Lot 2: *Franz Ittenbach

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: (German, 1813-79) THE HOLY FAMILY signed and dated F. Ittenbach 1868 (center right) oil on panel 19 1/4 by 13in. 48.9 by 33cm. Franz Ittenbach entered the atelier of Guillaume Schadow at the Dusseldorf Academy in 1832. He was greatly influenced by the principles of the Nazarenes, a group of artists who drew their inspiration primarily from the Bible. These artists revived and espoused a crisp linear style, as well as adapted the color palette found in Renaissance art of the 15th and 16th centuries, which fascinated them and served as their primary artistic heritage. They believed that Renaissance society was more spiritually integrated than their own. Much of Ittenbach's oeuvre deals with religous subject matter, and he was widely regarded as an accomplished painter of this genre, particularly revered for the elegant clarity of his works. His extraordinary technical skill engendered numerous commissions to decorate churches throughout Germany.

Lot 4: *Petrus van Schendel

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: (Dutch, 1806-70) THE NIGHT MARKET signed with the artist's initials and dated PVS 1836 (lower right) oil on panel 21 5/8 by 28 1/8 in. 54.9 by 71.4cm. Petrus van Schendel studied at the Academy of Antwerp under the tutaledge of Jan van Bree. Blending the romantic with the neo-classical, he specialized in noctural Dutch market scenes where he explored the subtle and theatrical effects of candle and lamplight on the human face and body. Van Schendel was clearly influenced by the seventeeth-century northern masters of light, collectively known as the Utrecht Caravaggisti. This group, comprised of Gerrit van Honthorst (1592-1656), Hendrick ter Brugghen (1588-1629) and Dirck van Baburen (1594/5-1624), travelled to Rome at the beginning of the 17th century and became entranced with the work of Caravaggio (1573-1610). The Utrecht Caravaggisti transformed Caravaggio's revolutionary patterns of natural light and shadow into economical and powerful compositions, heightened by their personal styles to create dramactic areas of contrasting light and dark. Utrecht Caravaggism had an important impact on Dutch painting, and was more than just a local phenomenon. It laid the groundwork for subsequent artistic developments throughout Northern Europe, and culminated two centuries later in the intricate studies of nocturnal light in the paintings of Petrus van Schendel.
