Shipping measurements: 11 x 8 1/2 x 5 1/2. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Limoges is one of the most ancient cities having been founded as Augustoritum by the Romans, around 10 BC, but searching for a more secure site, the modern Puy Saint-Étienne, with the City and Castle, unified in 1792 to form a single city, Limoges. During his famous voyage to China, Marco Polo discovered Chinese Porcelain made from the primary fine white clay, Kaolin, and until ~ 1700, the only known supply was in China. During the early 18th century, Kaolin was found at Saxe, and by 1713 the high temperature firing process had been perfected by the Germans. To compete with German porcelain, in 1738, King Louis XV brought a group of skilled Faience artisans primarily from Chantilly to the Chateau de Vincennes near Paris to form a larger porcelain manufactory. Inspired by Madame de Pompadour who adored the rich warm Faience finish, Louis was prompted to move the operation to larger quarters in the Paris suburb of Sevres ca. 1751, at which time original Faience formulas had evolved into soft paste (low temperature fired) porcelain. In 1771, French porcelain was changed forever, as an ultra fine quality Kaolin was discovered at Saint Yrieix la Perche, near Limoges, and a further revelation occurred with the discovery of Limoges underground deposits providing special minerals that became metallic oxides for new brilliant enamels. In 1771, soft paste manufacturing was converted into the first hard paste porcelain made in the Limoges region. The first true factory established about 1774 became a subsidiary of the royal factory in Sevres in 1784. Following the French Revolution, Royal restrictions were removed, and by the early 1800s, Limoges was producing for European consumption, the finest, purest white porcelain in the world. By the 1840s, almost 50 independent factories were operating in Limoges, prompting some of the West?s finest artists to take residence to practice their art on Limoges porcelain.

Shortly after 1890 Theodore Haviland built one of the largest and best factories in Limoges, and introduced every new method in machinery decorating, and firing. Skilful French china makers were placed in charge of manufacturing, great ceramic artists headed the decorating departments. Inheriting his father?s genius and enterprise, Theodore Haviland rapidly became a leader in the making of fine china. Theodore Haviland left the company to start his own in 1893 and was a very innovative marketer. Many prizes were won at exhibitions by both Haviland companies. ?A set in every home? became Theodore?s goal and full services of china for $29.95 are found in the Sears catalogs of the 1920?s. Several patterns from both firms were used as premiums by the Jewel Tea Company, and it is estimated that there are over 30,000 patterns and variations from the two companies. Charles Haviland?s company went out of business in 1931, and because of the approaching hostilities in Europe, Theodore moved his company to the United States in 1936, operating successfully until 1957. The patterns of both companies were gathered and bought in 1941 by William Haviland who retired in 1972. Although the name ?Haviland? remains today the firm has gone through a number of changes in ownership.

Measures 12 x 12 x .75. Etching 5 1/2 x 5 1/2. *Provenance: Dr. Douglas D. Ashley Estate, Charleston SC All her life, Herta Czoernig roamed through the city of Vienna and the surrounding countryside with her sketch pad, crayon and set of color pencils capturing the picturesque streets, homes and scenery. She is generally considered to have been the last "topographical" artist in Vienna. Born in Klagenfurt, she wanted to become an artist from the time she was a young girl. Women were not accepted as students at the Graphic Academy of Vienna in those days so she attended the Art School for Women and later studied in Weimar, Germany. In Vienna, Professor Ludwig Michalek taught her the difficult medium of etching. The large number of etchings she later created are today sought by lovers of the medium as well as lovers of Vienna. Herta Czoernig's artistry received recognition principally after World War II, through her etchings of the homes of musicians and composers in Vienna. Each of these has a vignette containing a few bars of music relating to the scene. In addition to the growing public interest in her work, she was recognized by the Historical Documentation Center of the Austrian National Library because many of her etchings were the only surviving documents of streets and houses in Vienna destroyed during the war. Today many of her works are in the archives of the National Library. Her greatest honor came shortly before her death. The Albertina Museum in Vienna, home of one of the world's greatest collections of graphics, commissioned Herta Czoernig to make a plate featuring the Albertina itself. She died soon after completing this etching, her life's ambition fulfilled. For Shipping: Weight: 2 Pds Measurements:14x14x2

