An ancient Egyptian alabaster canopic jar and cover, 16th-4th century BC, 15.25in., repairs to cover

Lot 45: An ancient Egyptian alabaster canopic jar and cover, 16th-4th century BC, 15.25in., repairs to cover

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: An ancient Egyptian alabaster canopic jar and cover, 16th-4th century BC, the jar with a flat base, tapering sides and rounded shoulders, the cover human headed, with an oval face, 15.25in., repairs to cover

Condition Report: The jar and cover are ancient Egyptian but possibly have been matched, the cover itself has some patina to the surface and natural fissures and scenes in the stone, the section below the chin in the collar bone area has been broken and replacement pieces of later alabaster have been glued in position which can easily be seen in the photograph, the head has a limestone plug placed into it with some plaster type filler around it which looks as though it has some serious age to it, the jar itself has good areas of wear to the top and some minor chipping and abrasion on the inside edge, the jar itself has been used for candles at some stage so there is a little bit of sootyness to the interior and some wax residue in the bottom, the base of the jar is roughly finished and some small chips around the edge except for one larger chip measuring 18mm across and 14mm high to the edge of the foot, the stone of the jar has a pleasing ripple within the banding and on one side has some striking white inclusions, otherwise good condition. The white on the surface is a white inclusion in the stone itself. Provenance: The canopic jar and cover has come from a retired former London specialist glass and lighting dealer who's daughter says has owned the items his whole life probably having inherited it from his own father prior to the WWII.
