegant and conservative with the luxury of cut, materials and workmanship which came to be recognised by the elite (it was no surprise that the Duchess of Windsor chose him to design her trousseau for her marriage in 1937, as his simple line and fall of his fabrics flattered her slim and severe good looks). He made a calculated point of knowing his clients personally and based his designs almost around their lifestyles, managing to successfully package himself as an exclusive designer to the wealthy and the titled. Before Mainbocher left Paris for New York just before the war, his final collections, groundbreaking in their body-conscious focus, attracted a lot of attention. His creation of the Mainbocher Corset cinched the waist dramatically and radically altered the previous silhouette of the 1930's. This departure, marking a new phase in fashion, was immortalised in 1939 by Horst’s sensual homage shown here. On his arrival in New York, Mainbocher was greeted enthusiastically by society women who wanted to be seen to patronise a fellow American, but who also wanted to be associated with a man whom by now had a legendary reputation for making women not only feel good but also look exquisitely well-bred. Condition Report: This print is in good condition. “I love women, I admire them greatly,” Helmut Newton one confessed. “And when people say ‘you use them like objects of desire,’ [I think to myself,] ‘well, I hope they are objects of desire.’ It would be terrible if they weren’t.” However, for Newton the objectification of his models was not to benefit his own pleasure, but rather, their own. Drawing inspiration from Berlin’s leading zeitgeist publications from the 1920s and 30s such as Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung and others, Newton created a working space for his models that was part decadent and part unorthodox—a safe microcosm in which fantasies became reality. And perhaps most famously of all, Newton engendered an environment in which his female models—all tall, statuesque and curvaceous—claimed the space around them with unapologetic poise and commanding sensuality. Unsurprisingly, as a photographer Newton believed that his job was to “seduce, amuse and entertain.” Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Condition Report: The print has some some light handling marks to the bottom left quadrant with some very light minor paper loss on verso due to the removal of framing tape. "We had a little stone cottage at Gordes. It was a hot summer, and I was repairing the attic. I needed a trowel, so I came down and there was Marie-Anne standing naked on the stone flags, washing herself from the tin basin. ‘Don’t move,’ I said and, my hands full of plaster, I grabbed my Rolleiflex and took four shots. It was the second shot which I chose. It took two minutes in all. Miracles exist, I experienced it. I have never been so anxious as when I developed that film. I felt that, if the image was good, technically and aesthetically, it would be a major moment in my life, a prosaic moment of extraordinary poetry.” Willy Ronis Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Description: David Bailey (b. 1938)Amanda Johnson, Songwriter / Performer / Contortionist / Bitch / Cunt, 2003 Gelatin silver printArtist's initials in pencil on the verso39 x 30 cm (15.4 x 11.8 in) Gifted by the artist to the previous ownerPrivate Collection, London  Condition Report: This print is in good condition. David Bailey’s project ‘Democracy’ is concerned with nakedness, the concept of which excited him – people directly exposed with no clever lighting or sheen of make-up. He had, he claimed, no wish to contribute more images to the canon of the classical or traditional nude: “All that worrying about poncy lighting, making people look like landscapes or rocks … If I wanted to photograph a fucking rock, I’d photograph a fucking rock.” He is loath to admit it, but the idea for a body of work entitled ‘David Bailey’s Democracy’ came to him while reading Plato’s Republic. From this he conjured up the idea of a cast of characters, not posed or composed, but instead literally standing in their own skins. He advertised for naked models (over 100 applied), laying down a set of rules: everyone was to be photographed in the same surroundings with the same lighting, with each subject given six shots. Each volunteer was placed in front of a white backdrop under a single light, while Bailey shot them from 12 feet away. The photographer’s own platonic utopia resulted, captured by a huge camera chosen for maximum detail and frame. