Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 37 1/2 x 29 in./95.2 x 73.6 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati Barnum & Bailey had been featuring high-jumping female jockeys since 1890, headlined for 30 years by Minnie Johson on her white horse, Pegasus. Her signature was using neither crop nor whip when riding. As the only one of the six female jockeys, all riding sidesaddle, in this contained steeplechase lacking such instruments, it is more than likely that the woman in yellow and blue stripes is Miss Johnson, the most seasoned of the circus’s riders. This is the French-text version. Text in French.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 38 1/2 x 29 3/4 in./98 x 75.5 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati In one of the most magnificent of all Strobridge-created posters for the circus, the artist impresses us with the sheer size and logistical complexity of the enterprise, which is virtually a traveling tent city. Although it was first used in the US in 1899, this German-text version was prepared for their 1902 European tour. Even abroad, Barnum & Bailey ordered 70 railroad cars to their specifications, and had them built in England to fit European track gauges.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 27 3/4 x 74 3/4 in./70.4 x 189.6 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati Rather than rely on the razzle-dazzle of the various acts or the wild nature of the menagerie, this two-sheet poster simply gives us images of four of the world’s largest buildings in which Barnum & Bailey perform regularly: Vienna’s Grande Rotunde, the Chicago Coliseaum, the Olympia in London, and Madison Square Garden. This is a subtle and smart bit of advertising, in that it immediately elevates whatever hometown dump the circus may be playing at tomorrow to the level of these architectural marvels. French text.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 30 1/8 x 39 5/8 in./76.5 x 100.6 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati Promising 1,250 characters in the spectacle, this poster nearly manages to show all of them in a crowded design which includes eight scenes, two emblems, and a rare example of a cameo portrait which includes both founders. Three of the sections are devoted to the Cleopatra pageant, staged with great pomp. The top frieze is highly unusual, not seen in other Barnum & Bailey posters -- a border of various circus elements dominated by an elephant’s trunk.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 38 5/8 x 27 7/8 in./98.2 x 73.3 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati “One of the most recognizable circus icons, the image of the clown playfully captures the viewer’s attention. In the American circus, the clown’s initial role was to provide comic relief to the serious and intense acts, in which he participated by verbally poking fun at the equestrian and the straight man -- the master of the ring -- and filling time while the performer caught his breath before the next stunt. Later, clowns achieved greater prominence as solo artists or by filling the interlude between acts” (Strobridge, p. 96). This image of the bowing clown was used in a variety of formats to promote all the major circuses.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 40 x 30 in./101.5 x 76.2 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati Starting in the late 1890s, larger-than-life stage shows, called spectacles, were a big draw for the major circuses that could afford to do them. Hundreds of performers would fill a stage in the main tent, accompanied by a host of exotic animals, and act out famous stories in elaborate detail. Here, the epic tale of the Thousand and One Nights is being offered under the alluring title of “Persia.”

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 38 3/8 x 28 1/2 in./97.5 x 72.2 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati The last of the truly giant Barnum & Bailey spectacles were produced during 1917-18 season. After this, the special stages at one side of the Big Top were eliminated and the spectacles which followed, though often very elaborate, were limited to marches around the hippodrome track. In this poster for “Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp,” we see the moment when the hero first meets his princess, an oriental court of supreme opulence gathered around them.

They traveled with the show for four seasons before returning to Europe to tour their own circus. Featured in the center ring, the Könyöts were skilled dressage and bareback riders. Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 30 x 39 1/4 in./76.2 x 99.7 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati “The ‘Leap for Life’ was performed by the German acrobat Ernest Gadbin. After being hoisted to his small platform high in the Big Top, [he] would raise his hands above his head and dive head-first, aiming for a 40-foot-long, 2 1/2-foot-wide wooden skid on which he slid, its upward curve throwing him into the air, through which he flew some distance before finally landing in a net” (Strobridge, p. 250). This type of act is often cited as being one of the most thrilling and nerve-wracking ever performed in a circus, especially as Gadbin was the only man to perform this stunt without any sort of armor or safety harness.
