Description: Circa 1914 - 1915, with underglaze blue crossed swords mark, incised model number ''D.287'' and impressed ''49'', modeled by Paul Scheurich on characters in the Russian ballet ''Le Carnival'', depicting the commedia dell'arte figure standing on point, Columbine wearing a crinoline, her face turned towards Harlequin's, he masked and with one arm around her waist and a baton under the other, on a patterned oval base, 10.75'' H x 8.5'' W x 4.75'' D, est: $3000/5000. Note: Paul Scheurich, an American-born artist who emigrated to Berlin in 1900, began working for Meissen in 1913, eventually sculpting eighty-seven figures for the company over twenty years. He modeled five figures based on characters in the ballet ''Le Carnival'', which was created in 1910 for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, with choreography by Mikhail Fokine to music by Robert Schumann. The first performance in Berlin, featuring sets and costumes by Bakst, was in May 1910, followed by others in 1912 and 1914. ''Le Carnival'' became the most popular Ballets Russes production in Berlin, occasioning the models by Meissen.

Condition Report: Overall good condition. An expertly executed restoration to Herlequin's right shoe bow, and a few further minor expert restorations to Columbine's crinoline flounces (the restorations not visible to the naked eye).

Condition Report: Visual: Stable craquelure throughout. Tacking edges removed when mounted and black tape applied to the edges. An area of canvas lifting (with no associated loss) in the lower left quadrant near the lower edge. Blacklight: Extensive touch-up along the entire upper edge and in the upper left and right quadrants. A few other scattered spots of touch-up no larger than a quarter throughout the sky. Small scattered areas and spots of touch-up in the left center to the center, the largest area is located in the center measuring approximately 1'' x 1.5''. Two areas, one approximate 4'' x 7'' and the other approximately 2'' x 5'', of tiny dots of touch-up possibly to stabilize and address flaking. Crack fill and scattered touch-up throughout the center and lower left and right. The white pigment on the water areas fluoresces unevenly under blacklight but this is presumed to be in the hand of the artist. Areas of uneven varnish, particularly evident on the trees in the upper right and left center.