RARE FRENCH 1866 MODEL ROUND CORDONS BAYONET + SCABBARD

Lot 14: RARE FRENCH 1866 MODEL ROUND CORDONS BAYONET + SCABBARD

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: We are exceptionally pleased to present this spectacular giant French model 1866 rifle bayonet and matching scabbard, measuring 28" long and weighing 3 pounds. Mavens will recognize the basic re-curve design with the routed blood groove blade which was the standard for the style. Although there were several variations of the 1866, including one with an 1842 heavy blade, the basic components are the same. Ours is apparently one of the slightly modified versions, making it Rare. This is a really interesting piece as the Ricasso is longer than most of the 1866's, with the grip Cordons deeper with much rounder profiles, and the Quillion ball is less pronounced than normal. The key-way slot appears shorter than the normal 1866, but this may also be attributed to a more rounded pommel. There is also a virtual identical Belgium 1866 contract bayonet, but our cross guard serial stamp is insufficient to make that specific attribution. The scabbard itself is marked with a script A & 29952. This is a quality French mid 19th century piece of militaria, with its original scabbard, and both are in VG condition.

SCARCE HEREND 1950 PORCELAIN LONG NECK CELADON NET SWAN

Lot 18: SCARCE HEREND 1950 PORCELAIN LONG NECK CELADON NET SWAN

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: We are exceptionally proud to present this first of two early 1950's Herend porcelain, hand painted Celadon green fishnet long neck swans, finished in classic gold accents. The artistry is simply superb, just exactly that which you expect from the skilled artisans at Herend. Our base stamp dates to the early 1950's, and is the first Herend & Hungary dome over shield mark w/ crossed swords and HAND PAINTED beneath, making this a valuable vintage figurine. **Be advised that the first Herend / Hungary dome were used in 1939, but were punctuated with dates below. Our beautiful swan stands 6 x 2 1/2 x 5" tall, weighing 5 oz., and is in wonderful condition. This is a stunning & valuable Herend vintage treasure. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Since 1826, Herend has produced one of the world's most outstanding and distinctive porcelains. The manufactory name is derived from the small village of Herend located not far from Budapest, one of the great capitals of Europe. Though the earliest details of porcelain history in Hungary are incomplete, artifacts from the region confirm the area as among the first earthenware producers in Europe. In 1826, Vince Stingl invested in a facility and began to produce earthenware but had his eye on decorative porcelain as well. Stingl ran out of funds, and subsequently went bankrupt, with his creditor Mór Fischer taking control of the factory in 1839. This momentous change, fostered the blossoming reputation of Herend, as Fischer, realizing tat he could not compete with larger commercial factories, directed Herend into the field of reproducing old, valuable soft & hard paste porcelain patterns, in the tradition of Meissen, Sevres, and Chinese tableware. One such instance involved the King of Sardinia, owner of a very old set, who wanted some missing pieces replaced. Herend was appointed the task of recreation, and after a full year of careful study and experimentation Fischer completed the set. Because he felt these replacements might be received with suspicion, Fischer asked the king if he would be permitted to deliver the set personally to Turin castle. Fischer requested that he be left alone to arrange the collection for the King's inspection. In the room, he took the original Chinese pieces from their glass cabinets, arranged them on the table and put his own product into the cabinets. He then presented to the King and his courtiers the pieces on the table as his own creation. Fischer listened patiently to criticism, that these pieces were not nearly as perfect as the porcelain in the glass cabinets, before revealing the truth. The story spread, confirming Herends artistry and led to Fischer's unveiling of original designs. At the London World Exhibition in 1851, Queen Victoria ordered a very large table service for Windsor Castle. Decorated with a Chinese design of flowers and butterflies, it has since become famous as the Queen Victoria pattern. Many aristocrats followed the Queen's example such as orders were placed on behalf of several other royal courts such as Francis Joseph I of Austria, and., Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico. The name of well-known & valuable patterns were attached to the first Royal / Aristocratic customers (Queen Victoria, Esterházy, Batthyány, Rothschild, Apponyi). The company's first exposure to the American market came in 1853 with their medal winning entry at the New York Exhibition of Industrial Arts, and in 1866, Fischer was elevated to the nobility and titled Moritz Fischer von Farkashazy in recognition of his role as a pioneer of Hungarian industry. From 1872 forward, Mór Fischer Farkasházy, Purveyor to the Royal Court, was entitled to use the shapes and patterns of the idle Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna, which began the first golden age of Herend. In 1874, Mór Fischer gave the management of the manufactory to his sons, and at this juncture, the level of production started to decline, due to in major part the lack of new artistic innovation. Through the latter 1880s & 1890s, the factory had several owners, and almost achieved bankruptcy as a result a complete lack of artistic impression. The Herend factory was saved from oblivion at the end of the century, when the grandson of the founder, Jeno Farkasházy, became the sole owner. Jeno Farkasházy was a trained ceramist who gained experience in foreign factories, and intended to follow the founder's concepts of Ornate, Innovative & Colorful porcelain. Having excellent taste, Jeno reintroduced classic patterns, and introduced novelties in exhibitions at Paris in 1900, and St. Petersburg, Russia in 1901. Between the two world wars, limited reproduction of traditional products, from the age of Mór Fischer, was continued, and Hungarian style figures were also manufactured for the first time, employing the finest Hungarian sculptors available. After Jeno?s passing in 1926, the factory continued under the leadership of Counts Andras and Moric Eszterhazy until it was nationalized in 1943, with full control and ownership by the Communist State achieved in 1948. The state administration of the factory continued until 1993, when it was privatized and 75% of the Porcelain Manufactory was transferred to the management and workers.

