A scagliola top table Carpi (?), first half of 19th century

Lot 40: A scagliola top table Carpi (?), first half of 19th century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A small walnut veneer table raised on a single fluted column, Apart from acanthus leaves that adorn the column, the structure is without decoration, a stylistic choice probably due to the desire to bring out the romantic taste of the scagliola inset in the top. A landscape scene with ruins decorates the centre of a vine spray frame. It may be depicting the Ponte Lucano, an archaeological site in the plain of Tivoli, where Lucia Metella is buried, that in all probability, is the circular building shown in the scagliola. There is a label present under the top bearing the name of Pietro della Valle and siblings. Pietro della Valle was a seventeenth century Italian writer, who used to travel followed by a painter who could preserve the memory of monuments and places he visited. It is therefore probable that the scagliola faithfully depicts one of these paintings. h 69 cm
