Ahrendts, Leopold: Palais Itzig, Berlin

Lot 4003: Ahrendts, Leopold: Palais Itzig, Berlin

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Palais Itzig, Berlin. Circa 1856. Salt print with rounded corners. 16 x 21,3 cm. Mounted to board (slightly soiled, some foxing). Leopold Ahrendts worked first as a painter and lithographer in Dessau before moving to Berlin circa 1850, where he presented lithographs at the Academy of the Arts exhibition that same year. In 1856 he began working in the studio of the court photographer Philipp Graff. He exhibited his first photographs under the name of the Graff studio and shortly thereafter he began signing his photos with his own name. Ahrendts is undoubtedly one of the most important early German photographers who combined high technical standards and artful composition in his photographs. In 1762 the banker Daniel Itzig purchased the palace pictured here, which was originally built for General Montargues in 1718, and had it remodelled into a stately residence palace. The palace was sold in 1856 and torn down in 1858. The plans for this building have been lost and Ahrendts was the only photographer to document the residence with his camera, making this photograph, in such an excellent state, all the more rare and valuable. - One minimal foxing spot near upper edge and a few light surface scratches only visible in raking light, otherwise a beautiful rich print with an exceptionally strong violet-brown tone, strong contrasts and in excellent condition. Lit.: Galerie Berinson (ed.). Leopold Ahrendts (1825 - 1870) and the Early Days of Photography in Berlin. With a text by Sigrid Schulze. Berlin 2011, ill. p. 43.

Although this print is not signed and the image is unpublished, the style and quality suggest Leopold Ahrendts as the author. - Some light crease/scuff marks, writing on verso shows slightly through in sky area, otherwise a strong print in very good condition. The book was published by De Gayffier in 1868 and was one of the first such books illustrated with photographs rather than lithographs or engravings and in which true forest foilage was depicted. In 1867 De Gayffier was appointed by the Minister of Agriculture to its "special photographic operations". - Small paper loss in upper right corner, otherwise in very good condition.