Brian Rutenberg attended College of Charleston where Douglas Ashley was a very popular and much loved professor for 31 years. *Provenance: Dr. Douglas D. Ashley Estate, Charleston SC Brian Rutenberg's abstract paintings reinvigorate and revitalize the medium. Raised in South Carolin,he graduated with honors from the College of Charleston in 1987 and moved to New York, where he entered the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts, New York. Rutenberg has lived and worked in New York for the past 25 years. His work elicits a profoundly visceral experience as he reinvests abstraction with a sense of spirituality. Influenced by the music of Glenn Gould and Celtic culture, as well as the painters Joan Mitchell and Hans Hoffman, Rutenberg draws on the landscape that he remembers from childhood, growing up between Pawley's Island and Charleston, where the rivers and lakes join the ocean. The landscape, complex in its layers, has guided Rutenberg's approach to composition and color. Brian Rutenberg was born September 18, 1965 in Myrtle Beach, SC. He studied with painters Gregory Amenoff and Darby Bannard at the School of Visual Arts, NYC in 1987 and who both became important inspirations. In 1989 Francis Marion University Art Gallery in Florence, South Carolina presented the artist's first solo exhibition. Rutenberg was awarded the Basil H. Alkazzi Award [USA] in 1991, which enabled him to study in Rome, Bologna and Venice, Italy where he studied the works of Annibale Carracci, Bernini and Tiepolo. Inspired by 17th and 18th Century Italian ceiling paintings and the Villa d?Este near Rome, Rutenberg began his River Paintings series. In 1992 Rutenberg was awarded a year-long Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Grant. One year later, the artist had his first New York solo exhibition, River Paintings, at During the same year the Greenville County Museum of Art in Greenville, South Carolina organized Rutenbergs first museum exhibition. In 1994, Rutenberg started to visit Toronto and Ottawa, Canada to closely study Glenn Gould?s life and career. He traveled to Canada annually for this purpose until 2002. Inspired by Gould and his music, Rutenberg enrolled in music history classes at New York?s Juilliard School. During one of his trips to Canada Rutenberg discovered and became intrigued with the work of Canada?s Group of Seven painters. In 1997 Rutenberg received a Fulbright Fellowship which afforded him the opportunity to spend a year in Ireland. While there, Rutenberg was honored with studio space at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. He lectured at universities and art schools throughout the country. During his travels around Ireland, the artist?s work became shaped by Celtic Culture, specifically the La Tene Period, 600-400 BC. Rutenberg had his first solo exhibition with the Forum Gallery in Los Angeles in 2000. Forum Gallery, New York became Rutenbergs primary representative. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Original Elizabeth O'Neil Verner (American 1883-1979)- Old Gateway, Charleston - etching, signed and titled in pencil, by the Artist. Professionally famed and matted *Provenance: Dr. Douglas D. Ashley Estate, Charleston SC. In frame Measures 8 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 1 . Approx 1 pd. Elizabeth Quale O'Neill (Verner), 1883 - 1979, was born in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of a prosperous rice factor and lived a life of privilege until the rice growing industry moved to Louisiana and Texas in the mid 1890's. In remembering her father, she wrote, "He selected the highest to accent in life. Because he enjoyed gracious living, easy hospitality, fine clothes, good food, the best in literature and most of all, peace, he had these things, and we, his children, had them too." In 1900 her parents, recognizing her talent, sent her to Philadelphia to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art under Thomas Anchutes the disciple of Thomas Eakins, founder of what was known as The American School of Painting from which Verner learned her aesthetic discipline. She returned to Charleston in 1903 at the time of her father's death, to discover her family in crisis as her father had done all his business on a handshake and kept no notes. No one could continue his business. The family began to live by selling their investments which maintained her mother and younger siblings until the 1920's when her mother died. She married E. Pettigrew Verner, producing two children, Elizabeth Pettigrew (1908) and David Battle (1911), while continuing her art mostly in the form of oil paintings. In the mid 1920's her husband died, and she threw herself into becoming a professional artist. In a very short time she succeeded in attracting wide spread attention. It was in the medium of etching that she excelled and between 1925 and 1933 she produced a phenomenal body of work. She did continue to produce drypoints for some years, but by 1937 she had ceased her intalio work and picked up pastels which she added to a continuing love of drawing. To this she added letters to her accomplishments publishing four books and lecturing widely. She drew her last pastel,"Day Clean at Middleton Place" in 1963, 60 years after leaving the Pennsylvania Academy. For Shipping: Weight : 1 pd Measurements:10x10x2

