Directions to 93 Pleasant Street Route 95 North to Exit 7 (Downtown Portsmouth). Turn right onto Market Street continuing straight through the blinking light and into downtown. At Market Square bear right onto Congress Street, then left at the first traffic light (Fleet Street). Continue on Fleet Street for three blocks until you see the fire station. Take a left onto Court Street and at the stop sign you will see Treadwell House diagonally across the street. Description: The boldly figured San Domingan mahogany top with chamfered edge above the frame incorporated with corner brackets, joining delicate cylindrical turned tapered legs ending in pad feet with discs. Height, width depthThe top is joined with cleats through the frame on the underside. This was described as a favorite technique of John Goddard's in "American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection," vol. VIII, P2324. Description: The oblong thumb-molded lid opening to an elaborate interior with central shell-carved and blocked prospect door, opening to a compartment with three blocked drawers, flanked on either side by three valanced pigeon hole drawers, upright scrolled document dividers and a blocked drawer, continuing to three blocked drawers, the upper with carved shell. The case with four long graduated thumb-molded drawers on a molded base and ogee bracket feet. Appears to retain the original brasses. The use of mahogany for the interior secondary wood and the brass side handles on the case are marks of a superior cabinetmaker. Accompanying the chair is a black and white photograph of the chair frame prior to being upholstered. Provenance: Varnam House, the Estate of Miss Louise Brayton Bowen, East Greenwich, Rhode Island, 1926; by descent in the Isham family.
