A rare Royal Worcester 'Canton' Plate, 1860s/70s,

Lot 10: A rare Royal Worcester 'Canton' Plate, 1860s/70s,

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A rare Royal Worcester 'Canton' Plate, 1860s/70s, finely enamelled and gilt by Po Hing in Canton style with a group of figures and piebald horse within a border of blue bats, butterflies and precious objects, impressed mark, 23.4cm See Henry Sandon, 'Royal Worcester Porcelain', 1978, p.150, and a plate with similar centre, col. pl. V. There is uncertainty both about the name of the Cantonese painter, his working dates at Worcester and why he was there. This plate adds to the confusion. Although the mark is poorly impressed, enough can be made out to date the blank between 1862-1875, however, the exceptional quality of the painting and the blue bats one would normally associate with Canton porcelain of the 1830s. One imagines that the cost of Po Hing's work could not stand price comparison with the Chinese originals and the experiment discontinued, hence the scarcity of specimens.
