Fred Holabird has only seen 2 of these is 40 years of dealing in mining ephemera! The Ontario mine was a major silver mine in the Uintah Mining District (near Park City, Utah). Hearst was talked into investing in it after his partnership and success with Marcus Daly in the Ophir Mine in Virginia City, Nevada. Before partnering with Hearst, Haggin was a very successful lawyer, California rancher, and horse breeder. Hearst, Haggin, Tevis & Company was one of the largest mining firms in the United States at the time with operations at the Anaconda Copper Mine in Montana, the Ontario silver mine in Park City, Utah, and the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, as well as Hearst's investments on the Comstock Lode. Description: Location: Plymouth, Windsor County, Vermont. Black leather binding with gilt lettering. 47 pages with index. Printed by Coburn Bros. & Snow, Boston, 1884. Multiple single-page lithos. and maps: litho. landscape view of whole property (pg 1), plan of the plant (pg 3), cross-section and boundary lines (pg 7), cross-section (pg 16), longitudinal section (pg 19), and map of Vermont (pg 26). Also has an index which is not common for a mining report. Location discovered in 1880, purchased by company in 1882. 400 acre gold mine property with quartz mill. 800 ft. of development (lineal measure). Lode is auriferous crystalline matrix imbedded between continuous permanent walls. Ore body is encased, interstratified and tarnished with iron oxide. Describes the operation in detail, as well as an overview of the gold formation in Plymouth. Ends with favorable selections from print journals. Annual Report of the James River & Kanawha Co. (Canal Transportation) (R. Pumpelly's Copy)

Description: 64 pages with table of contents. Personal copy of famous geologist Raphael Pumpelly (signed on front cover). The James River and Kanawha Co. was a canal transportation company that transported coal and iron. Mentions extending canal to Clifton Forge. The James River & Kanawha Canal Company was formed the following year in 1876 with the intention of building a railway between Buchanan and Clifton Forge and taking advantage of the iron and coal land it would cross through. The company sold the project in 1878. Has appendix in the back with analysis of West Virginia coals. Printed by Clemmitt & Jones, Richmond, 1875. Raphael Pumpelly (1837-1923) was involved in mining in Arizona in 1860, followed by work in Japan, northern China and the Gobi Desert. While teaching at Harvard, he formulated the idea of secular rock disintegration. In the 1870s, he surveyed Michigan copper country, followed by survey work in Missouri and for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