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Description: Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987)Jon Gould with Skis, 1976-1986 Four stitched Gelatin silver printsEstate of Andy Warhol and AW copyright credit stamp on the verso69.9 x 54.3 cm (27.5 x 21.4 in); each: 27.6 x 33.9 cm (10.9 x 13.3 in)Christie’s online, 5 March, 2013 Condition Report: This work is generally in good condition with some minor chipping to edge of lower right margin. In the later part of his working life, Andy Warhol produced several hundred works composed of groups of identical photographs stitched together with thread. The subject matter varies considerably from portraits of friends, lovers and celebrities to still lifes. Apparently the idea originated from his former studio assistant, Christopher Makos who had been sewing together his own photographs since 1976. In 1982 Warhol purchased a Bernina sewing machine and Michele Loud (a friend of Makos) was recruited to stitch his photographs together and is responsible for sewing most of them. In 1987 the exhibition, ‘Andy Warhol Photographs’, at Robert Miller Gallery, New York showcased these works for the first time – the show was critically acclaimed and 98 stitched works were sold. Jon Gould, the subject of the work in the current lot was Andy Warhol’s boyfriend between 1980-1985 and was the Vice President of Paramount Pictures. The eminent American writer and former editor of Interview Magazine, Bob Colacello said of him, "... Jon seemed to have two personalities, two styles, two lives: straight and gay, preppy and flamboyant, on his own in Los Angeles and with Andy in New York. He was... awkward when he walked into a room, agile on the ski slopes and the dance floor….” Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Description: Bill Brandt (1904 - 1983)Nude, London, 1952 Gelatin silver print, printed 1969Signed in ink in the margin34.3 x 29.9 cm (13.5 x 11.75 in) Frame: 58 x 51 cm ( 22.75 x 20 in)Alan Klotz Gallery, New York Condition Report: This is an immaculate printing of this image with very clean whites. Excellent condition. German-born Bill Brandt indisputably brought the British to a new understanding of their culture, heritage, and point of view. He started his career in Paris as a studio assistant for Man Ray, but he left his early exposure to surrealism unexplored until after establishing himself in the 1930s as England’s great photojournalist. A turning point came in Brandt’s work in 1944, when, directly following the Normandy invasion, he purchased a wideangle lens camera used by the police to document crime scenes; with this new equipment, Brandt left behind his keenly observed documentation of English public society and turned inward, to strange and wonderful portrayals of the female nude set in private or nearly claustrophobic interiors. His earliest nudes, taken indoors, presenting the models as beautiful aliens, strangely situated on chairs or suggestively positioned in front of recently inhabited beds, with white flesh ethereally lit by large windows or doors left ajar. Over time Brandt moved his camera almost unbearably closer, abstracting the body until it flooded the lens, conjuring fleshy fields with the enormity of an English landscape. Eventually Brandt took a Superwide Hasselblad camera out of doors, travelling to the edge of the sea. There, amongst the rocks and pebbles, the metamorphosis of Brandt’s nudes was complete. Horst P. Horst, Still life, Oyster Bay, Long Island, 1948/50

Description: Horst P. Horst Condition Report: This print is in very good condition. Horst had a career which lasted 60 years and is seen as a master of light, composition and creating beautiful and sublime illusions which transcend time. He was a hugely international figure, working ferociously in Europe and later becoming an American Citizen in the early 1940s. In 1947 he acquired five acres of land in Oyster Bay Cove which he described as ‘Everything I have ever dreamed of’, marking the beginning of an enduring love affair and the creation of a wondrous haven where he entertained everyone from Noël Coward to Diana Vreeland. The print in the present lot is a rare example of an existing colour work by Horst. Containing his trademark composite style of Surrealism and Classicism he presents a beautifully crafted window into his domestic life lit from the side with a cascade of natural light. Vintage colour prints by Horst are more-or-less non-existent due to the fact that many colour images produced at the time were shot on transparency, these were reproduced directly onto the magazine page without the need for a paper print. Later on Horst re-visited his early colour images and experimented once again by printing them as either Dye-transfer prints or Chromogenic prints. However, he made very few of each process and didn’t seem particularly enamored with colour after a lifetime of perfecting the Gelatin silver and Platinum print. It is thought that the print in this lot is one of no more than four printings in existence. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