RARE 1845 MASONS PATENT IRONSTONE COBALT POLYCHROME PLT

Lot 29: RARE 1845 MASONS PATENT IRONSTONE COBALT POLYCHROME PLT

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: We are exceptionally proud to present this Rare early Charles James Mason Flow Polychrome Cobalt & Iron Oxide Red (5) color Patent Ironstone Japonisme plate with a beautiful scalloped rim. This incredible collectible represents one of the first generation of Flow Blue Cobalt salts pieces, and all of the English references agree that this is the proper early angular crown over the 45 degree filled base edge Mason's banner. As true devotes will note, this crown and banner were first seen ca. 1820 on Ironstone potted by C.M & C.J. Mason, BUT, it was not until 1845 that the Mason's block script was added to the top of the crown by Charles James Mason. For the true eclectic maven, please note that our stamp is the earliest of the 1845+ signatures, as the Mason's is highly compressed, rather than being concentrically & wider spaced as seen in the ca. 1847+ stamps! Our fantastic Japanese Pagoda scenic features a 5 color pattern - the Royals Royce of the time. We have mentioned the Cobalt & Iron Oxide red, but the plate includes a subtle tan / yellow, a brushed pink ring, and green accents. The overall theme is a classic medallion style rim, all of these attributes being Rare & desirable for an almost 170 year old earthenware treasure. Known for its Chinoiserie style, this pseudo Imari fashion represented a bold departure from the other standard era table wares. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The fabled Mason family of potters began its history as Miles mason of the Islington Pottery in Liverpool (1796-1800), as well as having stewardship over the Victoria Pottery (ca. 1800-1806), the Minerva Works (1806-1813) and the soon to be ancestral home of the family at the Lane Delph / Fenton, Staffordshire Works from 1813 (where Mason?s ironstone China was registered in 1813), and continuing until 1829. From 1811, the Lane Delph Pottery was G.M & C.J. Mason, which represented a cooperative arrangement, allowing William Mason to use Lane Delph, even after the official name change to G.M. & C.J. Mason, which operated both the Fenton Stone Works on High Street, as well as Lane Delph until 1829. In 1829, both factories became Charles James Mason & Co., remaining until 1845, when it traded as simply Charles James Mason until 1848. At that juncture, Charles left only to work at Daisy Bank, Longton from 1851 until 1854, and this was concurrent to the Francis Morley / Morley & Ashworth partnerships beginning early in 1849, culminating in the absorption of Masons by G.L. Ashworth & Bros. in 1862. The Masons Patent Ironstone China moniker continued to be used by Ashworth at least until 1914. The famous crown mark and the "Patent Ironstone China" have been used in one way or another from 1813 to this day. Mason's wares were an instant success and have remained highly desirable with collectors for almost 200 years. The plate is in very good condition with minor age discoloration and wear. Six years after graduating from college, while working in the restaurant business, Williams started painting again and quickly realized that this would be his life's path. Williams is a self-taught artist who learned his craft from studying art in books and museums. His work is inspired by the spiritual and romantic beauty of the lowcountry that he fell in love with as a child. Today Mickey lives with his wife and three children in Mt. Pleasant. His current work focuses on not only the Ace Basin but surrounding barrier islands and wetlands as well. The Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers empty into a vast area of wetlands resulting in one of the world's most pristine estuaries. Mickey is currently focusing on the coast and it's erosion and ever changing form. His work is also included in permanent collections, including the Medical University of South Carolina, Roper Hospital, the University of South Carolina at Sumter, Cox Enterprises, Atlanta Georgia and The Department of Commerce Columbia SC in the Commerce Secretary's office and the office of the former United States Ambassador to Tanzania.
